Frank Jacobs
Literature and English Teacher
Franciscan High School
31 Lewis Street
Bridgetown, CA, 90210

Dear Sir/Madam,

I write this letter in support of Jan Stewart’s application for the Big Sur Poetry Scholarship. I
had the pleasure of teaching Jan in her 11th and 12th grade English Literature class at
Franciscan High School. She has always impressed me with her ability to be articulate
difficult concepts and understand dense texts. Jan’s sensitivity to the nuances within literature,
and her passion for reading and writing, set her apart both as a student and as a writer.

During her senior year, Jan produced an extraordinary thesis paper on creative identity
development, in which she compared works from three different time periods and synthesized
cultural and historical perspectives to inform her analysis. When called upon to give her
thesis defence in front of her peers, Jan spoke clearly and eloquently about her conclusions
and responded to questions in a thoughtful way. While she shows much promise as a well-
rounded liberal arts student, it is poetry which most interests Jan. She publishes her poetry in
our school’s literary magazine and has also had her work published in online magazines.

Throughout the year Jan was an active participant in our discussions, and she always
supported her peers. Her caring nature and personality allow her to work well with others in a
team setting, as she always respects others’ opinions even when they differ from her own.
Throughout the year, Jan demonstrated this openness to and empathy for the opinions,
feelings, and perspectives of others, along with shrewd powers of observation, all qualities
that makes her outstanding as a student of literature and aspiring poetess.

I am certain that Jan is going to continue to do great and creative things in her future. Her
work, as I am sure you will agree, demonstrates an impressive depth for a young student.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at: fjacobs@email.com.

Sincerely,

Mr. Frank Jacobs

To Whom It May Concern,

It is my great pleasure to recommend Maria for the HENAAC Scholarship. I got to know
Maria as her 11th grade AP biology teacher at Mark Twain High School. Maria was also a
member of the science club which I am the head of, during her sophomore, junior, and senior
year.

From the first day of class, Maria impressed me greatly with her focus and determination.
She never hesitated to ask for help when the course material wasn’t clear and would stay after
school for additional assistance. She showed great interest in the course and her passion for
the field of science is evident.

I was also very impressed by the way she worked with her classmates. Maria got along well
with everyone. She is both caring, respectful, and patient. She often sat with other students
who needed extra help and explained to them the concepts they didn’t understand.
Maria is enrolled at the University of Michigan and will be starting in the fall of 2019. She
plans to major in biology. It is her hopes and dreams to go to medical school following her
undergraduate degree.

There is no doubt in my mind that Maria will succeed in whatever she path she chooses to
take. She was one of my most motivated students who never succumbed to the pressure of
school work and external commitments.
Maria comes from a family of immigrants and will be the first one in her family to get a
college degree. Her parents work very hard to support the family, but finances are a big strain
on her family. Maria worked at a coffee shop during all four years of high school as well as
babysat to help her parents out. She also helped take care of her brother who is 6 years
younger than her.

Maria is very proud of her Hispanic roots. She was a member of the Hispanic club for all four
years of high school. She hopes to encourage other Hispanic students to go to college and
enter the field of science.
Her hard work and effort will get her very far in life and there is no doubt in my mind that
she will succeed. She is very deserving of this scholarship and will greatly contribute to any
community that she’s a part of.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at example@email.com.

Sincerely,
Julie Randalls

College Scholars Program
University of Tennessee
123 Business Rd.
Business City, NY 54321

To Whom It May Concern:

It is with much enthusiasm that I recommend Joe Bloom for inclusion in the College Scholars
Program at the University of Tennessee.

I was Joe’s instructor for multiple English classes during his four years at Morristown-
Hamblen High School, including AP English his junior year. In our classes, Joe displayed a
level of creativity, wit, and analytical thought that is quite rare among high school students.

His writing and research skills are truly phenomenal – for his major essay project in AP
English, he researched and wrote a remarkable study of visual imagery in the works of Edgar
Allan Poe.

Joe’s wide-ranging intellect is such that he would be bored by most freshman- and
sophomore-level Liberal Arts courses. He is ready to assume and excel in upper division
classwork, and possesses the self-motivation to successfully create and execute an
independent course of honors study.

Joe’s academic strengths are complemented by his demonstrated leadership skills – he was
our band’s drum major for two years and served as Vice President of the Student Council and
Editor of our high school yearbook. He is also very active in his church and in the Sierra
Student Coalition.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information to strengthen Joe’s candidacy for
the College Scholars Program.

He has a very special spark, and I trust he will go far in making our world a better place.

