Situation :An Indian couple whose husband aged 80 and his wife 72 yearold
delivered a healthy normal child

Direction: Using and following scientific method, how did this couple bear a child?

Answer: They applied or used the IVF which means In Vitro Fertilization that’s why the
couple bear a child from the age of 80 and 72. After the failed process they got
successfully pregnant on the third trial. Because in IVF or In Vitro Fertilization
thewoman’s eggfertilized with a man's sperm outside the body.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the joining of a woman's egg and a man's sperm in
alaboratory dish. In vitro means outside the body. Fertilization means the sperm has
attached to and entered the egg.

Brainstorming. Determine the possible alternatives to growth and development. List down
several ways to promote sustainable living and start a mini-campaign advocating the methods of
your choice.

It all start from ourselves to be a responsible person on earth. Several ways to promote a
sustainable living.
1. Proper throwing of garbage, we all know that plastic may kills our environment, so by simple
putting your garbage in a trashbags or in a properplace it has a big impact to lessen the
garbage anywhere. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
2. Planting more tree has a big contribution like produce fresh air, prevent flooding and
landslides.
3. Be a member of community garden, planting vegetables in your backyard.
4. Start using natural than chemical.
5. Start reading books and playing outdoors activities. Mostly children nowadays are addicted
to gadgets, social media eyes are more exposed to brightness by doing outdoor activities
youvbecome physical and mentality healthy.
6. Donate unused itemsbto the mostly needed.
7. Take shorter showers , shut off water during brushing, add a brick to your toilet tank.
8. Be a volunteer and cooperate in the activities of your community.

State the contributions of the following terms below in the scientific development.

1. Telescope - These instruments helped us make the first valid measurement of the speed of
light. Telescopes have also helped us understand gravity and other fundamental laws of the
physical world. Telescopes have also helped us understand the light that radiates from the
sun and other stars.

2. Radio - Radio technology is a useful channel through which people communicate. Messages
sent through invisible airwaves inform, persuade and entertain. Radio connects individuals
across geographical, cultural, and even political divides.

3. Microscope - The microscope is a device that magnifies objects or organisms that are too
small to see with the naked eye. A milestone in the science world, the microscope has had
enormous influence on the development of modern medical, forensics and environmental
science. The invention of the microscope has revolutionized the science industry while
developing other fields.

4. Cellphones - Cell phones have become a necessity for many people throughout the world.
The ability to keep in touch with family, business associates, and access to email are only a
few of the reasons for the increasing importance of cell phones. Today's technically
advanced cellphones are capable of not only receiving andplacing phone calls, but storing
data, taking pictures, and can even be used as talkies, to name just a few of the available
options.

5. Processed food - Food processing is the alteration of foods from the state in which they are
harvested or raised to better preserve them and feed consumers. As the 2007 World Food
Prize Laureate Philip E Nelson said, “If you teach a person how to process food, you can feed
a village.”Food processing was probably the first “technology” that was sufficiently
successful such that it led to a segregation of societies into discrete artisan industries.

6. Internet- Internet use can improve learners’ academic performance, promote research skills
and critical thinking, encourage independent or collaborative learning, enhance motivation,
strengthen self-confidence and improve the teaching methods. Much as their as limitations
like accessibility, powers hortages, educational, misleading information on the Internet, and
many others. For science communication, Internet has become an effective scientific
communication media, and plays a great role in communication. But at the same time, the
spread characteristics of Internet itself also can produce some negative effects during the
communication process.

7. Gravity- Gravity, also called gravitation, in mechanics, the universal force of attraction acting
between all matter. It is by far the weakest known force in nature and thus plays no role in
determining the internal properties of everyday matter. On
theotherhand,throughitslongreachanduniversalaction,itcontrolsthetrajectories of bodies in the

improvements in measurements of gravity around Earth, other planets, and the Moon and in
experiments on the nature of gravitation.

