Chapter 2
Energy Efficiency Challenges in 5G Network
Despite the numerous benefits that 5G networks offer, they pose several challenges when it
comes to energy efficiency. Some of the key challenges are:

 Massive deployment of base stations and data centers: 5G networks require a

massive deployment of base stations and data centers to provide coverage and
capacity, resulting in high energy consumption and operational costs.
 High computational requirements: 5G networks require significant computational
power to process and transmit massive amounts of data, resulting in high energy
consumption and thermal issues.
 Increased complexity and heterogeneity: 5G networks are more complex and
heterogeneous than previous generations of wireless networks, making it challenging
to optimize and manage their energy consumption effectively.
 Dynamic traffic patterns: 5G networks are designed to support diverse and
dynamic traffic patterns, which makes it challenging to balance the energy
consumption and network performance.
 Limited battery life of devices: 5G devices, such as smartphones and IoT sensors,
have limited battery life, which requires energy-efficient strategies to extend their
operational time.
Addressing these challenges requires innovative and energy-efficient methods that can
reduce the energy consumption of 5G networks without compromising their performance
and reliability. The next section will review some of these methods in detail.

2.1 Overview of the Energy Consumption in 5G Network

The energy consumption of 5G networks is a critical concern for network operators,
regulators, and stakeholders. According to a report by Ericsson, 5G networks are expected
to consume up to three times more energy per data transfer than 4G networks due to their
massive deployment of base stations and data centres.

The following are some of the main sources of energy consumption in 5G networks:
i. Base stations: Base stations are essential components of 5G networks and require a
significant amount of energy to operate. The number of base stations required for 5G
networks is much higher than that of previous generations of wireless networks due
to their use of high-frequency spectrum and small cell architecture.

Figure 2 Figure 2 -Base Station

ii. Data centers: 5G networks generate massive amounts of data that need to be
processed, stored, and transmitted. This requires the deployment of large data centers
that consume a significant amount of energy for cooling and power supply.

Figure 2.1-Data Center

iii. Devices: 5G devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and IoT sensors, also consume
energy during data transfer and processing. The limited battery life of these devices
requires energy-efficient strategies to extend their operational time.

Figure 2.2 5G Devices

iv. Backhaul and transport networks: Backhaul and transport networks are required
to connect base stations and data centers to the core network. These networks
consume a significant amount of energy for data transmission and routing.

Page | 8

Figure 2.3-Backhaul and Transport Network

v. Network management and operations: 5G networks require sophisticated network

management and operations, which consume energy for network monitoring,
optimization, and security.
Reducing the energy consumption of 5G networks requires a holistic approach that
addresses all the above sources of energy consumption. The next sections will
discuss some of the energy-efficient methods that can be applied to 5G networks.

2.2 Factors Affecting Energy Consumption in 5G Network:

Several factors can affect the energy consumption of 5G networks, including:
i. Network architecture: The network architecture of 5G networks, such as the
deployment of base stations and data centers, can significantly impact their energy
consumption. The use of small cells, for example, can reduce the energy
consumption of 5G networks by enabling more efficient use of the radio spectrum
and reducing the power requirements of individual cells.

Figure 2.4 -5G Network Architecture

Page | 9
Dept. of ECE, Gov. SKSJTI
ENERGY EFFICIENT METHODS FOR 5G NETWORK 2022-23

ii. Network traffic: The amount and type of network traffic in 5G networks can affect
their energy consumption. High-bandwidth applications, such as video streaming,
require more energy to transmit data than low-bandwidth applications, such as
messaging. Therefore, optimizing the network for different types of traffic can help
reduce energy consumption.
iii. Radio access technology: The choice of radio access technology, such as Massive
MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) and beamforming, can affect the energy
consumption of 5G networks. For example, Massive MIMO can improve the energy
efficiency of 5G networks by reducing the number of required base stations and
improving the coverage and capacity of individual cells
iv. Network management and optimization: Effective network management and
optimization can help reduce the energy consumption of 5G networks. For example,
dynamic spectrum allocation can optimize the use of the radio spectrum, while smart
power management can reduce the energy consumption of individual network
components.
v. Renewable energy sources: The use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and
wind power, can help reduce the carbon footprint and energy consumption of 5G
networks. The use of hybrid power systems that combine renewable and non-
renewable energy sources can also help improve the energy efficiency and
sustainability of 5G networks.
Addressing these factors requires a coordinated effort from network operators, regulators,
and stakeholders. The next section will discuss some of the energy-efficient methods that
can be applied to 5G networks.

