A leather belt 9 mm × 250 mm is used to drive a cast iron pulley 900
mm in diameter at 336 r.p.m. If the active arc on the smaller pulley is

m, which runs at a speed of 90 r.p.m. The angle of lap is 160°; the
3 angle of groove 45°; the coefficient of friction 0.28; the mass of rope
1.5 kg / m and the allowable tension in each rope 2400 N. Find the
number of ropes required.
A pulley of 0.9 m diameter revolving at 200 r.p.m. is to transmit 7.5 L3 CO3 4M
kW. Find the width of a leather belt if the maximum tension is not to

exceed 145 N in 10 mm width. The tension in the tight side is twice
that in the slack side. Determine the diameter of the shaft and the
dimensions of the various parts of the pulley, assuming it to have six
arms of elliptical cross-section in which the major axis is twice the
minor axis. . Maximum shear stress is not to exceed 63 MPa.
Assume the arms have the tensile stress may be taken as 15 N/mm2 .
The diameter of the hub is 2 times the diameter of shaft.

from its free end, find : 1. Diameter of the handle, 2. Cross-section of

bending stress for the lever material may be taken as 50 MPa and

A workshop crane is lifting a load of 25 kN through a 6x19 wire L3 CO3 6M
rope and a hook. The weight of the hook etc. is 15 kN. The rope
drum diameter may be taken as 30 times the diameter of the rope.
The load is to be lifted with an acceleration of 1 m/s2. Calculate the
diameter of the wire rope. Take a factor of safety of 6 and Young’s

taken as 1800 MPa. The cross-sectional area of the wire rope may be
taken as 0.38 times the square of the wire rope diameter.The

factor of safety (ratio of the breaking load to the maximum working
load) under the following conditions of operation : The wire rope is
required to lift from a depth of 900 meters. The maximum speed is 3

m / s and the acceleration is 1.5 m / s2, when starting under no slack
condition. The diameter of the wire may be taken as 0.05 d, where d
is the diameter of wire rope. The breaking strength of plough steel is
1880 N/mm2 and the modulus of elasticity of the entire rope is 84 ×
103 N/mm2. The weight of the rope is 53 N/m length.