8. Television - Television is one of our most important means of communication. It brings

moving pictures and sounds from around the world into millions of people's homes. The
utter amount of time that TV occupies in people's lives has it's affects on culture as well as
culture has on it. Television is probably the largest single common contributor to young and
most other people’s ideas about life-goals and vocations. This pilot project will take the first
major step toward ascertaining television's contributions to ideas about science, technology,
innovation, and the people associated with the seen deavors.

9. Computer - Computers are probably the biggest advance in scientific technology. They allow
us to analyze huge data sets and run statistical analyses far quicker than in the past. Scientists
also use them to run simulations and build electronic models.Computers make people’s lives
easier and more comfortable. they provide opportunities for staying in touch to billions of
people who may very well be indifferent parts of the world. Today people can drive
computerized cars and work for employers from other countries without even seeing them.

10. Guns- One of the contributions of guns to our scientific development is that from the early
years of gunpowder warfare through to the current age, gun designers and artillery men were
often schooled in ballistics, geometry, calculus, and other mathematics disciplines which
spread this knowledge to a far wider group of people than would have been likely without
guns.

VentilationPaperNo.6

I.After reading the article, answer the following questions on the spaces provided.
1. What is the main objective of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations?
Answer: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs, also known as the
Global Goals) are 17 goals with 169 targets that all UN Member States have agreed to work
towards achieving by the year 2030. They set out a vision for a world free from poverty, hunger
and disease, eradicate poverty. Health has a central place in SDG 3“Ensure healthy lives and
promote well-being for all at all ages”, underpinned by 13 targets that cover a wide spectrum of
WHO’s work. The SDGs aim to be relevant to all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to
promote prosperity while protecting the environment and tackling climate change. They have a
strong focus on improving equity to meet the needs of women, children and disadvantaged
populations in particular so that“no one is left behind”.

2. What is the standardized unit that measures resource use and waste?
Answer: Global Hectare(GHA) is the standardized unit that measures both the biocapacity of the
earth and the demand on biocapacity or ecological footprint. This would become the basis in
order to control and give balance on the consumption and waste of humans with the natural
resources.

3. What is the standard response to eradicating poverty?

Answer: To signs the UN’s new sustainable development goals (SDGs) are about to offer
thefresh plan for how to save the world and the Growth- had become the main object ofprogress
for over 70 years but apparently, it was not able to minimize the number of families and people
living in poverty. Give the residence of the country a good work and play attention for the family
who have mostly needed.

4. What is the threshold of the Earth for adequately sustaining life?

Answer: The threshold of the Earth for adequately sustaining life is 1.9 global hectares
annually.Even with such amount of $6,000 and consumption, people and individuals can still
achieve life expectancy and happiness.

5. According to the majority of people in middle-and high income countries, what puts the
planet and society at risk?
Answer: Overconsumption is what puts our planet and society at risk. Overconsumption brings
imbalance to our planet; it destroys and exhausts the life support system of earth and thus,
leading our lives at risk as well as putting our wellbeing at a critical state.

6. How much hectares should each of us consume annually based on the resources available in
the planet?
Answer: Each of us should consume a 1.8 global hectares annually as what is rested upon
theavailable resources on our planet. This is the margin by which determines the adequate
resources for each individual who resides on our planet to consume.

7. What are two indicators of the quality of life given in the article?
Answer: The two indicators of a quality life were life expectancy and happiness. These determine
that, even with an enough amount of resources to consume, we can still have the sense of
satisfaction and quality of our lives.

8. What crisis in the planet would force us to slow down if we do not do so voluntarily?Answer:
Climate change would become as a crisis that would stop us humans from overconsumption of
our natural resources. We cannot shun the fact about the laws of nature; nature would still find its
way to stop us from destroying it.Thus,if all of us would not wake up and voluntarily slowdown
ourconsumption then,we should be prepared for the consequences of our actions.

9. According to Hickel, what must be done instead of urging poor countries to“catchup” with
rich ones?
Answer: De-development or to“CatchDown”is what Dr.Jason Hickel encourage and urges all of
us especially those who live in highly developed countries in order for less developed ones to
keep pace with the drastic growth and changes that is happening around the world.

