Outline
• Background
• The need for development on Phinisi Yacht
• Roadmap research

• Historical review
• Experiences
• Track record
• Funding
• Potential Partners
Background
• Traditional vessels
• At present there are some 3000 as cargo carriers
• Phinisi as popular type among those vessel
• Phinisi Yacht Potential
• Increasing number of Phinisi Yachts currently operate for marine tourism purposes in few
exotic areas of Indonesia (Labuan Bajo, Raja Ampat, Wakatobi, Bunaken)
• Phinisi as a heritage ship originated from Indonesia and it has potential to be developed in
east Indonesia (Maluku, & Seram)
• Challenges: Lower safety and lower efficiency operations
• Government policies to improve traditional shipping:
• Shipping Law Number 17 Year 2008
• Presidential Decree Number 74 On People Shipping Empowerment
• Action Plan Development of People Shipping by Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and
Investment Affair:
• New building : 500 units
• New ports of pelra
• Traditional vessels as a feeder for supporting maritime highway programme

Phinisi Improvement Ideas (1) Calculating sail force and the stability
effect to gain proper voyage under sail.
Sail will no longer serve as esthetic
purposes only but properly design to
reduce the need of fossil fuel.

Improve safety equipment and life

saving appliances according to SOLAS
requirements.
Using solar cloth to harvest more
energy…?

Traditional phinisi used as a cargo vessel with most of her cargo under deck, converting the phinisi to a
yacht with relatively no cargo weight under deck need proper ballast to achieve desired center of
gravity to meet minimum stability criteria.
Phinisi Improvement Ideas (2)
Properly planned emergency escape route and
Integration with IoT System; hatches custom to the layout and number of
• Tracking, monitoring voyages passengers are commonly neglected at
• Energy, work on automation traditionally built phinisi yacht nowadays.
• Safety, equipped with emergency system
• Alerts, information history
• One dashboard, showing all information in
one monitor
• Routes history, voyage history information
• Nautical maps, providing information of sea
depths

Use of marine engine & electric propulsion with

possibility of conversion to hybrid engine (battery
& duel fuel engine generator…?)

Phinisi yacht completed with potable tanks and

integrated as double bottom to be used as a
reserve buoyancy.
Phinisi Improvement Ideas (3)
Solar Panel, supply of lights on one deck and navigational
equipment (harvesting energy during the present of the sun)
Mini vertical axis wind turbine generator, additional
energy supply (harvesting energy 24/7 as long as the
wind blows). Vertical type can receive wind from all
directions, put whole lot of it around the top deck rails.
Joint between wood plank for shell
construction are used traditional “pakal”
system required to be maintained every
years. It will be replaced with hull
laminated constructions.
Traditional phinisi used huge size of raw wooden
log which is getting hard to obtain, research need
to be done to achieve smaller raw wooden
material with same or even more strength with
some modern method (laminate, or composite,
or combining it with steel structure…..?)
