Insert briefly of what you learnt in this month pertaining to navigation and/or
your port stay pertaining to Cargo / Tanker operation

1. LIFEBOAT RECOVERY :

 Witnessed lifeboat lowering and hooks release.

 Assisted in the recovery of lifeboat from water
 Learnt the procedure for securing the boat back on the hook.

Cadet’s Monthly Report
RECOVERY PROCEDURE:

o Connect the suspension links of the boat falls simultaneously to both fore
and aft hook.
o Rotate both hooks back in upright position. (During this operation, the
release handle shall be in released position.)
o Turn the wheel clockwise on both hooks until it stops.
o Push release handle back in locked position. The padlock symbol on both
hooks shall then go into locked position.
o Insert release handle safety pin.
o Hoist the lifeboat just clear of the water and stop hoisting.
o Confirm that the fore and aft hooks are properly connected and the padlock
symbol on both hooks is in locked position.
o Confirm that the lifeboat symbol has moved above the water surface
symbol. Position for the lifeboat not being waterborne.
o Hoist the lifeboat to stowed position.

TASK COMPLETED THIS MONTH:

1. PORTABLE MULTIGAS METER:

 Portable Gas meters are provided on board for detection of gases in confined
spaces for enclosed space entry or for cargo purpose

 WORKING PRINCIPLE

 HC DETECTION
 The gas meter provided uses Infrared detection .the vapour to be
detected reaches the chamber by suction through the pump. Infrared
radiation from the light source, shines through a window into the
chamber and is reflected and focussed by a spherical mirror, and then
passes through another window and hits the beam splitter. The portion
of the radiation which passes through the beam splitter passes through
a measuring filter into the housing cover of the measuring detector
and is converted into electric signal.
 A portion of the radiation by the beam splitter passes through the
reference filter to reach reference detector.
 If the gas mixture contains hydrocarbons, a part of the radiation is
absorbed in the wavelength range of the measurement filter and a
reduced electric signal is given.
 Gas concentration is determined by comparing values on
measurement detector and reference detector.

Cadet’s Monthly Report

 O2 AND H2S DETECTION

 The gas meter provided uses Galvanic cell.
 The gas is dissolved via the diaphragm in an electrolytic solution in
which an anode and cathode are adjacent to each other. A current
proportional to the quantity of gas dissolved is generated. The amount
of gas passing through the diaphragm is proportional to the partial gas
pressure of the sample gas; therefore the gas concentration can be
determined by measuring the current.

2. BWTS:

 Working Principle.

 During ballasting, water is drawn from the sea chest using the vessels
BW pump(s).The water passes through an in-lined self-cleaning screen
filter in order to remove larger particles and organisms. Filter cleaning
is applied automatically when the pressure differential between clean
and dirty side reaches a default set-point.
 The pressure differential between clean side and the back-flush line is
utilised and allows reverse flushing of clean water through the dirty
screen. Dirty water containing filtered debris is evacuated through a
back-flush line and discharged to sea.
 The discharge is driven by a sludge pump to overcome any pressure
losses in the back-flush line. Filter cleaning does not interrupt
operations but may marginally impact pressure and flow whilst
undertaken.
 A small portion of the BW flow (~1%) is pumped through a separate
filter and into the disinfectant unit (C2E). The C2E feed water can be
drawn from the sea chest/ BW intake, from the aft peak tank (APT) or
some other dedicated tank.
 In the C2E, a controlled amount of concentrated oxidants (anolyte) is
produced by seawater electrolysis. The generated oxidant solution is
injected into the main BW line after the main filter(s) through a diffuser
quill by means of a variable speed pump.
 After injection of the oxidant solution, the resulting oxidant level is
continuously monitored to ensure correct dosage. This is done
according to a defined algorithm taking into account the oxidant
consumption of the water to be treated and the salinity.
 The calculated required TRO level is achieved by either changing the
power supplied to the C2E (change oxidant production) or by changing
the BW flow (altering the dilution rate).
