Read the following text.
Dear Dimas,
I have one male cat named Simba. I got him from my friend, Sandi, a couple months ago.
Simba spends most of his day by napping on the couch. He likes to be petted by me when
he is napping. Sometimes he goes outside to climb the wall fences or trees and takes a nap.
What a sluggish cat.
Simba is an adult cat. Now, he is about one and a half years old. His coat has two main
colors, black and white. He has black stripes on his upper face, body, and tail, while his neck
and four legs are white. He has a light pink nose.
Although Simba is a sluggish cat, he always eagerly runs to his bowl when I bring him some
food. He likes most food that I give him, especially fresh or cooked fish. I feed him twice or
three times every day.
Love,
Rina

My name is Jane and I am 17 years old now. Since I was a kid, I have always been
interested in cats. Every time I saw them, I felt they were the cutest animals on this
planet. Many people love dogs but not me.
One day, on my 7th birthday, my father brought me a white kitten. It was one of the
best days I have ever had. I fell in love with the kitten and I called him Coco. According to
my father, Coco was a Persian breed. He had clear white fur. His face was partly covered
by it. His nose looked tiny and cute, especially if he stared at me. He liked playing, so
many people in the house loved him. His favorite food was chicken breast.
Every day, I spent some time with him. Once a month, I brought him to the pet shop
for grooming with my father. Coco stayed with me for more than four years. My heart was
broken when Coco was sick because of heartworm disease. It was caused by the spread of
infectious mosquitoes. I asked my father to bring him to the veterinary, but it was too late.
I was sad when my father said I had to let Coco go. Coco was the last pet that I ever had.

Children with dreadlocks are considered special in Dieng Plateau, Central Java. The
ritual of shaving off their dreadlocks is truly exceptional. It is performed to protect the
children from the influence of evil spirits. The precious moment is celebrated in a series of
ritual ceremonies known as the Ruwatan Anak Gimbal.
Dieng's dreadlock children are born with normal hair, but at a certain stage, their
hair amazingly turns into dreadlocks. The locals believe these kids are chosen by their
ancestors to accept these gifts. The dreadlocks may not be trimmed unless the children
themselves ask for it. Before this sacred ritual, the parents must grant the child's
requests. Some children ask for bicycles or dolls while some others ask for livestock, crops
and jewelries.
The ceremony commences with the procession of the dreadlock kids carried around
the village. They paraded on a Javanese traditional horse-drawn carriage and followed by
various traditional art processions. The kids will then be taken to Arjuna Temple where
the ritual will take place. After the ritual leader cut their hair, he took it to a lake to
submerged the hair as a symbol of returning to the ancestors.
Nowadays, the ceremony has been a part of an annual cultural festival. The festival
also presents art and cultural performances, and an exhibition of Dieng's products. This
festival has attracted many tourists to come and multiplied local economic growth as well
as community-based tourism activities.

anywhere since it was bigger than he was.
“It‟s impossible for a weak worker like you to bring this crumb of bread. I‟ll show you

“I know how to bring it,” said another worker ant behind them.
“Small Head, you are just a worker. Do you think that you are stronger than a soldier?”
said Big Head.
“You said a worker or a soldier can‟t but together we can. I‟ll show you,” said Small
Head.
Small Head waved his antenna and called a horde of ants.
Then, Small Head stood on a small stone and said, “My friends, it‟s a big food for us
but we need to work together to realize our dream. We can lift and move this big crumb
to our ant hill. We can cut this big crumb into tiny pieces and bring them.”
Soldiers and workers started biting and cutting the crumb of bread into tiny pieces.

grenadine syrup. Pomegranate is high in dietary fiber, folic acid, vitamin C, and K.
The plant, which may attain 5 or 7 meters in height, has elliptic to lance-shaped,
bright-green leaves about 7.5 cm long. The handsome axillary orange-red flowers are
borne toward the ends of the branchlets. The calyx is tubular and persistent and has five
to seven lobes. The petals are lance-shaped, inserted between the calyx lobes. The ovary
is embedded in the calyx tube and contains several compartments in two series, one
above the other.
The fruit is as large as an orange, obscurely six-sided, with a smooth leathery skin
that ranges from brownish yellow to red. It is divided into several chambers containing
many thin transparent arils of reddish, juicy pulp, each surrounding an angular
elongated seeds. The pollination of this fruit is a self pollinated process.

James Brooke
- By Paul Nation
James Brooke was born in India in 1803 and sent to school in England. He went
back to India to work but he did not like the situation. Next, he worked on a ship and
learned foreign places. When Brooke reached Sarawak, the people, especially the Dayaks
were fighting the sultan named Hassim. Hassim asked for Brooke‟s help to stop the war
and promised him to give Sarawak country for that.
Brooke began to teach Hassim‟s men how to use guns. Seeing that, the people
were afraid. Brooke facilitated negotiation between the sultan and the people to end the
war peacefully. After the war ended, he became the first English Sultan of Sarawak in
1842.
Brooke was a very good leader. He did law enforcement to the people. Soon they
felt safer and enjoyed a happier and more peaceful life. James Brooke was very interested
in learning and he wanted the people of Sarawak to learn about the world. He invited
teachers from Britain to come to Sarawak and built the first schools in the country. People
became more and more interested in studying. Many parents sent their children to the
schools so that they could make their lives better.
In 1863 Brooke returned to England because he was not well. Another member of
his family named Charles Brooke became the second English Sultan of Sarawak. James
Brooke died in England in 1868. Now Sarawak is a part of Malaysia, but the name Brooke
is still remembered.
