PROBLEM:

A group of students at Holy Angel University (HAU) wants to look into the relationship
between the number of meals consumed per day (x) and the current weight (y) of Senior High
School students in grade 11 ABM St. Margaret. According to Paoli et al. (2019), the number of
meals one takes per day can affect their weight. Therefore, meal frequency can have a
significant impact on someone's weight depending on the effects of their environment. To gain a
deeper grasp of the subject, the students made survey questionnaires and distributed them to
determine the data of the chosen subset of the group. The table below shows the data gathered
from the survey for senior high school students.

Complete the table and graph and compute the correlation coefficient. Describe the
strength of the relationship between the number of meals consumed per day and the weight of
senior high school students from St. Margaret.

SOLUTION:

𝑛(∑   𝑥𝑦) − (∑   𝑥 )(∑   𝑦)

𝑟  =
√[𝑛(∑   𝑥 2 ) − (∑   𝑥 )2 ][𝑛(∑   𝑦 2 ) − (∑   𝑦)2 ]

10(1162) − (24)(480)
𝑟  =
√[10(66) − (24)2 ][10(23358) − (480)2 ]

100
𝑟  =
√[84][3180]

𝒓  =  𝟎. 𝟏𝟗𝟑𝟓

INTERPRETATION:

Therefore, the group of students can say that there is a weak positive relationship
between the number of meals consumed per day and the weight.
