Title: Breaking Down Math Anxiety: An Action Research Project on Developing a Supportive Classroom

Environment

Context and rationale: Math anxiety is a prevalent issue among students that can significantly affect
their academic performance, self-esteem, and overall enjoyment of the subject. The problem is
especially pronounced in mathematics, where students often feel overwhelmed and stressed by the
subject matter. In light of this, this action research project seeks to explore ways of creating a supportive
classroom environment that can help alleviate students' math anxiety and improve their attitudes
towards mathematics.

Objectives:

To identify the factors that contribute to math anxiety among students in a school setting

To develop and implement teaching strategies that can help alleviate math anxiety and improve
students' attitudes towards mathematics

To evaluate the impact of the teaching strategies on students' math anxiety and attitudes towards
mathematics

Action research questions:

What are the factors that contribute to math anxiety among students in a school setting?

How can teaching strategies be developed and implemented to alleviate math anxiety and improve
students' attitudes towards mathematics?

What is the impact of the teaching strategies on students' math anxiety and attitudes towards
mathematics?

Methodology: The study will be conducted in a school setting and will use action research methodology
to gather and analyze data, make changes, and evaluate the impact of those changes. The focus will be
on developing and implementing teaching strategies that build student confidence, incorporating
technology into the learning process, and fostering a positive classroom culture that motivates students
to engage with mathematical concepts.

Data Collection: Qualitative and quantitative data will be collected through various methods, such as
student surveys, teacher observations, and focus group discussions. The data will be analyzed using
statistical methods and interpreted to draw meaningful conclusions and recommendations.
Expected Outcomes: The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for educators
and administrators who are working to create supportive learning environments that help students
overcome their math anxiety and achieve success in mathematics. The findings will also contribute to
the broader field of education by providing evidence-based strategies for addressing math anxiety and
promoting positive attitudes towards mathematics. These insights will be crucial in addressing the needs
of students and ensuring that they have the best possible learning experiences, both in mathematics
and other subjects.
