_____________________________________________________________________________
Good day and welcome, everyone! Thank you for joining us for today’s online webinar. My
name is TRICIA CUEVO, a 2nd yr student nurse at College of the Immaculate Conception.
Today we are presenting “_______”, and our initial topic is “The World of Science, Technology
and Society”. Are you all guys excited for our topic? OK GOOD.
Now let’s begin this program with a prayer to be led by Ms. Tricia Cuevo. to be followed by
the singing of the National Anthem headed by Mr. Kim Aldie Gomez.
[Prayer and National Anthem]
Thank you Ms. Cuevo and Mr. Gomez. To give us the opening remarks for this program, may I
now call on Ms. Elleine Earielle Rejano.
ELLEINE: Thank you, Miss Tricia. Hello to all of you! I kindly ask that you keep an open mind
and that you'll learn a lot throughout this webinar because we'll be discussing STS, which is
now the most prominent topic.
The period in which we live has been molded by the widespread use of technology in virtually
every element of modern man's life. I therefore hope you will learn a few things from us and
put them to use in your daily life.
[OPENING PRAYER]
Wonderful Ms. Rejano! Just a little housekeeping before we get started. If you have any
questions during the presentation, please type them into the chatbox. I’ll bring them up
during the presentation and we will also have time for questions at the end.
Now without further ado, we will turn the time over to our speakers. Our presenters for
today are our very own teachers in our beloved institution. Again, she will be presenting
about The World of Science, Technology and Society. Let us all welcome, Ms. Elleine Earielle
Rejano.

[PRESENTATION]
<ELLEINE>
OBJECTIVES:
• To demonstrate knowledge of the interrelationship between science, technology, and
society;
• To describe the effects of science and technology on society, particularly in the Philippines;
• To discuss the implications of science and technology on society and the environment.
• To understand the significance of science and technology in environmental preservation
and the growth of the Filipino nation;
• To present science and technology's importance and contributions to society in a
constructive way.
INTRODUCTION:
Science and technology studies (STS) is the study of how society, politics, and culture drive
scientific research and technological innovation, as well as how these, in turn, influence
society, politics, and culture.

Society is a large group of people who live together in an organized way,

making decisions about how to do things and sharing the work that needs to be done.
Some authors define Society like -
Linton: Any group of people who have lived and worked together long enough to get
themselves organized and to think of themselves as a social unit with well defined limits".
A.W. Green: It is the largest group in which individual have relationships.
Maclver: It is a web of social relationship, which is always changing.
Adam Smith: Society is an artificial device of Natural economy.

SPECIFIC:

 Science is the methodical observation and study of the natural world in order to gain
information about it. As a result, we build new technologies through science.
 Technology is the actual application of scientifically acquired knowledge. Because
technological and scientific revolutions underpin economic advancements,
improvements in health systems, education, and infrastructure, scientists use
technology in all of their experiments, changing the way people live, connect,
communicate, and transact, with profound effects on economic development.

- Let’s say the S&T is one of the engines of growth of the society.
- Here are some of the products of STS that contributed to the growth and enhancement
of the human lives.
- [end of introduction]
ELLEINE: Thank you. For discussing Importance of inventions and contributions to
science, technology and society may I call on Ms. Tricia Cuevo.

TRICIA: Thank you.

IMPORTANCE <TRICIA>

Importance of inventions and contributions to science, technology and society

GREEK CONTRIBUTIONS
ALARM CLOCK
The purpose was just to tell an individual when to stop or when to start, they made use of
water (or small stones or sand) that dropped into drums which sounded the alarm clock to
signal the start of their lectures.
This sound was set to occur at specific time intervals, and could be used to wake people up or
remind them of important events throughout the day.
ROMAN CONTRIBUTIONS
ROMAN ARCHITECTURE
Architecture was crucial to the success of Rome. Both formal architecture like temples and
basilicas and in its utilitarian buildings like bridges and aqueducts played important roles in
unifying the empire. The construction of a roads with bridges helped communication across
the far-flung empire. Roman structures serve as an inspiration for construction of other
nations' stunning infrastructure
MEDIEVAL AGE
PRINTING PRESS
Its immediate effect was that it spread information quickly and accurately. This helped create
a wider literate reading public. However, its importance lay not just in how it spread
information and opinions, but also in what sorts of information and opinions it was
spreading.
After the printing press, published works could circulate more easily within the scientific
community with fewer errors. This allowed for an easier exchange of ideas and discoveries
between scientists of geographical and time constraints.

