Genetics Worksheet - Dihybrid Crosses

In pea plants, seed shape can be smooth (S) or wrinkled (s), and seed colour can be yellow (Y) or green (y).
1. Write all of the possible genotypes with their corresponding phenotypes below. Some have already been
done for you.

Genotype: SSYY SsYY ssYY

Phenotype: smooth yellow smooth yellow wrinkled yellow

2. If we cross a SSYY (homozygous dominant) plant with a ssyy (homozygous recessive) plant, then all of
the offspring will have the same phenotype and genotype. What are they?

3. If two heterozygous plants are crossed, ie SsYy and SsYy, fill out the punnet square below to show all of
the possible genotypes and phenotypes. Then write down the expected ratio of phenotypes below.

Ratio of phenotypes:
4. In a test cross, a known homozygous recessive is crossed with another plant with dominant characteristics
whose genotype is unknown. This way we can find out if the unknown plant is homozygous dominant or
homozygous dominant.

We already established in question 2 that if we cross a homozygous recessive (ssyy) with a homozygous
dominant (SSYY) then all of the offspring will look the same.

What happens if we cross a homozygous recessive (ssyy) with a heterozygous dominant (SsYy) plant?

Complete the punnett grid below and fill in the expected ratio of phenotypes:
