Scorchbeast Queen

Level 20, Mutated Bat

Legendary Creature (432 XP)

Originating from an accidental decision when Enclave scientists in

Appalachia in which irradiated bats were exposed to biochemical
experiments, the Scorchbeasts are an artificial, apex predator that
spread terror and death in its wake.

Used by Secretary Thomas Eckhart – now President of the Appalachian

chapter of the Enclave – to convince monitoring systems to raise the
alert level to DEFCON 1 in order to give him access to the nuclear
arsenal in the region, unleashing them on the region to set his plan in
motion to ultimately use the nuclear missiles America still had to resume
its war with China. However, this decision would unintentionally release
pestilence upon Appalachia that threatened to render the human race
extinct on a continental scale.

Regularly digging to the surface from their subterranean territory, these

creatures effortlessly destroyed settlements and devoured humans while
also carrying around a contagious infection that afflicted humans and
many other creatures with the Scorched Plague – mutating what was
infected to fall into a hive mind under the Scorchbeasts themselves.

At the top of the food chain, and the biggest threat in Appalachia, was
the Scorchbeast Queen herself. Being the primary source of Scorchbeasts
through natural breeding – and by extension the Scorched Plague – she
holds the future of the Wasteland and humanity’s fate in her claws as
her minions continue to spread the infection, causing the humans in the
region to either be mutated by the plague or flee Appalachia altogether.

Special Abilities
• Aggressive: The Scorchbeast Queen is quick to action when it senses
prey. When the Scorchbeast Queen enters a scene, immediately generate
1 Action Point. If the Scorchbeast Queen is an ally, then it goes into
the group pool. If it is an enemy, it goes into the GM’s pool.
• Gargantuan: The Scorchbeast Queen is among the biggest creatures that
could be encountered in the Wasteland, reaching the size of a giant.
This creature receives +2 HP per level, but its Defense decreases by 2,
to a minimum of 1. Further, it only suffers a Critical Hit if an attack
inflicts +9 damage (After damage resistance) in a single hit, rather
than the normal 5+.
• Flying: The Scorchbeast Queen can move freely through the air. It can
ignore most ground-level obstacles and difficult terrain effects, and
they can move through “empty” zones above the battlefield if desired.
It must spend at least one Minor action each turn moving, and if it is
knocked prone it falls to the ground, suffering 3CD Stun physical
damage, +2CD for each zone above ground level it was before it fell.
• Lunge: If the Scorchbeast Queen moves into Reach and makes a melee
attack in the same turn, it may re-roll 1d20 on the attack. After the
attack, it may spend 1AP to move one zone.
• Shockwave: Once per combat, if the Scorchbeast Queen spends a major
action to move from high altitude down to the ground, it may make a
shockwave attack against all enemies in its zone. This attack benefits
from the Lunge ability. The shockwave is very loud and may attract
nearby enemies such as the many scorched lurking near the Scorchbeast
Queen’s lair.
• Weak spot: The Scorchbeast Queen’s wings have a DR and ER of 4. If the
Scorchbeast Queen’s wing is injured the Scorchbeast Queen will plummet
to the ground suffering falling damage (see flying above). It may spend
AP to reduce the falling damage by 1CD for every AP spent. A Scorchbeast
Queen with an injured wing can’t fly.
• Immune to Disease: The Scorchbeast Queen is immune to the effects of
all diseases, and they will never suffer the symptoms of any disease.
• Immune to Fear: The Scorchbeast Queen cannot be intimidated or
threatened in any way and will either ignore or attack anyone who
attempts to threaten or intimidate it.
• Immune to Poison: The Scorchbeast Queen reduces all Poison damage
duffered to 0 and cannot suffer from any damage or effects from poison.
• Immune to Radiation: The Scorchbeast Queen reduces all Radiation damage
suffered to 0 and cannot suffer any damage or effects from radiation.
• Resilient: Through unknown means, the Scorchbeast Queen is heavily
resistant to damage due to its biological structure. It reduces oncoming
damage enemies successfully deal to it by half, rounded down.
• Primal Rage: Due to its highly aggressive nature, the Scorchbeast Queen
is relentless in its attack and will never back down, no matter the
damage it has sustained. As such, effects from a Critical Hit on its
legs are only temporary; falling prone but then getting back on its
feet on its next turn as if nothing happened. In addition, when it
reaches half its health (Rounded down), it immediately recovers to full
health and grows stronger, dealing +1CD additional damage to its attacks
but increasing Difficulty to attack by 1 - this effect triggers only
once.
• Queen of the Hive: The Scorchbeast Queen is the progenitor of the
Scorched Plague and the master of all Scorchbeasts and Scorched
throughout the region. As such, the Scorchbeast Queen can use its
natural ability as the queen to telepathically control all creatures
afflicted with the Scorched in the area. She may spend 2 AP to summon
1+2CD random creatures afflicted with the Scorched Plague to fight for
her until she dies or they do.
• Scorched Cloud: As the progenitor of the Scorched Plague, the
Scorchbeast Queen can actively afflict enemies with the plague during
combat. To do so, she must be Flying and spend 1 AP. Doing so will
perform a glide to cover one zone in a thick green cloud, infecting
enemies with the Scorched Plague unless they are wearing airborne
protection. Effects are dependent on PCs and NPCs:
o For Players: Players afflicted with the Scorched Plague receive
an increase to Difficulty by 2 for all tests, and damage they
deal with all weapons is reduced by 2CD. This effect persists
until an Antibiotic is taken.
o For NPCs: NPCs afflicted with the Scorched Plague now fight for
the Scorchbeast Queen and her allies, becoming enemies to the
players. This effect is permanent. In addition, they now have the
Scorched special ability.
▪ Scorched: Gains immunity to Disease and Radiation. Anyone
damaged or touched by a Scorched may be infected with the
Scorched Plague disease.
