The overall concept of our master plan with easy and clear oriantation.

The landscape flows into town. The area around the “Waldbühne”, the so called “Morellenschlucht”, is
surrounded by dense tree population. At the rest of the area sports grounds dominate the picture. In our
design both the wild nature of the “Waldbühne” and the tamed landscape of the sportsareas are clear
defined.
The “Waldbühne” accommodates up to 20 000 spectators and lies in the center of the area. It is at the
same time the turning point from the wild to the artificial side of the area. For this reason the main paths
lead straight from the train station to it. The scheme of the paths is leaned on the English garden archi-
tecture of the 19th Century and with its primary and back roads a fluent design is formed. The concep-
tion came up with the thought of the dense forest around the “Waldbühne” which spreads all over the
area and is evidence of the orientation. The paths have different speeds, so that the primary paths are
ideal for the crowds of people, who were attracted by big events at the “Waldbühne”. The back paths
however invite for strolling and for discovering of numerous attractions. At those “slow” paths are a Cof-
fee shop and a range of sitting accommodations arranged.

Master plan

The area is divided into three zones: the rapid-transit railway station with the promenade
above, the sport and leisure centers between Glockenturmstraße and Passenheimer Straße,
and the “Waldbühne”, with the hotel, opposite Glockenturmstrasse.
The concept for the accessibility consists of different orientation systems through the vegetation
of the park landscape. For this reason the configuration of the trees fulfill different purposes.
The most important function is to lead visitors through the enormous terrain. This can be reached
most effectively by avenues, whereas a group of trees have more a separating character. Soli-
taire standing trees gain attention. The fourth type is a group of trees arranged in a half circle,
which gives privacy and shelter of the sun. Additional water dispenser and benches helps the
visitors to get new energy.
To ensure a barrier-free area, ramps and lifts are provided. Each of them is for different uti- master plan // scale 1: 2000
lizations. The ramps for example, are for a slower kind of movement whereas the lifts make a
direct connection possible. Visitors are led towards those points by the tactile guiding system. A
red stripe, which is embedded into the floor, allows because of its luminous colour and the con-
sistency of the surface, orientation for visually impaired people and also for those who visit the
area for the first time. This stripe leads the visitors, after getting off the train, to five different
points at the train station, where the stairs and lifts are located. There is also hand railing in the
same colour designed for the same purpose. For more information about the area, the crossings
are equipped with signs.

The “Waldbühne“ forms the center of the design and is open to the public. It becomes a part
of the forest and is accessible at all times, being zoned off for special events only. The visitors
reach the upper levels on the existing stairs and sloping lifts, but also via a spiral ramp, which
winds down and around the circle of the amphitheatre. The path on the ramp leads through the
treetops of the area at a height of 30 meters and is therefore an extraordinary experience
for all visitors. The ramp links both sites of the “Murelenschlucht” with each other. On the way is
a small coffee shop, which snuggles into the terrain.Red stripes are embedded into the floor to

From every passage the seats “access for all” are reachable. food kiosk
The WC facilities are at the passages arranged. The backstage area is behind the stage and
is connected to the administration building via an underground passage. The backstage area
contains fitting rooms and make-up rooms on the ground floor.
Located on the upper floors of the building are the installation rooms as well as a Coffee shop.

Pichelsberg Station

The railway network is the main artery of the terrain. The train gives the possibility of a fast connec-
tion into and out of town. This symbolises mobility and urban life. Our concept starts here with a guid-
ing system, which leads the arriving passengers through tactile and visual allurements not only to the
“Waldbühne” but also to many other attractions. A red stripe, which is embedded into the floor, allows
because of its luminous colour and the consistency of the surface, orientation for visually impaired peo-
ple and also for those who visit the area for the first time. This stripe leads the visitors, after getting off
the train, to five different points at the train station, where the stairs and lifts are located. Those convey
them to a promenade, which is above the train station and serves as a roof and reception. The way from
the train station up to the level of the promenade is planned as an adventurous, hydraulically operated
platform with no commercial cage and different designs. To welcome the visitors a bike rental, an infor-
mation center and a range of seat accommodations are found at this location. Some specific made visual
relationships through the park landscape helps for orientation. Tree alleys guide the visitors in the right
direction.

At the primary path to the “Waldbühne” is the hotel with a wellness area and seminar rooms