2.3 Comparison with 4G/LTE Networks:

Compared to 4G/LTE networks, 5G networks offer significant improvements in data transfer
rates, latency, and network capacity. However, these improvements come at the cost of
higher energy consumption. Here are some of the main differences between 4G/LTE and 5G
networks regarding energy efficiency:

i. Deployment density: 5G networks require much higher deployment density than

4G/LTE networks, meaning that more base stations are required to cover the same
area. As a result, 5G networks consume more energy than 4G/LTE networks due to
the additional power required to operate more base stations.
ii. Data transmission rates: 5G networks have much higher data transmission rates

Page | 10
Dept. of ECE, Gov. SKSJTI
ENERGY EFFICIENT METHODS FOR 5G NETWORK 2022-23

than 4G/LTE networks, which requires more energy to transmit data at such high
speeds.
iii. Network architecture: 5G networks have a different architecture than 4G/LTE
networks. For example, 5G networks use small cells that require less power than
traditional base stations but need to be deployed in larger numbers.
iv. Radio access technology: 5G networks use different radio access technologies than
4G/LTE networks, such as Massive MIMO and beamforming, which can reduce
energy consumption by improving the efficiency of radio spectrum use.
Overall, while 5G networks offer significant improvements over 4G/LTE networks in terms
of network performance and capacity, they also consume more energy. Therefore, energy-
efficient methods are essential to minimize the environmental impact of 5G networks and
reduce operational costs for network operators. The next section will discuss some of the
energy-efficient methods that can be applied to 5G network

3. Virtualization: Network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined

networking (SDN) can help reduce the energy consumption of 5G networks by
enabling more efficient use of network resources. By virtualizing network functions
and optimizing network traffic, NFV and SDN can reduce the need for physical
network components, reducing energy consumption and operating costs.
4. Small cells: small cells are low-power base stations that can be deployed in large
numbers to provide more targeted coverage and capacity. By using small cells
instead of traditional base stations, network operators can reduce the energy
consumption of 5G networks while improving network performance.

Figure 3.3-Small Cell Antenna

Page | 14
Dept. of ECE, Gov. SKSJTI
ENERGY EFFICIENT METHODS FOR 5G NETWORK 2022-23

By applying these energy-efficient techniques, network operators can reduce the energy
consumption of 5G networks while maintaining or improving network performance and
capacity. However, implementing these techniques requires a coordinated effort from
network operators, regulators, and stakeholders to ensure their effectiveness and
sustainability.

3.1 Use of Renewable Energy Sources

The use of renewable energy sources is an effective way to reduce the carbon footprint and
energy consumption of 5G networks. Here are some of the renewable energy sources that
can be used to power 5G networks:

i. Solar power: Solar power is a renewable energy source that uses solar panels to
convert sunlight into electricity. Solar power can be used to power 5G base stations
and data centers, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and reducing carbon emissions.
ii. Wind power: Wind power is a renewable energy source that uses wind turbines to
generate electricity. Wind power can be used to power 5G base stations and data
centers, especially in areas with high wind speeds.
iii. Hydro power: Hydro power is a renewable energy source that uses water to generate
electricity. Hydro power can be used to power 5G networks in areas with access to
rivers or other water sources.
iv. Geothermal power: Geothermal power is a renewable energy source that uses the
heat from the Earth to generate electricity. Geothermal power can be used to power
5G networks in areas with access to geothermal energy.

Figure 3.4-SmartGrid System

Page | 15

ENERGY EFFICIENT METHODS FOR 5G NETWORK 2022-23

The use of renewable energy sources can help reduce the energy consumption of 5G
networks and mitigate the environmental impact of the network. However, the deployment
of renewable energy sources requires careful planning and coordination with local
authorities and stakeholders. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources can be
subject to geographic and weather-related limitations, which can impact the reliability and
cost-effectiveness of the energy source. Therefore, network operators need to carefully
evaluate the suitability and feasibility of renewable energy sources for their specific network
deployment.