CHINESE CONTRIBUTIONS
SILK
Silk is a fabric first produced in Neolithic China from the filaments of the cocoon of the silk
worm. It became a staple source of income for small farmers and, as weaving techniques
improved, the reputation of Chinese silk spread so that it became highly desired across the
empires of the ancient world. As China's most important export for much of its history, the
material gave its name to the great trading network the Silk Road, which connected East Asia
to Europe, India, and Africa. Not only used to make fine clothes, silk was used for fans, wall
hangings, banners, and as a popular alternative to paper for writers and artists even today.

MODERN TIMES
TELEPHONE
An instrument designed for the simultaneous transmission and reception of the human voice.
The telephone is inexpensive, is simple to operate, and offers its users an immediate,
personal type of communication that cannot be obtained through any other medium.
As a result, it has become the most widely used telecommunications device in the world.
Billions of telephones are in use around the world.
The telephone is one invention that changed the world and opened a wide world of
communication. Many businesses benefited from the additional communication options that
became available after the invention of the telephone.
Importance (maybe you can summarize to not exceed the limit of our presentation)

 The essence of how science and technology contributes to society is the creation of
new knowledge, and then utilization of that knowledge to boost the prosperity of
human lives, and to solve the various issues facing society.
 It prepares them for careers in business, law, government, journalism, research, and
education, and it provides a foundation for citizenship in a globalizing, diversifying
world with rapid technological and scientific change.
 Science has made great contributions to health by providing treatment for various
chronic diseases. Technology devices have improved the care of many patients and
helped to record patients' real-time data and instantly update their medical history
and make their recovery less distressing and painful.
(We benefit from technology in receiving these treatments through various methods
and tools such as x-rays, SC scans, MRIs, surgical instruments, pacemakers, and much
more. We also enjoy many different exercise equipment and health applications, and
other things that help us maintain a healthy and good life.)
POSITIVE <TRICIA> AND NEGATIVE IMPACTS <KIM>

_______________________________<TRICIA>________________________________
Yes, technology is a need in today's society, but it also poses a serious threat owing to its
negative consequences. Let us discuss the positive and unfavorable effects of information
technology on our society in detail.
Positive Impacts of Science and Technology on Society
 Technology has improved Agriculture
Technology has mechanized agriculture: Modern agricultural technology allows a small
number of people to grow vast quantities of food in a short period of time with less
input which results into high yields and RIO ”return on investment”. Through
government subsidies, small and medium-sized farmers have managed to acquire
plowing, sowing, watering and harvesting machines
 Technology has improved transportation in a society
Transportation is one of the basic areas of technological activity. Both society and businesses
have profited from the new transpiration methods. Transportation provides mobility for people
and goods. Transportation uses vehicles, trains, airplanes, motorbikes, people, roads, energy,
information, materials, finance and time. All these parts I have mentioned work together to
move and relocate people and goods. Technology has helped in advancing all the four types of
transportation including

1. Road transport used by automobiles,

2. Air transport which is used by airplanes
3. Water transportation which is used by ships and speed boats and
4. Space transportation used to go to the moon.

 Technology has improved business, trade, and industry in a society

Doing business has become so much faster, even when the seller and buyer sit on opposite
ends of the world, and their transactions are finalized, electronically, within moments. More
products and services are available to clients. Calculations are much more accurate today
than before and this minimizes the possibility of errors.

 Technology has improved medicine

The skills and dedication of medical professionals, paired with the newest, latest technology
can only mean better to the very best in treatment. Advanced research and modern
technology also make it a lot easier to diagnose and treat illnesses. Even illnesses like cancer
and heart disease.

 Technology has improved family ways

Technology brings families closer even when they live far apart. Technology can never take
the place of real kisses and hugs, but it can enable loved ones to see each other and speak
to each other, even when they live on different continents. Family can stay connected, give
support and share love even when separated by thousands of miles.

