INTRODUCTION
Science and technology have always been
intertwined with society. The development
of new technologies has always been driven
by the needs and wants of society, and in
turn, the advancement of science has
helped to shape our world. From early tools
and weapons to modern transportation and
communication, science and technology
have played a vital role in human progress.

ABOUT STS
As we continue to live in an increasingly interconnected world, the
impact of science and technology on society is only going to grow.
With the rapid pace of technological change, it can be difficult to
predict how exactly science and technology will impact our lives in the
future. However, there are some general trends that we can already
see emerging. One trend that is becoming more apparent is the way
that technology is changing the way we interact with each other and
our environment. For example, we are now able to communicate with
people all over the world through social media and other online
platforms. We can also use technology to help us monitor and protect
our environment, such as by using satellite imagery to track
deforestation or pollution levels.

ACTIVITY 1
1. Explain how our past had influenced the
Information Age.

The information age influenced the past in terms of accessing the information of
different sectors. I think information is somehow a disadvantage and advantage to
some because these kinds of difficulties are coming our way at an alarming rate in the
Information Age and will keep doing so. These difficulties will only become more
challenging due to the environment's growing complexity and the actions required to
preserve or enhance our equilibrium. Three things are necessary to successfully meet
these problems. We must first acknowledge that something has changed. Second, we
must comprehend the effects of this transformation. Third, we must create prompt and
efficient responses
Page 3.2

ACTIVITY 1
2. Aside from communication, what other aspects of society
are/ are being influenced in the information age?

Credibility. Nowadays, people frequently offer uninvited, false information that they
refer to as "facts," particularly in regards to psychotherapy, mental diseases, trauma
responses, and the like. Tiktok, a social networking site, is one prominent example of
how these folks are using it to spread the news. Not only do the majority of them lack
degrees or doctorates, but they are also just regular people who utilize these subjects
as discussion topics while filming themselves and pose as "experts" in order to gain
attention or "clout". With a huge increase in followers, anyone may now work as a
therapist, doctor, or neuroscientist from the convenience of their smartphones.
Nowadays, credibility is a joke.
Page 3.3

ACTIVITY 1
3. Cite three inventions in the Information Age and explain
how these contribute to global development.

The three inventions that the information age produced were Television, telephone and
the internet. Television is something we can call the center of information in all sectors
in the world. It was made for us to know what is happening in our world on a daily
basis. Aside from that it was also made for entertainment, for us to enjoy information.
Second is the telephone, this invention was made for us to communicate in different
parts of the world. It is useful for us to deliver our messages up to this day. Telephone is
something we can call now “ part of our life” because we can’t live without it. Lastly,
the internet. The internet was made for us to secure data, send data or messages,
explore websites or even entertainment. The Internet is all in one. We can send
messages, watch sometimes, read articles and news. It has something to do with
globalization, which is the productive and technological advancement.

REFLECTION ABOUT N
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Page 7.1

1. I HAVE LONG REALIZED THAT THE BIG ADVANCES IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COME
NOT FROM THE WORK OF COMPUTER SCIENTISTS, COMPUTER ARCHITECTS, OR ELECTRICAL
ENGINEERS, BUT FROM THAT OF PHYSICAL SCIENTISTS.

THE MAJOR ADVANCEMENTS IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AREN'T THE RESULT OF THE LABOR OF
COMPUTER SCIENTISTS, COMPUTER ARCHITECTS, OR ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS, BUT RATHER OF PHYSICAL
SCIENTISTS, SINCE THEY ARE THE ONES WHO CARRY OUT EXPERIMENTS, ARRIVE AT CONCLUSIONS, AND SO
ON. IT MAY HAVE AN IMPACT ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MEASURES AND ENDEAVORS BECAUSE THEY
STRESS THE VALUE OF STUDYING SCIENTIFIC PROCEDURES AND DRAWING CONCLUSIONS. PHYSICAL
SCIENTISTS SPEND MOST OF THEIR TIME IN A LAB CONDUCTING EXPERIMENTS OR MAKING OBSERVATIONS,
ANALYZING THE RESULTS, USING THE RELEVANT TOOLS, AND CREATING AND TESTING THEORIES. PHYSICAL
SCIENTISTS ARE EXPERTS IN FIELDS LIKE PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY, ASTRONOMY, AND GEOLOGY THAT DO NOT
DEAL WITH LIVING THINGS. THEY OPERATE IN TEAMS WITH ENGINEERS AND SCIENTISTS FROM VARIOUS
FIELDS AND MAY WORK IN ACADEMIC SETTINGS, THE PRIVATE SECTOR, OR FOR RESEARCH ORGANIZATIONS.
INSTEAD, THEY CONCENTRATE ON PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES AND ENERGY.

