Instructions

This project requires students to work in groups of 2-4 students. Each group shall submit a single report
for grading. The report should make a simple table of members’ names, student IDs and their
contributions to the report.

Assignment Description

Develop a MATLAB program to solve the following problems. For simplicity, we assume circular
orbits only, i.e., eccentricity e = 0

The program takes as input the five orbital parameters:

• Orbit height over ground Inclination ℎ

• Inclination 𝑖

• Eccentricity 𝑖 = 0, ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒

• Right Ascension of the Ascending Node (RAAN)

• Angle of Perigee

Assume the latitude φ and longitude λ of the satellite over ground (so called subsatellite point) to be
φ = λ = 0 at the time t = 0 s.

1. Find the latitude φ and longitude λ of the satellite as a function of t. [10 Marks]

2. Plot the location over ground on a world map. [8 Marks]

3. Plot the location in space over a globe in a 3D view. [8 Marks]

4. Find the elevation and azimuth angles of the satellite with respect to the ground station as a
function of t. Assume your city of birth as the ground station location. [8 Marks]

5. Mark the time slots when the satellite is visible. [6 Marks]

6. Find the distance of the satellite to ground station as a function of time. [5 Marks]

7. Plot the distance, elevation, and azimuth for one exemplary overpass of the satellite.

[10 Marks]
