Complex Engineering Problem Assignment for ES-475 (Optical Communications and

Computing) - 2023
Weightage = 10 %

Problem Statement:
Design an optical communication link between an optical transmitter present in Islamabad, and
an optical receiver at GIKI. The link should be designed keeping in mind the population at GIKI
campus and the data-rate requirements accordingly (e.g. a good estimate for data-rate
requirement could be obtained via average requirement per user or via demand during peak
hours).
Tasks:

1. Design a reasonable plan for cable layout between the two connecting points taking
into consideration the towns/localities in-between the two points (you can make use of
google maps, or anything similar, if need be). (1 Mark)
2. Select appropriate 1) optical transmitter source, 2) receiver photodiode and 3) optical
fiber which you would use to implement such a link. You can choose these components
from amongst the different options available in your textbook or use web/internet for
such purpose. However, all selections must be justified in terms of their specifications,
interoperability, and suitability for the desired application. (3 Marks)
3. Perform a link power budget analysis for your link, showing associated calculations and
the conclusions that you draw from such calculations. The analysis should corroborate
with the specs of your chosen components. Determine and justify the transmit power
to be used, guided by your power budget analysis. (2 Marks)
4. Perform a link rise-time budget analysis for your link taking into consideration your data-
rate requirements. The analysis should corroborate with the specs of your chosen
components. All associated calculations must be shown and the conclusions that you
draw from such calculations. (2 Marks)
5. Perform a BER (bit-error rate) analysis and determine the required SNR for a reasonable
BER for your link, Show all the associated calculations and determine what conclusions
can you determine from this analysis which can help you in your link budget analysis.
(2 Marks)
Instructions:

• The above problem has many open-ended elements and hence there could be more than
1 good solutions to it. Hence, every student must come up with a unique design solution.
Any copying will result in 0 marks
• Submission details:
o CEP Group: The students should form a group of no more than 2 students and
send the course instructor, via email, the names of the group members by April
14th, 2023. A group no. will then be allotted to the group which will be used in
CEP reports and viva.
o CEP Report: The report should be of standard format with no more than 5 pages
in double-column format – preferably use the IEEE Word template for
conferences [https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html]. The
report should include the sections of Title, Authors, Abstract, Introduction, A
unique section for each CEP task and its calculations and results, Conclusion and
References. Any item other than these can be put in the appendices.
o Deadline for submission is May 10th, 2023 (11:59 PM PST). Late submission
policy will apply as follows:
▪ Same day: -25%
▪ One day late: -50%
▪ More than 1 day late: -100%
o CEP Viva: A viva will be conducted with the course instructor after the CEP report
submission. The schedule of the viva will be given later to the students. You can also
make a separate PowerPoint presentation based on your report for your viva, if it suits
you more, but it is not mandatory, and you can present directly from your report. Marks
to the CEP tasks will be allocated individually based on the ability to answer the viva
questions.
