21st Century Media: A New Learning Avenue for

Youth or A Detrimental Information Medium?
The advent of the 2000’s introduced us to new ways of gathering,
transmitting, and delivering information and data. Our generation have
witnessed the fast paced advancement of media, from pens, inks and
papers to keyboards, screens and emails. Now that we are immersed to
digital media more than ever, it has presented us with disadvantages as
well as how it is beneficial to our lives.

It is with no doubt that the New Media truly helped us in our

community development by providing us platforms where we can freely
express our feelings and directly send and receive information with
little to no barrier. However, this free-flow of information comes with its
drawbacks. In recent years, fake news, manipulative and malicious
contents in online platforms have become noticeable. It is quite
alarming to see how fast the figures have been rising in the past
decade. This posed a question, is the New Media’s advantages weighs
out the chaos it is causing to our era?

The youth has always been the subject and was a critical target for
online predators because of their vulnerability. Facebook among other
social media sites limits the age of their users for 18 years old and
above, but they don’t have the verification process needed to prove
that someone is over 18, just sign in, fill up and you now have access to a
world uncensored, unfiltered and unsafe. On the other hand, the new
forms of media is serving as the avenue for the youth to voice out their
concerns, feelings and emotions. Somehow, media is serving its
purpose in our lives, but we only need to limit its use, remember,
everything in excess is harmful.

In connection with these concerns, the government in partnership

with social networking sites such as Facebook have stepped up to stop
the spread of fake news and malicious contents. With the help of
independent fact-checkers like Rappler, one by one misleading posts
and pages were taken down.

Yes, media is helpful especially the New Media, however excessive

use and misuse of it can lead to consequences that are irreversible.
Now, we can only stay safe if we become vigilant, report suspicious
posts and pages. As youths, we should take responsibilities of our
actions and only use media according to its purpose, through this,
media can be our best friend!
