HISTORY OF SWIMMING IN THE


PHILIPPINES

1900 Americans introduced


swimming as a comparative
EVENT 1 sports to the Philipppines.

1907
Construction of the first
swimming pool of the
country.

1911 Filipinos watched avidly from the


sidelines as the first swimming
EVENT 3 championship meet was held at
the American Columbia Club
swimming pool with competing
Americans.

During the Far Eastern Games


held in Manila, the Philippines team
composed of Conrado Benitez, J.
1912
Del Pan, C. Aiville and EVENT 4
L. Cristobal won the championship
against China and Japan.
A number of local swimmers had

1913 emerged from different parts of the


country who competed against each
other in the championship organized
EVENT 5 by the Americans. Out of 42 individual
entries, the late Conrado Benitez
emerged as the most outstanding
Filipino swimmer.

1928
The greatest achievement of a
Filipino in sport. Nicknamed
"ILOCANO SHARK", Teofilo
Ildefonso won the Philippines its
EVENT 6
first olympic medal by winning
bronze in 200 m breastroke event
at 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.

1932
Teofilo repeated its feat in
1932 Olympics in Los Angeles
becoming the First Filipino to
EVENT 7 win multiple medals in
Olympics.
The WWII brought a pause to
swimming and so with the

other sports.
The succeeding years up to 1951
saw the staging of the sixth
Formosa- the Philippines EVENT 8

The First Asian Games held in New
