Hgher-Order Linear Di¤erential Equations1
In what follows, we show how the analysis done for second-order linear
di¤erentiable equations extends to linear equations of any order. For
convenience, the new results are stated next to their counterparts for
second-order equations.
Nonhomogeneous equation

(n ) (n 1 )
y + p1 (x )y + + pn (x )y = F (x ) (1b)
with p, q and f as well as p1 , pn and F being continuous on I .
Homogeneous equation
y 00 + p (x )y 0 + q (x )y = 0 (2a)
(n ) (n 1 )
y + p1 (x )y + + pn (x )y = 0 (2b)
Initial-value problem: (1) or (2) coupled with (3)
y (a) = b0 , y 0 (a) = b1 (3a)
y (a) = b0 , y 0 (a) = b1 , , y (n 1)
(a) = bn 1 (3b)

De…nition & Theorem A1
Two solutions y1 2 S (I ) and y2 2 S (I ) are linearly independent if
c1 y1 + c2 y2 = 0 =) c1 = c2 = 0;
this is equivalent to saying that their Wronskian
y1 (x ) y2 (x )
W (y1 (x ), y2 (x )) := det 6= 0, 8x 2 I
y10 (x ) y20 (x )
De…nition & Theorem B1
The n solutions y1 2 S (I ), , yn 2 S (I ) are linearly independent if
c1 y1 + + cn yn = 0 =) c1 = = cn = 0;
this is equivalent to saying that their Wronskian