 Technology has improved communication

Communication is used for a number of purposes. Both society and organizations depend
on communication to transfer information.  People use technology to interconnect with
each other. Electronic media like radios, televisions, internet, and social media have
improved the way we exchange ideas which can develop our societies.
 Technology has improved education and learning process
Education is the backbone of every economy. People need well and organized educational
arrangements so that they can learn how to understand information. Many schools have
started integrating educational technologies in their schools with a great aim of improving
the way students learn.
Technologies like smart whiteboards, computers, mobile phones, iPads, projectors,
and internet are being used in classrooms to boost students moral to learn.

Of course! There will be cons. The negative consequences of technology on society are the
outcome of poor and ineffective use of technology, which can have an impact on society's
health and security values.

_______KUYA KIMMMMM__________
Negative Impacts of Science and Technology on Society
 Resource Depletion
Advancement is increasing the demand of the new technology day by day. Total number of
mobile phones and computers being manufactured today is amazing, our population is
increasing every day and all these billion consumers demand either a mobile phone or a
computer in their homes or offices. Likewise, the intensive farming practices will deplete
the soil. This makes heavy applications of commercial fertilizers necessary to yield healthy
harvests, but also these fertilizers have chemicals which are dangerous to the soil and
human lives.

 Increased Population
Technology has helped us live longer by improving health facilities and aiding in the
research for solutions for most health problems which affect humans. This is good news for
developed countries but is bad news for developing countries which have not been in a
position to access these health care benefits brought by technology.
In developed countries population growth is controlled by advanced birth control methods, this
has helped them balance their population in relation to natural resources and other
opportunities which come with a planned population. This is different in developing countries,
the rate at which people produce is very high, the mortality rate is high, food is scarce and
health care is poor.

 Increased Pollution
Pollution affects the land we grow crops on, the water we drink and the air we breathe. The
increased demand for new technologies and advancement of technologies has resulted in many
manufacturing and processing factories. As they work so hard to create the best technologies
for both society and business, they release harmful chemicals and gasses which have polluted
our environment and this has resulted in climate changes (global warming). So the more
technology we enjoy, the more we harm our environment.
 Increased bullying in society
The use of modern technology has caused a huge increase in bullying. Children aren’t able to
escape their bullies because they infiltrate the security of their victims’ homes through online
avenues. The serious increase in cyber-bullying has resulted in an increase in teen suicides.
 The lack of social bonds among individuals
Interviews, starting from one for an internship to big job firms are also conducted online and it
is true that this does add to our convenience. Also, there have been rising number of
relationships that grew over social media and many relationships that exist via the same.
These social networking sites have created a virtual world where the users have grown
complacent and this slices down their need to meet someone face-to-face or have social bonds
with others in the actual world. It’s like a virtual world within the actual where each individual
has been reduced to his own singular world.
Thus everything gets shrunk to a screen and most of us fail to acquire the social skills for good
communication and interaction.

 Technology is architecting warfare

The rapidly increasing use of technology in wars is making society harmful for the people to live
in. Destructive weapons developed in the last few decades have increased the severity of wars.
Thousands of different kinds of modern destructive weapons developed through technological
advancements. Weapons like atomic bombs are a threat to human civilization that can wipe out
life on earth.

THANK YOU MS, CUEVO AND MR. GOMEZ FOR YOUR COMPREHENSIVE DISCUSSION OF ITS
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS TO THE SOCIETY. NOW FOR THE CONCLUDING PART, MAY I
CALL ON AGAIN MS. REJANO.
CONCLUSION <ELLEINE>
Conclusion:
Science and technology have given us many things, but they have also caused many problems in
society. The negative consequences describe this. Science and technology make a significant
contribution to the advancement of our civilization, but what if we don't gain from it? It may
cause us problems. Whether we praise or condemn science and technology, society today
cannot progress without them.
Our society is being shaped by technology. It has the potential to improve our lives while also
posing a threat. The outcomes are consistent with how we're using it. Our actions determine
whether technology is beneficial or harmful.
So people, keep in mind that we must take responsibility for how and to what extent we use
science and technology.
