Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time
As one hears stories of individual Catholic churches around the country, there is a fairly wide variety of
problems that they have to overcome: not enough money, not enough priests, etc. At the Shrine, we have
a problem that one doesn’t hear that much about it, and I would ask you to help us with it.
We have been unsuccessful in our attempts to recruit enough workers in the area of worship: those areas
which enable us to have Masses on weekends and weekdays. We are currently in serious need of the
following liturgical ministers: sacristans, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, and acolytes. We need additional
people at both weekday and weekend Masses.
Sacristans manage all of the objects that need in order to have Mass: sacred vessels, books, linens,
vestments, as well as bread and wine to be consecrated. The Sacristan at the Shrine also supervises the
collection at Mass.
Lectors publicly proclaim readings from Holy Scripture, as well as the Prayer of the Faithful.
Eucharistic Ministers assist the presiding priest in distributing communion. Acolytes are Eucharistic
Ministers who assist the presider during the Liturgy of the Eucharist, that is, the second half of the Mass.
The Sacristan(s) position is a part-time hourly paid position. All other worship ministry roles are strictly
volunteer.
In terms of scheduling, please don’t feel that by volunteering you are going to be terribly burdened with a
great number of assignments. Ideally, we would like to have many people come forward to do this work.
(More volunteers and work very much divided and broadly distributed is “good church” and more what
official church documents from Vatican II and elsewhere have in mind.)
You may ask to do a ministry very regularly, on particular days, and at particular times. This is fine and we
will accommodate you as we are able to do so. Alternatively, you may ask to do the ministry only
occasionally: that’s also fine. The schedule is prepared and distributed in advance.
Sometimes you may want to perform a role within the worship ministry, at a specific day and time that has
been assigned to another volunteer. In that case, an important part of being a worship minister is
graciously stepping aside and letting someone else perform the function that day. Occasionally, we might
suggest that you train in a different role other than the one you offer.
If someone has discouraged you from being involved in one of these ministries in the past, I would ask you
to reconsider. During the passage of time, you have grown and our need is greater. If you have decided
that you simply aren’t able to do any of these ministries, I would ask you to encourage someone else to
take one of these roles. All of us should be encouraging others anyway, and this is a great way to do so.
What qualities does a Catholic need in order to perform these roles? For starters, it’s important to be
humble and flexible. Every liturgical role, including that of the presiding priest, is a servant role. All of us
are here to contribute our services for the sake of the larger community which comes together for the
Eucharistic meal. Another important quality important for liturgical ministers is that you be willing to
continue to work on your own spirituality. All of the liturgical roles provide ample, regular opportunities to
reflect on your own growth as spiritual person, your journey toward holiness, and your relationship to
Jesus. As we approach the liturgical season of Lent, I encourage you to consider undertaking a new role
here at the Shrine.
If you would like to volunteer for any of these important ministries (sacristan, lector, Eucharistic Minister,
and acolyte), please email worship@stanthonyshrine.org or 617-426-0623 and someone will contact you.
Thank you for considering this request! May God bless you during the coming week.