2. GEORGE DYSON WARNS: "IN THE GAME OF LIFE AND EVOLUTION THERE ARE THREE
PLAYERS AT THE TABLE: HUMAN BEINGS, NATURE, AND MACHINES. I AM FIRMLY ON THE
SIDE OF NATURE. BUT NATURE, I SUSPECT, IS ON THE SIDE OF THE MACHINES."

MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT EVOLUTION TARGETS MEMBERS OF A SPECIES WITH "INFERIOR" FEATURES IN ORDER TO
DECREASE THEIR CHANCES OF SURVIVAL AND OVERALL GENE POOL CONTRIBUTION. WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE, YOU
MIGHT THEN POINT TO OUR CURRENT LONGEVITY AND SAY THAT "HUMANS HAVE BASICALLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM OF
SURVIVABILITY"—WHICH WE HAVE. WE CAN TREAT VISION IMPAIRMENT, MAKE UP FOR LONG-TERM ILLNESSES,
VACCINATE AGAINST PLAGUES, OVERCOME INFERTILITY, ETC. HOWEVER, THIS KNOWLEDGE IS BASED ON A LIMITED
UNDERSTANDING OF EVOLUTION. BECAUSE WE ARE NOTORIOUS FOR DESTROYING THE ENVIRONMENT, OUR
PROSPERITY COMPETES WITH THE COST TO THE ENVIRONMENT. MACHINES ARE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCES, OR AIS.
WHEN DEVELOPED ENOUGH, THEY MIGHT ALSO ENGAGE IN CONFLICT WITH THE NATURAL WORLD AS WELL AS WITH
US.HE IMPLIES THAT PEOPLE SHOULD REFRAIN FROM HURTING THE ECOLOGY WHEN HE CLAIMS TO BE ON THE SIDE OF
NATURE. HE IS IMPLYING THAT MACHINES HAVE INHERENT ADVANTAGES THAT WILL CAUSE THEM TO DOMINATE
WHEN HE CLAIMS THAT NATURE IS ON THEIR SIDE. HE DOESN'T IMPLY THAT ALL ANIMALS WILL TURN ON THE ROBOTS
AND BECOME THEIR SUPPORTERS, BUT RATHER THAT THE MACHINES WILL BENEFIT FROM NATURAL SELECTION. IN
ESSENCE, HE IS WARNING US NOT TO HARM THE ENVIRONMENT AND NOT TO USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Page 7.1

3. THE DREAM OF ROBOTICS IS, FIRST, THAT INTELLIGENT MACHINES CAN DO OUR WORK
FOR US, ALLOWING US LIVES OF LEISURE, RESTORING US TO EDEN… AND SECOND, THAT WE
WILL GRADUALLY REPLACE OURSELVES WITH OUR ROBOTIC TECHNOLOGY, ACHIEVING NEAR
IMMORTALITY BY DOWNLOADING OUR CONSCIOUSNESSES.
THEY HAVE BEEN ALTERING OUR LIVES FOR YEARS IN A VARIETY OF WAYS. WE HAVE UNQUESTIONINGLY
BELIEVED THAT MACHINES CAN BE TRUSTED TO COMPLETE TASKS FOR US SINCE YOU FIRST SAW A
TOASTER POP UP ON THEIR OWN. THEY RUN OUR AUTOMOBILES, PLAY OUR MUSIC, COOK OUR FOOD, AND
RECORD OUR SHOWS. BECAUSE THESE "ROBOTS" LACK A FACE OR A BUTT WE CAN KICK, WE JUST DON'T
NOTICE IT. ROBOTS ARE TECHNICALLY AUTOMATIC MOTORIZED TOOLS, BUT THEY'RE MORE WELL
RECOGNIZED AS CLUMSY HUMANOID FOILS THAT HAVE BUBBLED THROUGH POPULAR MEDIA FOR ALMOST A
CENTURY. THESE MECHANIZED FIGURES OF HUMOR OR THREAT WITHOUT STATUS MAKE THEIR VIOLENT
REMOVAL A MINOR PLOT WITH NO MORAL CONSEQUENCES. SAD, REALLY. MANY DISCRIMINATORY VIDEO
GAMES AND MOVIES, NOT TO MENTION THE UNMET PROMISES OF THE 20TH CENTURY, HAVE GIVEN MOBILE
ROBOTS A BAD NAME. WHY ARE THESE SCIENTISTS TAKING SO LONG? WHY CAN'T I JUST BUY A ROBOT TO DO
MY WORK WHILE I WATCH TV IF ROBOTS ARE COMING? AFTER SPENDING A LIFETIME MAKING ROBOTS THE
OLD "SERIOUS" WAY