10. How would the different areas if the world react to the idea of the“de-development”?
Answer: I believe that there would be conflicting reactions from various parts of the world when
it comes to the idea of the de-development. Those who live in rich and well-developed countries
would have a hard time accepting such change and method of promoting development and
progress. On the other hand, it would become favorable for those in less fortunate countries in
promulgating such plan as anchored with the objective of development. But despite of such
dispute, I still believe that, with enough information to be disseminated and that would make
people to better understand its advantages to all of us, our world, and especially our nature then,
we can still find theway to live by and accept the idea of de-development. After all, we could
still improve our lives and integrate quality to it even though we reduce and lessen our
consumption.

THE ESSENCE OF TECHNOLOGY

VentilationPaperNo.7

Essence of Technology Technology is a broad term that refers both to artifacts created by
humans, such as machines, and the methods used to create those artifacts.Technology is also
often used as the generic term to encompass all the technologies people develop and use in their
lives. More broadly, technology can be used to refer to a way of doing something or a means of
organization: for instance, democracy might beconsidered a social technology. When the word
“technology” is used today, it is mostoften used to refer to high technology – computers, cell
phones, rockets – rather than technology in general. Technology involves the purposeful
application of knowledge, experience and resources to create processes and products that meet
human needs. The needs and wants of people in particular communities determine the technology
that is developed and how it is applied. People judge the desirability of technological
applications by their impact on health, personal well- being and lifestyle, economies and
ecosystems. We Pinoy’s are very fond of adopting changes, what if those changes ornew things
replace the love that binds our family, the happiness that we found when weshare moments with
our love ones. I believe that the time will come that we humans arebeing useless because were
too dependent to technology. I hope not. It's never too late to see our mistakes and make a
change.
Modern technology has solved many problems that people face and play an important
role in the development of many countries. Modern technologies create many kinds of products -
computers, cloning technology, and video games etc.. Technology today has made life better and
quicker In our modern society, people can't see themselves without computers, cellphones,
voicemail...etc...As we look at technologies, questions are risen. The Technological progress
make our society moreconvenient and safe. Making impossible things possible are similar
features of the change which previous people have experienced by social change, like shifting
from a hunting society to an agricultural society and establishing a commercial society due to the
invention of new tools. To consider these advantages and change of society, modern technology,
which we use today, might be not only a new tool but also the tool,

GE-6STStemplate 2ndsem.,2020-2021 BSHM/BSEntrep

7

which makes a dramatic change in history. However, the contribution of modern technology to
society should not be eliminated and should be distributed evenly. There're many people that
can't see themselves without the new tools that's because the technology recreates the essence of
humanity and it encourages us to think of all things in the world as standing by, ready for our
consumption. So this definitely affects our perception of the natural world. Nowadays we create
technology, but technology also creates us. Technology comes from necessity. You have a
problem to solve so you invent the solution. You must use technology or innovation to solve it.
So trial and error until you succeed. Most technology is to defer labor. This also points to an
importantissue. Capitalism increases the need for employment. Technology reduces the
availablejobs. This is an un sustainable condition. In a socialist environment technology could
flourish. In a capitalist society money is the barrier to all technology.

THE GOOD LIFE

VentilationPaperNo.8

Answer the questions below in the space provided.

1. When can you consider life is“good”?
Answer: Living the good life means living a life that sets you free. A life that satisfies and
fulfills you, that adds happiness, joy and a sense of purpose to your life. But it also means to live
a life that is worthwhile – a life that makes a contribution, instead of being solely self-centered.
The good life is a life that is not primarily wasted with mundane activities. Instead, it adds value
and contributes to making this world a betterplace. Even more so,it also contributes to your own
growth. The attainment of a high standard of living alone might not be fully fulfilling and will
definitely not set you free. Therefore, the good lifecombines aspects of exploration, self-mastery
and civic responsibility with the endeavor to spend your time in a worthwhile manner that both
satisfies and fulfills. It is onlythrough the combination of these aspects that a joyous and happy
life can be truly considered the goodblife.