Sincerely,
Jane Evans

To Whom It May Concern

This letter is a strong recommendation for Ashley Pembroke, who is applying for Charles
Wallace Scholarship Program. I supervised her for three years while she worked as a Project
Officer at Providence Environmental Care. I believe that she deserves this scholarship as it
will help her pursue her dream of studying for a degree in Environmental Sciences and
Wildlife.

Ashley is one of the most brilliant project officers in our organization. Recently, she reined in
freeing the prisoned Bali dolphins through sheer will and her passion for nature conservation.
I believe that if she has a higher degree in environmental sciences and wildlife, she will be
able to contribute to the well-being of our planet and its ecology.

As a hardworking individual, Ashley has always come out on top. She is fascinated with the
smallest of wonders, which shows her strong character and is extremely easy to get along
with. To sum it up, I believe that she is a deserving candidate for the Charles Wallace
Scholarship – it will be money well-spent.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information regarding Ashley’s
suitability for the program.

Dear [recipient’s name]: or To Whom it May Concern:

It is my pleasure to recommend Jane Doe for admission to [name of program] at [name of

university]. I am a fifth-year Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley. I came
to know Jane when I was her Graduate Student Instructor for Philosophy 111: Ethical
Relativism, taught by Professor John Smith. The course comprised [short description of
course]. Jane distinguished herself by submitting an exceptionally well researched and
interesting project on ethical practices in ancient Greece. I would rank her in the top 2% of
students that I have taught in the past five years in respect of her writing ability and research
skills.

Overall, Jane is highly intelligent and has good analytical skills. Her project on ethical
practices in ancient Greece demonstrated her ability to come a detailed understanding of the
ethical practices of another, very different, culture, and to analyze the consequences of those
practices for contemporary ethical theories. She gave a particularly interesting discussion of
the difficult practice of infanticide, and showed both sensitivity and detachment when
discussing its ethical consequences. Her overall intelligence is also reflected in her grades for
the course, which were by far the best in the class.

Jane has excellent communication skills. Her written work is both clear and concise, as well
as interesting to read. She demonstrated her oral articulateness in the discussion sections that
were an integral part of the course. Each discussion section focused on a particular ethical
dilemma. Students were required analyze morally problematic situations, and to develop and
argue for their own ethical views with regard to the issue in question. Jane was highly
proficient in applying the course material in analyzing the problem situations. She always
explained her views very concisely and gave supporting arguments that were both clear and
persuasive. Jane also demonstrated good teamwork skills in group assignments.

At a personal level, Jane is a well-disciplined, industrious student with a pleasant personality.

She went well beyond the course requirements in the quantity and quality of her project,
putting in a lot of extra research and attending office hours every week. Throughout the
course, Jane demonstrated great perseverance and initiative. Not only was she interested in
and motivated to learn the material, but she also put great work into assimilating it to her own
experience and developing her own ideas about each ethical topic that we discussed.

Jane is unquestionably an exceptional candidate for graduate study in Ethics. Jane’s work in
Philosophy 111 suggests that she would greatly benefit from the opportunities for intellectual
development provided by a sustained period of graduate study. She has proven herself to
have the perseverance, initiative, and Sample letter of recommendation intellectual

creativity necessary to complete an advanced graduate degree. I would therefore highly
recommend Jane Doe. If her performance in my class is a good indication of how she would
perform as a graduate student, she would be an extremely positive asset to your program.

not hesitate to contact me.

The US-Ireland Alliance 1747
Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, 12th Floor
Washington, D.C. 20006

To the Mitchell Scholarship Selection Committee:

I am pleased to write in support of Janet Lerner’s application to receive a Mitchell

Scholarship. I know Janet well; she initially developed her thesis proposal in one of my
classes and I direct a workshop in which she is bringing that proposal to fruition with other
seniors. I am also her honors advisor in Political Science, and I selected her to serve as the
undergraduate representative to the department Undergraduate Committee, which I chair. We
talk frequently about her academic interests, career goals, travels, and many campus
responsibilities.

Janet is impressive, and growing more so each year. Her academic work is excellent: she
writes well, she offers valuable and at times exceedingly insightful comments, she is always
prepared, and on group projects she elevates the performance of those around her. But
without doubt her finest academic achievement is the honors thesis she is now writing. I
believe it will be among the best we have seen here in at least ten years, and we produce an
average of eight to ten theses a year.