BIODIVERSITY
1. Define biodiversity and give three types of
biodiversity essential in preserving ecological
systems and functions.
2. How do humans benefit from biodiversity?
3. How can technology help raise awareness
of biodiversity issues in the community?

4. Who or what do you think is the biggest

enemy of Mother Earth and why?

5. What else can you do to help the

environment and the conservation and
preservation of our biodiversity?
Page 8.1

1. DEFINE BIODIVERSITY AND GIVE THREE TYPES OF BIODIVERSITY ESSENTIAL IN

PRESERVING ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS AND FUNCTIONS.

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth. It includes all plants, animals, and
microorganisms, as well as the genes they contain. Three types of biodiversity
essential in preserving ecological systems and functions are:
1. Genetic diversity: This is the variety of genes within a species. It ensures that
populations can adapt to changing environmental conditions.
2. Species diversity: This is the variety of different species living in an area. A
high level of species diversity helps ecosystems to function more effectively and
resist disturbances such as disease outbreaks or natural disasters. 3. Ecosystem
diversity: This is the variety of different ecosystems on Earth( e. such as forests,
grasslands, deserts, and oceans. Each one has its own unique combination of
plants, animals, and microorganisms. This diversity is essential for the health of
our planet.)
Page 8.2

2. HOW DO HUMANS BENEFIT FROM BIODIVERSITY?

Humans benefit from biodiversity in many ways. For example, we rely on

plants and animals for food, shelter, clothing, and medicine. Biodiversity
also helps to regulate the Earth's climate and provides us with clean air and
water. In other words, biodiversity is essential for our survival.

3. HOW CAN TECHNOLOGY HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF BIODIVERSITY ISSUES IN THE

COMMUNITY?

Technology can help raise awareness of biodiversity issues in the community

by providing information about local ecosystems and the animals and plants
that live there. It can also help connect people with others who are interested
in conservation. For example, there are many online forums and social media
groups dedicated to discussing ways to protect biodiversity.
Page 8.3

4. WHO OR WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST ENEMY OF MOTHER EARTH AND
WHY?

Humans are the biggest enemy of earth because we contribute to all of the
major threats to the planet's biodiversity. We cause habitat loss through
activities such as deforestation and urbanization. We also contribute to
climate change by emitting greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.
Additionally, we pollute our waterways with toxic chemicals and introduce
invasive species into new habitats. All of these actions have negative
consequences for plant and animal populations around the world.
Page 8.4

5. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE CONSERVATION
AND PRESERVATION OF OUR BIODIVERSITY?

There are many things that people can do to help the environment and the
conservation and preservation of our biodiversity. Some things include
reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, recycling, and avoiding single-use
plastics. We can also support organizations that are working to protect
endangered species and habitats. There are many reasons why it is important
to help the environment and the conservation and preservation of our
biodiversity. For one, humans rely on healthy ecosystems for our own
survival. Additionally, biodiversity provides essential ecosystem services that
help us maintain a livable planet. Biodiversity also helps ensure that future
generations will have the resources they need to thrive. Finally, protecting
biodiversity is simply the right thing to do – it is an ethical imperative that we
steward these Earth’s resources responsibly

nanotechnology?

People in the past engaged in nanotechnology by creating and manipulating

materials at the atomic or molecular level.

Identify three (3) nanotechnology applications and state what serious and
relevant society problems or issues does each address.

1. Electronics nanotechnology applications include creating smaller and more efficient

transistors, developing new data storage devices, and creating solar cells that are
more efficient at converting sunlight into electricity.
2. Energy nanotechnology can be used to create more efficient solar cells, which
could help address the issue of energy insecurity. Nanotechnology can also be used
to create stronger and lighter materials, which could help reduce the weight of
vehicles and thus their fuel consumption.
3. Biomedicine nanotechnology applications include creating artificial blood cells,
developing new drug delivery systems, and creating self-assembling tissues.
Page 9.2 What is so special about nanotechnology?

