demonstrate induced emf.
In order to demonstrate induced emf.
Connect either end of a solenoid to a
voltmeter.
Use a magnet.
Move the magnet in and out of the

The voltmeter reading moves when the
magnet moves into the solenoid and
moves out of the solenoid.

You need to know 3 factors that will

increase the magnitude of the induced

A transformer has a primary coil with 200 turns, and a secondary coil with 2000 turns.
The input voltage is 120 VAC, and runs at 1800 Watts. What is the output voltage?

Primary Secndary
200turns 2000turns
1:10 so step up transformer
120: V V = 120 x 10 = 1200V

The power can be used to calculate the current
Power = current x voltage

P=IxV
so input current
P=IxV
1800 = 120 x i....... 1800/120 = 15A
We could also calculate output current
1800 = 1200 x i ........ i = 1800/1200 = 1.5Amps

A transformer has a primary coil with 100 coils and 35 amps,

and the secondary has 150 turns. The power in the secondary is 1.4 kW
Calculate output voltage and current.

primary secondary
100 150 so step up - voltage increases and
current decreases

Ratio Voltage 2:3
Ratio current 3:2
35Amps ? Amps
3:2 = 35: ? The current in the secondary is 2/3 of 35A
Currrent in secondary = 23.3A
To calculate
  output voltage we need to know the input voltage.
To find input voltage we use the power equation P = I x V
P = 1.4kW I = 35A Vin = ? 1400 = 35 x V V = 1400/35 = 40V
Ratio of voltage is 2:3
2:3 = 40:? Output voltage = (40/2) x 3 = 60V

In the National Grid, a step-up

transformer is used to increase the
voltage and reduce the current. The
voltage is increased from about 25,000
Volts (V) to 400,000 V causing the current
to decrease. Less current means less
energy is lost through heating the wire.
To keep people safe from these high
voltage wires, pylons are used to support
transmission lines above the ground.
Before reaching the end user, a step-
down transformer, reduces the voltage
from the transmission voltage to the safer
voltage of 230 V for home use.

32. Why are step up transformers used

before electricity is passed through the
national grid cable.