Janet developed and refined her research proposal on collective identity in Northern Ireland
women’s groups in a class she took with me two years ago. No honors student that I have
worked with, let alone a sophomore, has developed a research idea and then set up the
appropriate field work with comparable skill and determination. Janet used her junior year to
do advanced graduate course work on comparative methods. She then spent the summer
conducting interviews and doing archival research. And what a trove of material she has
developed! Rich, sensitive, and theoretically revealing interviews that demonstrate her grasp
of the material and ability to connect with her subjects. I expect her thesis to make important
academic contributions to our notions of identity and its importance to politics as well as
substantive contributions to our understanding of politics in regions plagued by years of
conflict. My hope is that she will continue to mine her material and push her ideas in
advanced academic work, preferably in Europe.

But to fully appreciate Janet Lerner you need to go far beyond her intellectual abilities. She is
a force on campus and outside, but one who tends to work within rather than outside the
system. Janet is responsible, organized, articulate, exceedingly driven, and personable. Other
students defer to her judgment and arguments. I chose her to serve on my

undergraduate committee, which is engaged in an overhaul of our curriculum, for all these
reasons. But I have actually been pleasantly surprised by her work on the committee because
of the extent to which she has been such a forceful advocate for students’ interests. This is not
the easiest thing to do—to tell three professors what they should be doing. From the first day,
however, Janet demonstrated the role she would play, and we quickly came to rely upon her
as a vital participant in our deliberations.

I should note one or two other aspects of Janet’s personality and character as well, in that
they are so public and striking. First, she is aware and involved with contemporary politics, in
particular issues important to youth. Her work to promote voting among college students, her
web broadcasts of the conventions, her active support of the quality team teaching program at
the Mythic Institute for Learning, and her recent involvement with the World Business
Dialogue and World Student Summit all demonstrate, to me, that she has her finger on the
pulse of the college campus, American youth, and increasingly international youth as well.
This is an essential part of how she defines her leadership skills. Second, Janet is wonderfully
authentic. She talks about her accomplishments with joy, her failures with disappointment,
and her plans with enthusiasm. Finally, she is ambitious without seeing herself in competition
with others. In a variety of settings, I have seen her contributions to other students and the
larger community.

I believe Janet Lerner is a natural to receive a Mitchell Scholarship. She has a deep and
sincere interest in Irish politics, and her work requires that she study with scholars close to
her subject. Her plan of study strikes me as well-suited to the opportunities the Scholarship
presents. Please contact me if I can provide any additional information.

Sincerely,
John Teacher

TO THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION COMMITTEE:

I am writing you in support of the application for a Rhodes Scholarship by John Lerner, an
outstanding student with whom I have worked closely during the past two years, and for
whose intellect, imagination, and industry I have the highest admiration.

I first met John two years ago as one of thirty-seven students in my senior-level Political
Science course on Western European Government and Politics. Very early in the course he
stood out from the rest of the class because of his obvious interest in the lectures and his
intelligent and informed contributions to class discussions. He had obviously profited greatly
from an earlier stay in Germany with a German family, had learned the language well, and
had acquired perceptive insights into the complexity of the German political and economic
situation, which served him well in analyzing the rapidly developing problems of that just-
unified country.

However, I found that John’s interest in the West European situation was much broader than
Germany, for he was fascinated by the difficulties in the development of the European
community and thus chose to write his research and analysis paper on the role played by Mrs.
Thatcher in that process. His grasp of the problems that she faced domestically and that she
caused in EC negotiations was excellent; his final exam revealed impressive knowledge and
understanding of the course; and since he had perfect attendance and was always an eager
and enthusiastic participant he received an overall grade of A for the course. His was one of
only two As; I considered him to be clearly one of the two best students in that relatively
large senior-level class.

During the next academic year John did not take any course with me; however, he came
regularly to my office to discuss foreign affairs questions and to ask my views based on my
forty years of experience in the United States Foreign Service. I was impressed that he
continued such regular contact when he was no longer enrolled in one of my courses and
obviously had many other demands on his time.

At the beginning of the current Fall semester, I was very pleased that John decided to take my
senior level Political Science course on Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand Politics and
Foreign Policies, even though he did not need the course nor the credits for his requirements
and was already carrying a full load of courses. I had originally suggested that he might audit
the course; but he decided that he would learn more if he did the research and analysis paper
and took the exam—all extra workload for him. I consider this another clear indication of his
mature awareness that hard work brings great benefit in extra learning and understanding.

However, I was astounded (and delighted) by his next initiative. After I had announced to the
class of 60 students that because of budgetary stringency the Political Science Department
had decided not to name a Graduate Assistant to help me with the grading and administration
of this course, John came to my office and volunteered to act as my assistant. I
GATE Language Assistant -- your trusted language assistant
explained that there could be no compensation for this quite demanding job, and that he
would still have to complete the requirements for the research and analysis paper and the
final exam. He explained that he felt that he would gain additional valuable experience in
management and administration from working with me in this way, since he knew that I had
been organizing and teaching senior-level courses for the 12 years since I came to Mythic
University. I informed the Political Science Department of this most generous and helpful
initiative; they were as impressed and grateful for the solution as I was.

