A community is a group of people who live close to each other. In this day and age, however, online
communities are the fastest-growing ones. A virtual community is one whose members interact with
each other mainly via the Internet. These communities get people with similar interests together so that
they can share their interests or help each other in different ways.
Virtual communities can just be for fun, but many of them have a serious purpose. For instance, many
women who are soon-to-be moms can now get support and advice from others who have experience or
those who are expecting their children. Similarly, many people join a virtual community for
educational purposes. MOOCs, or massive open online courses, are places where people can join an
educational course using the Internet.
In some online communities, members not only communicate with each other online, but they may
also meet up in the real world. For example, people interested in cosplay may use online communities
to organize cosplay conventions where members can dress up and meet with others. Many of these
communities cross international borders. Book Crossing, a social networking site for book-lovers, has
members in 132 different countries.
Moreover, some online communities care more about improving the real community that they live in.
Street Bank is a virtual community where real-life neighbors can offer to help each other out by lending
