RESEARCH
QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH
-- is "explaining phenomenon by collecting
numerical data that are analyzed using
mathematically based methods [ in particular
statistics]"
(Aliaga and Gunderson, 2000)
Quantitative research
is explaining phenomenon ...

phenomenon is a
peculiar incident that
can happen
anywhere, with any
discipline or any
organization
EXAMPLES OF A PHENOMENA

decrease in sales

increase in dropout rate in school

shift in percentage of COVID patients

rise in the rate of teenage pregnancy

Quantitative research
deals with the numerical data
that are analyzed using
statistics

attempts to measure
relevant factors and
variables by
attaching numeric
values that express
quantity.
CHARACTERISTICS
It is reliable and objective

It uses statistics to generalize finding

It tests theories or hypotheses

It deals with the details of the subject

It reduces a complex problem to a limited

number of variables
ADVANTAGES
It allows researcher to measure and
analyze data to arrive at an objective
answer to the problem stated.

The result is reliable since the study uses a

big sample of the population
DISADVANTAGES

Having a large study sample requires

researchers to spend more resources

It provides less elaborate accounts of

human perceptions
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
- is defined as the “naturalistic method of research
which deals with the concern of human difficulty by
discovering it straightly.” (Beck, 2004)

It is concerned with the experiences, understanding

and words of the individual.
QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
PURPOSE

and generate hypothesis or
theory

ADVANTAGES

The data is based on human experiences

and observations.

Subject materials can be evaluated with

greater detail.

Data complexities can be incorporated into

generated conclusions.
DISADVANTAGES

The quality of the data gathered in

qualitative research is highly subjective.

Mining data gathered by qualitative

research can be time consuming.

Researcher influence can have a negative

effect on the collected data.