John has now submitted to me his proposal for a very important project he hopes to complete
for an advanced degree from Oxford. I consider his choice of subject to show great
imagination, foresight and understanding of one of the most complicated central issues in US
foreign policy. His idea is first to analyze the political importance of European Community
relations with the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, and then to
evaluate the intricate political-economic tensions which the current EC Common Agricultural
Policy has already caused to the vital EC relations with these non European OECD countries,
as well as to the developing countries around the world. He then proposes to project the effect
that the imposition of more efficient market economies will have on agricultural production
and trade in the fertile former Communist satellite countries of Central Europe—Poland,
Czechoslovakia, and Hungary—especially if they achieve their central goal of admission to
the EC with its artificially high agricultural prices system. Finally, he wants to extrapolate the
results that later-stage efficient market economies will have on agricultural production from
the traditional great breadbasket countries—Russia and Ukraine—and thus on the world
economic and security situation.

I think that his project is clearly set forth and understood, and that its completion will make a
major contribution to scholarly analysis of the EC/CAP problem, which has already led to
very serious strains among friends and allies in Europe, America, Japan and Australia-New
Zealand. An efficient market driven agriculture in the rich farmlands of the former
Communist countries would certainly increase these current tensions by an order of
magnitude; and I thus am most impressed by John’s perception in identifying his ideas, and
by the clarity and thoroughness with which he has organized and set forth his proposed
project.

To sum up, I support John Lerner’s application with great enthusiasm and have no
reservations at all about his ability to be an outstanding representative of the United States as
a Rhodes Scholar.

Sincerely yours,
John Teacher
Professor of Political Science.

Mr. Lalit Bipen

Director
Hyderabad Law School
Khushnuma Khairatabad
Hyderabad – 500004

Dear Mr. Bipen,

It is my honor to recommend to your school Mr. Nabhya Biswas. He was my student in her
pre-law undergraduate degree and I believe that I am in a good position to recommend him.

Mr. Biswas was a very conscientious student. He maintained excellent grades and graduated
among the top of his class. His qualities are not only in written examinations but more so in
debates and discussions in class. He was exceptional in oral examinations and always
stimulated critical intellectual discussions both inside and outside the classroom. His ability
in public speaking propelled him to become the president of the student council in his college
days. As a lawyer, I know that these qualities are important for those in the profession. I
know that Mr. Biswas will gain the knowledge and skills that he needs to be an excellent
lawyer by being a student in your esteemed school and I sincerely hope that he will be
accepted.

To the Mitchell Scholarship Selection Committee:

I am writing a letter on behalf of Ms. Rachel an international studies student at Mythic

University who is applying for the Mitchell Scholarship. To get straight to the point, Rachel
is, without a doubt, one of the strongest undergraduate students I have had the pleasure of
working at Mythic University.

I am Rachel’s co-advisor for her honors thesis and she has enrolled in several of my classes.
Most recently, Janet was the sole undergraduate student in a graduate seminar I taught titled
Qualitative Methods. Her performance was outstanding. I enjoyed watching her successfully
grapple her way through some very difficult readings in the area of social theory.
Additionally, she was a discussion leader she grounded very difficult theory which helped
alleviate some of the initial nervousness of the other students in the class. As I noted from her
discussions, she is one of those rare students who can operate at an advanced theoretical level
while keeping firmly rooted in an empirical realm.

The NIWC is a cross-community coalition that was formed in 1996 and fully participated in
the peace talks which led to the signing of the Easter Agreement. Recently, the NIWC has
found itself at the center of political debates focused on issues of gender, class, and
nationalism.

Having carefully reviewed Rachel’s data based on her NIWC case study, I can affirm that her
work is top-notch and is on par with the graduate students in the geography department. Such
a claim is no small matter. Mythic University’s Geography Department is the highest ranking
geography department in the country based on a recent report by the National Research
Council, so it is important to understand that I am comparing Rachel with some of the best
graduate students in the discipline.

Finally, Rachel has a strong understanding of political theory and strong intellectual facility.
She writes well and clearly and will complete her career at Mythic University undoubtedly to
much acclaim. She is rare and gifted scholar and has my strongest support. She really is one
in a million.