3.2 Virtualization and Network Slicing

Network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) can help
reduce the energy consumption of 5G networks by enabling more efficient use of network
resources. Here are some of the virtualization and network slicing techniques that can be
used to optimize energy consumption in 5G networks:

i. Network function virtualization (NFV): NFV involves replacing dedicated

network appliances with software-based network functions that can run on general-
purpose servers. By virtualizing network functions such as firewalls, load balancers,
and intrusion detection systems, operators can reduce the need for dedicated
hardware, which can lead to lower energy consumption.

Figure 3.5-Network function virtualization

iii. Network slicing: Network slicing involves partitioning a physical network into
multiple virtual networks, each with its own resources and network functions. By
allocating network resources dynamically based on network demand, operators can
optimize network performance and reduce energy consumption.

Figure 3.7-Network Slicing

iv. Edge computing: Edge computing involves deploying computing resources closer
to the end-users or devices, reducing the need for data to be transported over the
network. By processing data locally, edge computing can reduce the amount of data
transmitted over the network, leading to lower energy consumption.
By applying these virtualization and network slicing techniques, network operators can
reduce the energy consumption of 5G networks while maintaining or improving network
performance and capacity. However, implementing these techniques requires a coordinated
effort from network operators, regulators, and stakeholders to ensure their effectiveness and
sustainability. Additionally, network operators need to carefully evaluate the trade-offs
between energy efficiency, network performance, and cost when deploying these
techniques.

3.3 Energy-Aware Radio Resource Management

Radio resource management (RRM) plays a critical role in managing the energy
consumption of 5G networks. Energy-aware RRM techniques aim to optimize the use of
radio resources while minimizing energy consumption. Here are some of the energy-aware
RRM techniques that can be used to improve the energy efficiency of 5G networks:

Page | 18
Dept. of ECE, Gov. SKSJTI
ENERGY EFFICIENT METHODS FOR 5G NETWORK 2022-23

i. Dynamic spectrum sharing: Dynamic spectrum sharing involves dynamically

allocating spectrum resources based on network demand. By allocating spectrum
resources more efficiently, operators can optimize network performance and reduce
energy consumption.

Figure 3.8-Dyanamic Spectrum Sharing

ii. Power control: Power control involves adjusting the transmit power of base stations
and user devices to optimize network coverage and capacity while minimizing
energy consumption. By adjusting the transmit power based on the distance between
the base station and user device, operators can reduce energy consumption without
compromising network performance.
iii. Sleep mode: Sleep mode involves putting base stations and user devices in a low-
power state during periods of low network activity. By reducing the power
consumption of idle devices, operators can significantly reduce the energy
consumption of 5G networks.
iv. Beamforming: Beamforming involves directing radio signals towards specific user
devices, improving signal strength and reducing interference. By optimizing the use
of beamforming, operators can reduce the need for high transmit power and improve
energy efficiency.

Figure 3.9-Beamforming

Page | 19

ENERGY EFFICIENT METHODS FOR 5G NETWORK 2022-23

Energy-aware RRM techniques can significantly reduce the energy consumption of 5G

networks while maintaining or improving network performance. However, these techniques
require sophisticated algorithms and real-time network monitoring to ensure their
effectiveness. Additionally, the deployment of energy-aware RRM techniques requires
careful coordination with network operators, device manufacturers, and regulators to ensure
their interoperability and compatibility.

3.4 Edge Computing and Cloud RAN

Edge computing and Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) are two related techniques that can
help improve the energy efficiency of 5G networks.

i. Edge computing: Edge computing involves deploying computing resources closer to the
end-users or devices, reducing the need for data to be transported over the network. By
processing data locally, edge computing can reduce the amount of data transmitted over the
network, leading to lower energy consumption. Additionally, by deploying edge computing
resources in a distributed manner, operators can reduce the need for centralized data centers,
which can further reduce energy consumption.

Figure 3.10 -Edge Computing

ii. Cloud RAN: C-RAN involves centralizing baseband processing functions in a cloud-based
data center, enabling more efficient use of network resources. By centralizing baseband
processing, operators can optimize the use of processing resources and reduce the need for
dedicated hardware, leading to lower energy consumption.

Page | 20

ENERGY EFFICIENT METHODS FOR 5G NETWORK 2022-23

Figure 3.11-Cloud RAN

Both edge computing and C-RAN can significantly improve the energy efficiency of 5G networks
while maintaining or improving network performance. However, these techniques require significant
investments in network infrastructure and computing resources, and careful coordination with device
manufacturers and regulators to ensure their compatibility and interoperability.

