AP Stats – Ch 14 Guided Notes (approach) (Starts on page 362)

PART 1: Content & Terminology (pg 362):

General Addition Rule (write the rule) -

How is this rule different than rule #4 from chapter 13?

Using a _________ Diagram (make a picture) is another tool to use (instead of formula)

Review the step-by-step example on pages 365-366….the example uses the formula to solve for the answers,
but truly could you get the answers using the Venn diagram? Try it and see.

Conditional Probability (pg 367):

Write what it is -

Write the formula -

Look at the Notation Alert in the left-hand margin (how to ‘say’ it)

(this is where I’m going to jump ahead to page 374)

General Multiplication Rule (write the rule) -

How is this rule different than rule #5 from chapter 13?

Did you notice that with a ‘ little algebra’ the conditional formula can be derived?

Okay...time to take a break from concepts/terms and see how to use them with some BASIC problems
(again, you may already remember how to do all of these problems); if you do NOT need the formulas, that
is okay.

Textbook Page 383: 2, 3, 12, 14, 15, 21; Come and check answers with me and get a completion grade :)

PART 2: Back to the concepts…

Page 368 INDEPENDENCE (remember I mentioned you would be able to calculate independence next
chapter)

What does independence mean in regards to events?

Testing for Independence (depending on what is given):

1. If independent, P( B∨ A)=❑❑❑❑❑❑
2. If independent, P( A∨B)=¿
3. If independent, P ¿∩ B ¿=¿ (The product of what???; think about ch 13 rule)
You may want to read the purple box in the left margin (pg 369) AND read through the content on this
same page (as it says, this stuff is important!)

Independent ≠ Disjoint (pg 370) - READ THIS SECTION (pages 370-371). Write down any ideas that you
feel you cannot remember (without writing them down).

TOOLS TO HELP WITH PROBABILITY CALCULATIONS (if you need….in fact, some of you will use over the
formulas)

TABLES/VENN DIAGRAMS (pg 371) - Very helpful for the addition rule (OR)

TABLES/TREE DIAGRAMS (pg 376) - Very helpful for the multiplication and conditional rule(s) (AND;
GIVEN)

Drawing without replacement (pg 374) - ALL of you have calculated probability in this manner. Skim
through this section for a refresher

Reversing the Conditioning (pg 378) - Just know what it’s talking about

(Bayesian Reasoning….you can choose to skip or read to enhance)

WCGW & Terms Pages - Write down what you think you need

Now, let’s check your understanding of the concepts from the entire chapter. Work the following questions and input
your answers into the Schoology assessment (3 attempts; highest score recorded); if you are struggling with getting the
correct answers….say after your 2nd attempt, let me know so we can work on ‘things’ :)

Textbook Page 384: 16, 18 (if you need, draw a tree diagram and organize info into a chart...like in #16) , 22, 28, 34, 40
(chart), 43 (tree & chart), 45, and 54 (tree & chart); CHECK MY KEY ON SCHOOLOGY NEXT

AT THIS POINT, WHAT TO DO? If you are good to go with chapter 14 content, you already are through 2 of the 4
chapters regarding probability. Do a little more practice to prepare for the quest.