2. What is the relationship between the good life and science?

Answer: Science and the good life are interdependent, and they affect each other just like the
concept of cause and effect. Science and its researches and invention have a great impact on
human life, precisely the good life. And it is the pursuit of a good life that fuels the passion for
scientific development in the world. Hence, both of them can be used as cause and effect
alternatively according to a specific situation; for example, paracetamol is a scientific invention
that influences our life in terms of good health.

3. Does technology always lead us to the good life? How and why?

Answer: I personally believe that technology is a tool to build a good life. But, is technology
always leads us to good life? Technology leads us to a good life and the same time it doesn’t
lead us to a good life either. It depends on how we define a good life.Technology can affect us
if we misuse it. So, balance between technology and human labour is essential, technology
never should overpower humans. There’s a advantage and disadvantage in using technology.

THE GOOD LIFE

VentilationPaperNo.9

Answerthequestionsbelow.
1. In your opinion, what constitutes a good life?
Answer: Good life is satisfaction. Being comfortable with the environment you are in and
being happy with the things you have. Good life is being with people who bring joy and
happiness to every second of your life. It is being with people who give meaning to life.
Happiness also constitutes good life. To attain good life we must be able to understand things
better. We should be more particular with the understanding of how life works more than having
an eye on what life offers. A good and happy life is not about attaining material things but
earning worthy life lessons and happy memorable stories. We must be responsible and learn how
to appreciate good things than all the negativities in life.

2. What does Aristotle say about the good life? Does it still stand in the contemporary world?
Answer: According to Aristotle, that having a happiness and good life is about virtue.
According to him, having a prosperity which can be accomplished by living a life according to
virtue is achieved by continually living in various manners or living with high morals. It is still
stands in the contemporary world? Definitely yes because people nowadays looking for the
materials that fit their satisfaction rather than gaining some experiences that gradually help
themselves to sustain their level of morality and goodness.

3. How is the progress of science and technology a movement towards the good life?
Answer: The role of technology is huge in the contemporary world because we’ve known that
we are in the modern world that barely needs technology to sustain our daily needs but it can be
included that technology helps us to shape our world and improving our way in daily lives.
Because of the technology we have a good life because it makes our lives easier than before.

WHEN TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANITY CROSS

VentilationPaperNo.10

Answerordiscussthequestionsstatebelow.
1. Do people really need technology in their lives? Is it really a necessity?
Answer: Technology is now a necessity in terms of every day life, from education to
navigating around a city. We no longer communicate with the outside world and ask for
directions, instead we look inwardly and we ask Siri. As technology improves we relymore and
more on our smartphones, so much so we are becoming lazy in every way. Spelling is becoming
worse, for example, we no longer need to think for ourselves whenwe have a spellchecker at our
finger tips, we can ask Siri to perform calculations for us or ask Siri to ask Google to solve any
problems we may encounter. We heavily rely on our phones for every day tasks, such as
checking train times, finding locations and even just to check the time, technology is slowly
overtaking our lives and we are falling into lazy habits to let it.

2. How do you reconcile the“need”for technology and the dilemma/sitfaces?

Answer:The best way to reconcile the need for technology and the dilemmas it faces
rightnow particularly in ethical issues is intensive literacy or education. We can enumerate alot
of dilemmas which technology is facing right now. I want to focus on one because I believe these
dilemmas should be addressed separately.Perhaps the one of the greatest dilemma that
technology is facing right now is the ethical issues like copyright infringement, violation in
intellectual property rights, computer crimes such as cyberbullying, phishing, scamming and the
likes.

3. Should there be an ethics of technology? Why?Explain.

Answer: Yes, the ethics of technology will in one way or another guide people on how
technology ought to be used in order to prevent abuse and other unfortunate results. The ethics of
responsibility is an appropriate theory that can be used in dealing with technology. Technology
ethics are principles that can be used to govern technology including factors like risk
management and individual rights. They are basically used to understand and resolve moral issues
that have to do with the development and application of technology of different types.