To The J.D. Smith Memorial Scholarship Committee,

It is with great pleasure that I recommend Prince Hedges, who I taught in my 11th grade math
class, for the J.D. Smith Memorial Scholarship. Prince demonstrated tremendous effort and
growth throughout the year I taught him and always brought a focused energy to class. He has
that combination of a positive attitude and the belief that he can always improve that’s rare in a
high school student, but so essential to the learning process. I am confident that he will
continue to display the same commitment and diligence in everything he does. Your
scholarship is intended for students who have had a rough start in life and who need financial
assistance to realize their academic dreams. Prince deserves to be able to go to the college of
his choosing, and this scholarship will enable him to do so.

Prince would not describe himself as a math person. He’s told me on several occasions that he
can’t get his head around a mathematical problem. I always smile when he said this, because he
ultimately always found the solution on his own with only a faint hint of which direction, he
should be thinking in. where so many others have given up, Joe maintained a high average
throughout the year. He stayed after school for extra help, got extra tutoring at the nearby
college, and asked questions in and out of class. Prince has truly demonstrated a growth
mindset, and he inspired his peers to adopt that valuable perspective, too. Prince helped
contribute to our classroom environment to be one where all students can feel supported and
able to ask questions.

Prince’s strong belief in his ability to acquire new skills and improve through practice was
likely shaped by his years as a hockey player. He’s played all through high school and is one of
the team’s most valuable players. In his final project for our class, Prince completed an
impressive statistics report on defense versus offence in NHLL teams and made a strong case
for the defense being the dominate deciding factor of every Stanley Cup winner since the year
2000. While he initially described himself as not being a math person, Prince found a way to
make the subject come alive for him in a way that he was personally invested in. as a teacher, it
is incredibly fulfilling to witness a student make this kind of academic and personal progress.

Prince is an outstanding student and individual who supports others in and out of the classroom.
He was a pleasure to have in class, and his positive attitude and belief in himself, even in the
face of difficulty, is an immensely admirable asset. I’m confident that he will continue to
demonstrate the same diligence, perseverance, and optimism that he showed myself and his
peers. I give my highest recommend for Prince to receive the J.D. Smith Memorial Scholarship.

Dear Sir/Madam

I take great pleasure in recommending Jane Smith for admission into your prestigious college.
She is an honest student who possesses excellent academic skills along with positive behavior
towards her peers and teachers. I have taught her in all her classes and seen her grown from a
bright student to the outstanding one she is today.

Living in this competitive world, students strive hard to keep pace with changing trends in
education. With increased pressures on them, they can find themselves slipping up on their
academics or losing their way out of frustration. However, Jane Smith was never one of them.
She worked hard for every bit of success that she receiver on her report card. By nature, she

I am pleased to write this letter in support of Mr. Ali who has been one of my students during
his BS(SE) degree at the Department of Computer Science, COMSATS institute of Information
Technology. I have known him since September 2013 to date.

During his stay at COMSATS, I found him one of the best students I dealt with. I have watched
him growing and seen his talents and abilities not only in the classroom but outside its walls,
when interacting with all types of people, as well. He is diligent, aggressive, and self-starter.
He has a very inquisitive mind and does not wait to be told to investigate or analyze problems;
he has the ability to recognize and initiate what needs to be done. Furthermore, he can actively
engage in numerous challenging tasks concurrently without compromising the work-quality.

One of his matchless talents is the ability to grasp technically strenuous material on his own
and come up with genuine and striking ideas. Due to his creative mind and inherent hard-
working nature, Mr. Ali is expected to achieve a genuine development in any
professional/industrial environment. I believe that Mr. Tayyub would be an excellent addition
to any institution. I hope you will also find his attributes and potential attractive and I hope that
you will favorably consider his application to your prestigious institution.

Feel free to contact the undersigned, in case of any query. Dr. Muhammad Wasif Nisar
Associate Professor / Graduate Program Coordinator Department of Computer Science

Re: Katie Kingston

Dear Ms. Jones:

I am writing this reference at the request of Katie Kingston who is applying for Student
Volunteer Program at St. Francis Hospital this summer.

I have known Katie for two years in my capacity as a teacher at Smithtown Middle School.
Katie took English and Spanish from me and earned superior grades in those classes. Based on
Katie's grades, attendance and class participation, I'd rate Katie's academic performance in my
class as superior.

Katie has a number of strengths to offer an employer. Katie is always interested in supporting
others. For example, this year when we worked on our class community service project, Katie
was helpful to me in collecting and organizing the food for the food pantry here in Smithtown.

In conclusion, I would highly recommend Katie Kingston. If her performance in my class is

any indication of how she'd perform in your position, Katie will be a positive addition to your
organization. If you should ever need any additional information you can feel free to contact
me at 555-5555 or by email at email@email.com anytime.

Sincerely,

Susan Samuels