Furthermore, the deployment of these techniques can have implications for network latency, security,
and data privacy, which must be carefully considered and addressed.

3.5 Small Cells and Massive MIMO

Small cells and Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) are two techniques that
can help improve the energy efficiency of 5G networks.

i. Small cells: small cells are low-power, short-range base stations that can be used to
offload traffic from macro base stations. By deploying small cells in areas with high
network demand, operators can improve network coverage and capacity while
reducing the need for high-power macro base stations. This can lead to lower energy
consumption, as small cells typically require less power than macro base stations.
ii. Massive MIMO: Massive MIMO
involves using a large number of
antennas at the base station to improve
network capacity and coverage. By
using advanced signal processing
techniques, Massive MIMO can also
reduce interference and improve
spectral efficiency, leading to lower Figure 3.12--MIMO

energy consumption.

Both small cells and Massive MIMO can significantly improve the energy efficiency of 5G
networks while maintaining or improving network performance. However, these techniques
require careful planning and coordination with network operators to ensure their effective
deployment. Additionally, the deployment of these techniques can have implications for
network latency, interference, and spectrum availability, which must be carefully considered
and addressed.

techniques in 5G network. It involves evaluating the costs and benefits of adopting energy-
efficient techniques to determine if they are feasible and economically viable. This analysis
helps network operators make informed decisions about whether to invest in energy-efficient
technologies and how to prioritize their deployment.

The cost-benefit analysis involves identifying the costs associated with deploying energy-
efficient techniques, such as the cost of equipment, installation, and maintenance. It also
involves identifying the benefits that can be achieved, such as reduced energy consumption,
lower operational costs, and improved network performance. These benefits can translate
into financial savings, increased revenue, and enhanced user experience.

To perform a cost-benefit analysis, network operators should consider the following

factors:

1. Energy consumption: The first step in the analysis is to understand the energy
consumption patterns in the network. This involves identifying the areas of the

Page | 24

consider the operational benefits that can be achieved through the deployment of
energy-efficient techniques. This includes improved network performance, increased
reliability, and reduced downtime.
5. Return on investment (ROI): Finally, network operators should evaluate the ROI
associated with the deployment of energy-efficient techniques. This involves
comparing the costs of deployment with the benefits achieved to determine if the
investment is economically viable.

In conclusion, cost-benefit analysis is a crucial step in the implementation and deployment

of energy-efficient techniques in 5G network. It helps network operators make informed
decisions about the deployment of energy-efficient technologies, prioritize investments, and
achieve maximum ROI. By carefully evaluating the costs and benefits of adopting energy-
efficient techniques, network operators can reduce energy consumption, lower operational
costs, and improve network performance and reliability.

countries, network operators are required to report their energy consumption and emissions
levels regularly. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in penalties and fines.

Standardization frameworks are put in place by industry bodies to ensure that energy-
efficient techniques are interoperable with other network equipment. These frameworks
ensure that equipment from different manufacturers can work together seamlessly,
improving the efficiency and performance of the network. Standardization also ensures that
energy-efficient techniques are designed with security and privacy in mind, protecting user
data and preventing unauthorized access.

The two main standardization bodies for 5G networks are the International
Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). These
bodies are responsible for developing standards for 5G networks, including those related to
energy efficiency.

The ITU is responsible for setting global standards for telecommunications. The ITU's
standards cover a wide range of areas, including energy efficiency, interoperability, and
security. The ITU's energy efficiency standards cover the design, operation, and
maintenance of telecommunications equipment and facilities.

The 3GPP is responsible for developing standards for mobile telecommunications networks,
including 5G. The 3GPP's standards cover a wide range of areas, including radio access,
core network, and system architecture. The 3GPP's energy efficiency standards cover the
design and operation of radio access networks, core networks, and base stations.

In conclusion, regulatory and standardization frameworks are critical to the implementation

and deployment of energy-efficient techniques in 5G networks. These frameworks ensure
that energy-efficient techniques comply with regulatory requirements and are interoperable
with other network equipment. By following these guidelines and standards, network
operators can improve the energy efficiency, performance, and security of their networks,
