In order for you to fully grasp the lesson for this week, you need to understand what conflict is all about.
Conflict
In literature, it is a literary device characterized by a struggle between two opposing forces. Conflict
provides crucial tension in any story and is used to drive the narrative forward. It is often used to reveal
a deeper meaning in a narrative while highlighting characters’ motivations, values, and weaknesses.
Types of Conflict
In actuality, conflict is not always bad and does not have to result in violence or hurt feelings. Conflicts are part
of everyday life and they cannot be avoided. However, whether a conflict escalates, ends negatively or is
resolved and ends peacefully in a literary selection, is entirely based on the choices a character/s make. The
choices made by a character in a story reveals his/her feelings, values and attitudes. Most often than not,
his/her response to a conflict determines how a situation ends.
Senator Rodrigo was born on January 29, 1914 in Bulacan, Bulacan, to Marcela
Aldana and Melecio Rodrigo and a blood kin of two great heroes of his native province,
Marcelo Del Pilar and Gregorio Del Pilar.
A politician, polemicist and poet, Mr. Rodrigo was known by the nickname “Soc”, short
for Socrates, for his eloquence in debate.
As a playwright in English and Tagalog, his works are noted for distilling the foibles and wit of the Filipino soul.
Sa Pula, Sa Puti, and his most celebrated play the popular Kuro – Kuro sa likod ng mga Balita – have likewise
won legions of admirers throughout the country. Whether he is delivering a speech in Tagalog or in English,
within or without the halls of the senate, men rise to give their attention to Soc Rodrigo, a man who has given
his best in the service of God and country.
For you to be able to understand the play, read the plot of the play provided below.

about Kulas’ fighting roosters for they were the first thought of Kulas every morning. Kulas explained that he
only cared for the roosters for their own good. Celing didn’t believe any more on Kulas reasons for he was
always defeated by his opponent.
Kulas heard the shouts of people from the cockfight and he was really eager and was begging to Celing
to get the money. Celing had nothing to do but give him money and Kulas went out the house hurriedly.
Teban commanded Celing to bet on Kulas’ opponent. This is her way to get the money Kulas have
spent for sabong for he was always a loser. Celing was right; Kulas went home defeated by his opponent. He
promised never to bet again.
Meanwhile, Castor, an old friend of Kulas and also a cockfighter, went to visit Kulas. When Celing was
out in the market, he taught Kulas some techniques on how to win through cheating -he will bet on his
opponent’s rooster! Kulas went to the fight and bet, but this time, he staked at his opponent’s rooster. Kulas
was disappointed after the fight because his rooster won. He went home and his wife asked him the money for
his rooster won. He said he lost the fight for he bet on the opponent’s side. Celing was astonished and
