1. What is Electrophoresis?

Electrophoresis is the movement of molecules by an electric current.

Electrophoresis is routinely applied to the analysis of proteins and nucleic acids. Each
phosphate group on a DNA polymer is ionized, making DNA a negatively charged
molecule.

2. What are the most common uses for electrophoresis?

Electrophoresis analysis is used in forensics to compare DNA, in medical laboratories to do

genetic testing, and in microbiology labs to identify microorganisms. In addition to analyzing
proteins or DNA, electrophoresis is also used to create purified samples of proteins.

3. What is the principle of Electrophoresis?

The fundamental principle of electrophoresis is the existence of charge separation

between the surface of a particle and the fluid immediately surrounding it. An applied
electric field acts on the resulting charge density, causing the particle to migrate and the
fluid around the particle to flow.
