B. ENGAGE (10 GAME: UNLOCK ME!

minutes)
Group Activity.
Divide the class into five groups, each group will be
given a 4-digit number. The task is to create a four-
digit password to unlock the mystery box.

CLUES:
 My 2nd digit is twice the difference of a number
and 1 is 4, I am that number.
 My last digit has the smallest value in the
counting numbers.
 My 3rd digit is twice my last digit.
 If you add the 2nd and 3rd digit I am your first
digit.
WHAT IS MY CODE? Answer:
The code is,
4311

Afterwards, ask students the following guide

questions; -24 4-digit
1. How many possible passwords you created? passwords
2. How did you come up with all those -By arranging

3. From the activity that we had, what do you -Permutation

objects.
C. EXPLORE (5 In the same group, identify the following situations
mins) according to the type of permutation; Linear
Permutation, Permutation without Repetition,
Permutation with Repetition or Replacement,
Distinguishable Permutation, and Circular
Permutation.
Situations:
1. In how many ways can 10 swimmers on a 1.Circular

2. If the inflation rate in the Philippines can be 2.Permutation

repetition is allowed?
3. 33% of Canadian people reported having read 3.Permutation

4. Find the number of ways we can arrange the
letter of the word PHILIPPINES. 4.Distinguishabl
5. In how many ways can Aling Rosa arrange 6 e Permutation

Permutation

D. EXPLAIN (15 Permutation is an arrangement of objects in a

mins) definite order. Also, it is a mathematical technique
that determines the possible arrangement in a set
when the order of arrangements matters.
For example:
 Class Organization Position.
 Creating password in your ATM card.
 A combination lock in your closet.

Solves Problem Involving Permutations

Types of Permutations:

1. Linear Permutation
Linear permutation- an ordered arrangement of
objects in a line.

Rule 1: The number of permutations of n distinct

objects taken all at a time is denoted by nPn & define
as
P(n,n) =n!

Factorial- the product of a positive integer and all the

integers less than to it. (n!)

For example, in how many ways you can arrange

three picture frames in a row?
Given: P= ?, n=3
P(n,n) =n!
P(3,3) =3!
3!= (3)(2)(1)
=6

2. Permutation without Repetition

Rule 2: The number of permutations of n objects
taken r at a time without repetition, where r n.

Where,
P is the total number of permutations
n is the total number of objects in the set
r is the total number of choosing objects in the set

For instance, how many ways can 6 students be

seated from a groufie if only 4 seats are available?
Given:
P=?, n= 6 and r= 4

3. Permutation with Repetition or Replacement

Rule 3: The number of permutation of n objects
taken r at a time, with repetition, is given by
P = nr
For example, how many 5-letter ordered codes can
be formed with the letters of the set (E,F,G,H) if we
allow to use repeated use of the same letter?
Given:
P=?, n= 4, r= 5
P = nr
P = (4)5
P = 1024

4.Distinguishable Permutation
Distinguishable permutation from the name itself, are
permutations (or arrangements) that can be
distinguished from one another.

Rule 4: The number of permutation of n objects

where there are n1 repeated items, n2 repeated items,
… nk repeated items.

For example, find the number of ways we can

arrange the letter of the word PHILIPPINES.
Given:
P= ? n=11, n1=3, n2=3
P = P =
P =1,108,800

5. Circular Permutation
Circular permutation is an ordered arrangement of
objects in a circular manner.

Rule 5: The number of permutation of n objects

arranged in a circle is given by
P= (n-1)!

For instance, in how many different ways can five

people be seated in a circle?
Given:
P=?, n= 5
P = (n-1)!
P = (5-1)!
P = 4!
P = 24
