Title: The Planet Song

Grade Level: 4/5

Source: https://teachers.net/lessons/posts/341.html

Materials needed: Scissors, different colored Construction paper, glue, and a photo
of the planets so children can create their own planets with the construction paper.
Colored pencils or markers.

Procedure:

A.S: Who knows the song Twinkle Twinkle Little Star? Who knows what our 9
planets are? What are some that we know off the top of our heads? Do we know
what they look like? What other facts do we know about them?

1. Have students divide into 9 groups. Then assign each group a planet. Have the
students cut out pieces of paper to create their assigned Planet.
2. Once finished creating the Planets, have each group join other students to make
a circle in the room.
3. Have each group of students show the rest of the class their assigned planet
while saying its name aloud. (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto)
4. “Everyone knows the tune to “ twinkle twinkle little star, right?” Let us sing that
aloud quick to make sure we got it down!’
5. Make sure everyone knows it and repeat it if necessary.

6. Review the Planets as many times as needed until they are memorized. Have the
students lift their assigned planet when the planet gets called out.
7. If they are having trouble remembering the names of the planets. Have them
slowly do one planet name at a time while singing the song, and then slowly add in
more.
Ex: If you sing this song with me
The nine planets you will meet,
Mercury

(repeat)

Sing this song to all your friends

Closure: How many Planets did we name off? Are they all the same color? Size?
What is everyone's favorite planet? How exciting that we all learned about the
solar system today!

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned that “twinkle
twinkle” is a melody song with a simple rhythmic pattern that they can use and apply to learn
how to memorize 9 Planets in our solar system. They will know they are all different shapes,
sizes, and colors.
