Introduction

Multiple intelligences are a theory first posited by Harvard developmental

psychologist Howard Gardner in 1983. Multiple Intelligence theory is the idea
that people are smart in different ways. Some people are good at music, others
are good at math, and still others are good at things like art, sports, or
understanding people's feelings.

This theory suggests human intelligence can be differentiated into the following
modalities: logical(mathematics), Musical (Rhythmic), Naturalist, Intrapersonal,
Existentialist, Visual (Spatial), Verbal (Linguistic to do with words), Kinesthetic
(Bodily), Interpersonal. In contrast to other notions of learning capabilities (for
example, the concept of a single IQ), the idea behind the theory of multiple
intelligences is that people learn in a variety of different ways. “I believe that
the brain has evolved over millions of years to be responsive to different kinds
of content in the world,” says Gardner.

Each person has their own unique combination of these intelligences, which
means that everyone is special and smart in their own way.

So, if you're good at playing an instrument, that means you have a strong
musical intelligence. And if you're good at solving puzzles or figuring out math
problems, that means you have a strong logical-mathematical intelligence. And
if you're good at understanding how things fit together in space, that means
you have a strong spatial intelligence.

The important thing to remember is that being smart isn't just about being
good at school subjects. It's about using your unique talents and abilities to
succeed and make a difference in the world.

Howard Gardner suggests that Multiple Intelligence can be differentiated into

nine modalities:

a. Logical (Mathematical)

Skills involved in scientific thinking and problem solving. Person

with this engage in abstract reasoning and can manipulate symbols

3
to solve mathematical problems.
b. Linguistic (Verbal)

Skills involved in the production and use of language. It is the

capacity to use language fluently and flexibly to express one’s
thinking and understands others.
c. Spatial

Skills involved in forming visual images and patterns such as being

imaginative, creative, artistic and visually picture smart.
d. Musical

Sensitivity to musical rhythms and patterns, good sense of sound to

produce, create and manipulate musical patterns.
e. Bodily Kinaesthetic

Uses whole or portion of body flexibly and creatively like dancers,

athletes, actors, gymnasts, sportspersons and surgeons.
f. Existentialist

Sensitivity and capacity to tackle deep questions about human

existence, such as the meaning of life, why we die and how did we
get here.
g. Interpersonal

Sensitivity to subtle aspects of others behavior like the skill to

understand the motives, feeling and behavior of other people.
h. Intrapersonal

Awareness of one’s own feelings, motives and desires.

i. Naturalistic

Sensitivity to the features of the natural world involves complete

awareness of our relationship with the natural world

Analysis of the data and Interpretation

The aim of the above inventory was to identify the dominant and recessive
Intelligence among the students. The sample population comprised of 10th
and 12th class students from Kendriya Vidyalaya National Defence
Academy. Consent to interact and conduct the questionnaire was taken.
The Questionnaire was given to the participants Kendriya Vidyalaya
National Defence Academy in hard copy. There was no time limit
mentioned and honest answers were encouraged and confidentiality was
assured.

As indicated from the above data, Student-4 has obtained a raw score of 70 in
intrapersonal and visual, 60 in musical and logical, 50 in Kinesthetic and verbal, 40
in naturalistic, 30 in existential and last 20 in interpersonal.
Based on the data provided, it can be concluded that Ubed, or Student-4, has scored
highest in intrapersonal and visual intelligence, followed by musical and logical
intelligence. He has also demonstrated strengths in computer skills, puzzle solving,
and enjoys extracurricular activities like debate competitions and public speaking.
Additionally, Ubed values physical fitness, outdoor activities, and has an affinity for
animals. He prefers to work independently and is not talkative in the classroom, but
is able to effectively communicate his thoughts and ideas when necessary.
However, Ubed has lower scores in existential and interpersonal intelligence,
indicating that he may prefer to work alone rather than in a group setting. He also
does not have a desire to be in the spotlight or engage in activities that require him to
be in a big picture.
It is important to note that while multiple intelligence theory can provide insights
into an individual's strengths and preferences, it should not be used to limit or
stereotype individuals based on their intelligence profile. Ubed, like all individuals,
has unique qualities and talents that should be nurtured and supported in a holistic
manner. Student 4 is well aware about his feelings and emotions. Student 4 likes
three-dimensional games and puzzle. Overall, it seems that Ubed has the potential to
excel in fields that require visual and Kinesthetic skills, such as graphic design or
computer engineering. His strengths in intrapersonal intelligence may also be an
asset in these fields, allowing him to work independently and creatively.
With respect to the data provided, it can be concluded that student 4 may succeed in
musical and Kinesthetic and can successfully be a computer engineer or a graphic
designer.

As indicated from the above data, Student-5 has obtained a raw score of 90 in
intrapersonal, 60 in logical, existential and interpersonal, 50 in Kinesthetic, 40 in
naturalistic and visual and last 30 in musical and verbal. This implies that Prithvi has
obtained higher score in intrapersonal. I told him about the characteristics of
intrapersonal and he mentioned that he wants to become a scientist and would love
to go in research field. Student 5 also mentioned that he likes to works with group
but self-learning is also beneficial for him. Prithvi is school captain of his school, and
always have been in a big picture as he is a teacher’s son so now it is important for
him to be in a big picture. Based on the data provided, it can be concluded that
Prithvi, or Student-5, has scored highest in intrapersonal intelligence, followed by
logical, existential, and interpersonal intelligence. He has also demonstrated
strengths in mathematical ability, strategic thinking, and an interest in science and
research. Additionally, he values physical fitness and has an appreciation for
environmental issues. However, Prithvi has lower scores in musical and verbal
intelligence, which may make public speaking and certain types of communication
challenging for him. He also does not have a strong interest in artistic pursuits.
Overall, it seems that Prithvi has the potential to excel in scientific and research
fields, where his strengths in intrapersonal and logical intelligence could be valuable
assets. Additionally, his ability to work effectively in a team and his interest in
physical fitness may serve him well in various professional settings. As per the
conversation I also noticed that he asks a lot of question and before doing this
activity he was the only child who researched first about the activity and then came
to me. Prithvi is good at math and working with numbers and he also likes to play
game which includes strategy. The academic record of the student is also very good
with respect to studies. He comes under the topper list of his class.
With respect to the data provided, it can be concluded that student 3 may succeed in
musical and Kinesthetic and can successfully be a Scientist or researcher.

15
Conclusion

Multiple Intelligence theory helps one to identify one’s weakness and strengths so
individualised instructions or special education needed for a student could be
recommended. The aim of the above inventory was to identify the dominant and
recessive Intelligence among the students. The sample population comprised of 10th
and 12th class students from Kendriya Vidyalaya National Defence Academy. The
participants were selected on the basis of convenient sampling and consisted of 10
participants. Consent to interact and conduct the questionnaire was taken.

Based on the data provided, it can be concluded that the sample population of 11th
and 12th class students from Kendriya Vidyalaya National Defence Academy had
varying levels of intelligence in different domains. The questionnaire results
indicated that some students had higher scores in certain domains, such as musical,
kinesthetic, logical and existential intelligence, while others had lower scores in those
domains.

Overall, the data suggests that each student has unique strengths and weaknesses in
different domains of intelligence. This information can be useful in guiding their
career paths and educational goals by helping them identify their strengths and areas
for improvement.
