ACHYUT KANVINDE
 About Achyut Kanvinde
Birth : 9 February 1916
(in konkan region of Maharashtra)

Demise : 28 December 2002

Education :
• Completed Bachelors in Architecture from Sir J.J College of Architecture,
Mumbai.
• (1935 – 1940) Studied Design in Harvard under Walter Gropius.

Kanvinde returned to India in the latter half of 1947, and joined the Council of
Scientific and Industrial Research, one of the Central Government
organizations responsible for the development of science and technology in
India.

Kanvinde's own architectural contribution came with the design of the

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research headquarters in New Delhi, the
Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee, and the Central Engineering
Research Institute in Pilani. In 1985, Kanvinde won the IIA "Baburao Mhatre
Gold Medal".

Kanvinde established a private practice partnership with Shaukat Rai, a civil

engineer and structural designer, in New Delhi in the 1950s. Both admit that
they were heavily influenced by the ideas of the Bauhaus teachers, and fired
by the vision which seems to have gripped the minds of powerful
policymakers in India too at that time - that science and technology held the
key to the growth of the newly independent nation.

Principles

A few evident principles that are visible in Achyut sir’s designs:

• Kanvinde plays with space and forms.

• His designs are slender, balanced, proportionate, neat and well crafted.
• The building is important but most important is the gate, the entrance of
the user.
• He gave much more importance to the natural light.
• He would give forms to the building that could solve the problem of
ventilation as well as excessive heat.
• He believed in vernacular architecture.
• He believed that the image should be such that can set the mood and
interest for which the building stands for.
• Both inherent values and historical influences contribute towards good
architecture.
