FC1200 CENTRIFUGE
START-UP SEQUENCE & ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS

Subject: Standards Manual - Work Instruction Revision No.: 0

PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to provide the responsible person with all the relevant information
concerning the FC1200 Centrifuge, Start-up Sequence & Electrical requirements.

SCOPE
This work instruction gives a general description of the start-up sequence and electrical
requirements of the FC1200 Centrifuge. It is advisable that the user acquaints themselves with the
pre-commissioning check list and the Pressure Switch data sheet in the Standard Installation,
Operation & Maintenance Manual before proceeding.

GENERAL INFORMATION

a) Electrical Control Equipment.

The centrifuge is driven through connected pulleys and V-belts by a 55kW, 4 pole, 1475 RPM,
T.E.F.C. drip-proof motor. An uninterrupted Star Delta start (incorporating a 15-second maximum
start time) is used. The Lubrication motor is controlled via a DOL (Direct on Line) starter. (Refer to
FC1200 Centrifuge Schematic Diagram Star Delta Start, DRG No. 30/FC1200/31/004.

The following points must be kept in mind before installing in FC1200 Centrifuge.

i. The motor should have thermal as well as electrical protection.

ii. Furthermore, it is advisable to place an ammeter in the motor electrical circuit, permitting the
load to be read at all times.
iii. A magnetic combination starter is used with a squirrel cage motor. The start-stop push button
station should be located in the immediate vicinity of the machine.
iv. Heavy shocks when starting or during operation must be avoided since they will damage the
driving and driven gears and bearings.
v. The motor and horizontal driving shafts and the pulleys must be checked for accurate
alignment.
vi. The main drive motor should be interlocked with the lubrication pump drive motor with a
90-second delay between the starting of the lubrication pump motor and main drive motor, as
this will prevent damage to bearings and gears.

NO LUBRICATION – NO DRIVE!!!

vii. Another timer must be incorporated with the main drive and lubrication pump to allow the
lubrication pump to continue running for one (1) full minute after the main drive is shut down.
This ensures full protection to bearings and gears during run down times.
viii. It is important that all motors are controlled by individual starters. In general, each contactor
is equipped with:-
• Triple pole interlocked isolator.
• 'Back-Up' H R C fuses.
• Triple pole air break direct-on-line contactor of adequate rating.
• Over current protection.
• Ammeter.
• 'Local/Remote' change-over switch.
• 'Sequence in/sequence out' change-over switch.
• Integral 'start/stop' push buttons.
• Non-automatic sequence interlock.
• Contactor Closed' indicating lamp.

In addition, we recommend that earth leakage protection, either individual or group, be

provided on the contactor board. During the starting and operation of the centrifuge, it is
essential that the motors be interlocked to ensure starting in correct sequence and also to
ensure that if any one motor stops, all other motors per centrifuge stop in sequence.
Drawing 30/FC1200/31/004 shows the schematic diagram of the FC1200 Centrifuge.

b) Electric Motor Data

• Main Drive: 55 kW, 4-pole, 380/525V-50hz, foot mounted.

• Lubrication: 1.5kW, 4-pole, 380/525V-50hz, foot & flange mounted.

c) Start-up Procedure

The correct starting sequence is as follows:-

i. Start Oil Pump Motor.

ii. After approximately 90 seconds, start Main Drive motor.
iii. Start coal feed to Centrifuge.

The above starting sequence is non-automatic. Each motor is controlled by its own 'Start' and
'Stop' buttons since each centrifuge is fitted with a pressure switch, which must be
interconnected so that the main rotation motor cannot be started without the lubrication unit
being in operation and having run for at least 90 seconds, and that the desired system
pressure has been reached, and maintained. It is also advisable to extend the interlocking
system to the device feeding the centrifuge so that the feed is cut off should any stop of the

centrifuge be caused either intentionally or unintentionally. (DRG No. 30/FC1200/31/004 shows

a schematic of the Star Delta, Soft Start).

NOTES:

i. To protect the moving parts of the machine, it is essential that the main rotation motor
cannot be started without the lubrication unit being in operation and having run for at
the desired pressure for at least 90 seconds.
ii. Automatic initiation from one push button may be permitted providing the order
described in point c) i to c) iii is maintained together with relevant delays.

d) Shut-down Procedure

i. Shut off the coal feed to the centrifuge.

ii. Shut off the Main Drive Motor 60 seconds after having shut off the feed.
iii. Shut off Oil Pump motor 60 seconds after Main Drive Motor has been shut off.
