Scope and Delimitation

This study will determine the challenges of synchronous

learning and academic performance experienced by the English

major students of Samar Colleges, Inc. In data gathering, the

researchers will only use a questionnaire. The study's

respondents will be randomly selected students of the Bachelor of

Secondary Education major in English in Samar Colleges Inc.

during the School Year 2022-2023.

Definition of terms

The following terms are conceptually and operationally

defined and explained to fully understand how these terms were

used in this study.

Academic Performance – Conceptually, the term pertains to the

level of intelligence of the student and the measurement of

student accomplishment over diverse academic discourses.

Operationally, it is the end of the efforts exerted by the

students. It represents outcomes that indicate the extent to

which English major students has accomplished the specific goals.

Educational Setting – Conceptually, the term refers to a school

or other educational institution, including elementary, high


school, and post graduation schools where interpretive services

are provided to a student. Operationally, the term was taken in

the same context as it was defined conceptually. But specifically

in Samar college Inc.

Electronic devices – This refers to the components for

controlling the flow of electrical currents for the purpose of

information processing and system control. This includes mobile

phones, laptop, computers, and etc. Operationally, the term plays

a significant part in this study for this will determine how

students are able to attend and what specific devices they are

using to be present on their synchronous classes in this time of

pandemic.

English majors – This refers to a degree that focuses on English

language considering about reading, analyzing, and writing text.

Moreover, this term means a humanities degree alternative that

comes with a lot of openings for students to explore different

techniques of manner. Operationally, the term was taken in the

same context as it was defined conceptually.

Internet Connection – refers to the access in any devices to have

an ability to connect to the internet and to exchange data over

the public internet. Operationally, the term was taken in the

same context as it was defined conceptually.


Students’ Engagement – Conceptually, this refers to the degree of

attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that

students show when they’re learning, which extends to the level

of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education.

Operationally, the term was taken on how English Major students

participated during the synchronous learning amidst the pandemic.

Synchronous Learning – This refers to a general term used to

describe forms of education, instruction that employs video

conferencing and other multimedia techniques to allow teachers

and students to interact with each other at the same tine even if

they are not at the same place. Also it provides discussion

rooms that allow students to ask questions and share ideas

online. Operationally, the term referred to the educational

setting that the students and teachers used to collaborate with

each other.

Teaching-learning process- This term refers to the combined

process where a teacher assesses understanding needs, establishes

particular learning objectives, formulates teaching and

strategies, enforces a plan of work, and assesses the outcomes of


the instruction. Operationally, the term refers to how the

teachers teach and what processes they provide for their students

throughout the synchronous sessions.

Technical issues – This term refers to the issues regarding

technical matters. Operationally, this term alludes to the

predicament that the student had towards technicalities of

connections all through synchronous classes during pandemic.

Time management – This term refers to coordination of tasks and

activities to maximize effectiveness of an individual’s efforts.

Operationally, the term indicates how English Major Students of

Samar College, Inc., skillfully prioritize given tasks to

effectively attain overall learning goals.