One of the things that makes nanotechnology so special is its ability to create
materials and devices that have never before been possible. Nanotechnology also has
the potential to solve some of the world's most pressing problems, such as climate
change, energy insecurity, and disease.

Are nanotechnology products available today?

There are already a number of nanotechnology products available on

the market today, including self-cleaning coatings for surfaces, stain-
resistant fabrics, and sunscreen that contains nanoparticles. In the
future, it is expected that nanotechnology will be used to create even
more advanced products, such as artificial blood cells and drug delivery
systems.
Page 9.1 Are there any specific health or other risks from
nanoproducts?

Some people have raised concerns about the potential health risks of
nanoparticles, but there is currently no evidence that nanoparticles are
harmful to human health.

What is the future of nanotechnology?

The future of nanotechnology is very exciting. researchers are

continuing to explore new ways to use nanoparticles to create
innovative products and solve pressing problems.
Page 9.3 How can nanotechnology address problems in the
Philippines?

Nanotechnology can address a number of problems in the Philippines, such as climate

change, energy insecurity, and disease. One way that nanotechnology can help solve
these problems is by creating new and improved products, such as self-cleaning coatings
for surfaces or artificial blood cells. Nanotechnology can also be used to develop more
efficient methods of delivering drugs to patients or producing clean energy.

How do nanotechnology help the development of the Philippine nation?

There is a lot of potential for nanotechnology to help the development of the

Philippines. For example, nanotechnology can be used to create more efficient
methods of producing clean energy or delivering drugs to patients. Nanotechnology
can also be used to develop new and improved products, such as self-cleaning coatings
for surfaces or artificial blood cells. By helping solve some of the country's most
pressing problems, nanotechnology can play a role in making the Philippines a more
prosperous and developed nation.
Page 9.4

Can nanotechnology be applied in a developing nation? Does

nanotechnology have the potential to end poverty?

Yes, nanotechnology can be applied in a developing nation. In fact, some experts believe
that nanotechnology has the potential to help end poverty. One way that nanotechnology
can do this is by helping to develop new and improved products that are more affordable
and accessible to everyone. Nanotechnology can also help make existing products more
efficient and reduce waste. By making essential goods and services more affordable and
available, nanotechnology has the potential to help improve the standard of living for
people in developing nations.

GENE THERAPY
1. What is gene therapy?

2. What are the forms of

gene therapy?

3. List at least three

advantages of gene
therapy.

4. Explain and answer

the five ethical issues
about gene therapy.
Page 10.1

1. What is gene therapy?

Gene therapy is a technique that uses genes to treat or

prevent disease. In its simplest form, gene therapy replaces a
faulty gene with a working copy of the gene.
This approach has been effective in treating certain diseases,
such as cancer and genetic disorders. However, challenges
remain, including developing safe and efficient delivery
methods and ensuring that the therapeutic gene integrates
into the patient's genome.
Page 10.2

2. What are the forms of gene therapy?

There are two main types of gene therapy: somatic cell gene
therapy and germline gene therapy.
Somatic cell gene therapy involves manipulating the genes
of cells in the body that have already differentiated into their
specific roles. For example, this type of gene therapy could
be used to change the genes of blood cells to make them
resistant to HIV.
Germline gene therapy, on the other hand, manipulates the
genes in eggs, sperm or embryonic cells. This means that any
changes made would be passed down to future generations.
Germline gene therapy is currently not being used in
humans due to ethical concerns.
Page 10.3

3. List at least three advantages of gene therapy.

1. Gene therapy can be used to treat a wide range of

diseases, including cancer and genetic disorders.
2. It has the potential to be more effective than
traditional treatments, such as drugs or surgery.
3. It is a relatively new field, so there is still much
potential for improvement and development.
Page 10.4

4. Explain and answer the five ethical issues about gene therapy.

1. One of the ethical issues surrounding gene therapy is the

potential for abuse. For example, gene therapy could be used to
create "designer babies" with specific physical or intellectual traits.
2. Another concern is that gene therapy may not be equally
accessible to everyone. It is possible that only wealthy individuals
would be able to afford this type of treatment, which could further
widen the gap between rich and poor.
3. There are also questions about whether or not gene therapy is
safe. Since it is a relatively new field, there is still much unknown
about the long-term effects of gene therapy on humans.
4. Additionally, there is worry that genetic alterations made
through gene therapy could be passed down to future
5. Some people also believe that gene therapy could be used to
create "superhumans" who would have an unfair advantage over
the rest of humanity.
