A lion slowly walks through the tall. African grass 1. She keeps her body _law to the grown2.

She is hunting. Slowly, ever so slowly she gets closer to her prey 3. She can almost taste the
fresh meat4. Slowly, slowly…and now she POUNCES. Nature has its way once again5 as the
lion eats her meal.
The laws of nature may seem very vicious6. But lions need to eat other animals to survive 7.
Those animals, in turn, eat other animals for their own survival 8. All animals on earth are here for
a very exact reason. They all play their part in keeping nature in balance10 Each group of animal
helps to keep the population11 of another group down.
Many people say that the lion is the king of animals12. The power, strength, and beauty of the
lion appeal to many people13. Some people travel across the world, to Africa, to see a lion in its
natural home14. Nature shows on television show people the way of the lion. They show the
lion as a hunter, as a meat eater 15. So, when people go to see a lion they expect to see it acting in
that way16. People hope to see a lion hunting an unexpected animal17. They want to see the
laws of nature played out 18 in front of them.
But, in the Samburu National Reserve in Nairobi, Kenya 19 there was one female lion that surprised
the people visiting. This lion was acting a little strange 20. In fact, it was as if the laws of nature
21 did not even affect her. This full-grown lion 22 became the mother of five young antelopes.
Instead of attacking and eating23 the young antelope, she brought them into her care.
People visiting Samburu observed the female lion slowly moving in on a family of antelope several
different times 24. Each time there would be a newborn baby antelope. She would separate the
new born away from the frightened parents 26. She would carry the young antelope A safe
distance 27 away. There she would lie down 28 next to the baby. She protected the baby
antelope as if it was one of her own young 29. She would chase away both antelopes and
Antelope eaters 30--including other lions.
The lion took five young antelope into her care. Another lion attacked and ate 31 the first antelope.
The rest slowly began to starve to death 32 from lack of milk from their mothers. The health 33 of
the female lion suffered too. She would not hunt for herself. She seemed too concerned about 34
the safety of the antelope. She did not want to go too far away from it.
Workers in the Samburu National Reserve tried to reunite35 one of the baby antelopes with its
mother. The workers observed the baby walking away from the lion one morning. They used
that opportunity36 to try to get between the lion and the antelope. They hoped to bring the
antelope they hoped to bring 37. But, the workers ’ attempt failed. The lion quickly moved
around the workers. And she took control of the baby antelope once again38.
The strange behaviour of the lion has brought many more visitors into samburu National Reserve39.
Many people want to see this fierce meateating predator. They want to see its Strange
