Week 4

The first phase of week 4 (December 18, 2018) entailed a comprehensive course on the

required leadership skills in the healthcare sector. In a program that lasted between 7 A.M. and 5

P.M. I attended Standard of Care meetings, Care Plan meetings with family and Quality Control

meetings. At the end of the course, I met all the three learner objectives in line with the course

objective.

On December 21, 2018, between 7 AM and 5 PM, I completed a course aimed at

determining the best leadership communication skills. By attending IDT meeting and the

recruitment for RN/LPN for hire, I noted various techniques of communication and information

dissemination. Among the concepts that I acquired are audience listening skills, effective speech

presentation and the communication tools in information dissemination.

On December 22, 2018, I attended a 3-hour course aimed at determining the optimal

adolescent calories intake. The program focused on the daily intake of calories and the quantities

that can lead to health complications like obesity. This is still an ongoing program.

Week 5

The first program in week five started on December 26, 2018 and was aimed at applying

inter-professional collaboration in leadership. From 7 am to 5 pm, I learned how to identify,

apply and assess leadership skills that foster inter-professional collaboration. By attending a

series of meetings, I observed some of these skills in operation. The program has not yet been

completed.

December 28, 2018 marked the second part of week 5 course. From 7AM to 5 PM, I was

exposed to the basic presentation tools that foster effective information dissemination. Microsoft

PowerPoint emerged as handy tool in designing effective presentations. In a program that went

to completion, I was able to attend IDT meetings that included presentations. This was a perfect

platform for me to reflect on the leadership practices in the presentation process.

On December 29, 2018, a new health issue was introduced and is still ongoing. A critical

discussion on childhood obesity was the main area of investigation. The four-hour session

entailed an observation of brainstorming sessions on how to combat childhood obesity. The

causes and appropriate solutions were the main points of discussion.

Week 6

The first session in Week 6 was held on December 30, 2018 and was focused on best

practices that can improve patients’ well-being. The session was aimed at identifying potential

health issues that affect patients and their families, recommend possible solutions and identify

the best ways to uphold patients’ respect and preferences. By attending meetings, I was able to

gain more insight into these topics.

January 4, 2019 marked the second phase of Week 6 and was focused on the organization

of healthcare components. In this session of the 6th week, I realized how important it was to

implement measures that lead to quality improvement in healthcare.

A continuation of the discussion on childhood obesity was held on January 5, 2019. In

the four-hour session, the major focus was on factors that help in preventing childhood obesity.

The discussion focused on the value of food consumption and physical exercise interventions.
JOURNAL WEEK 4 THROUGH 7 4

Through observation of the BINGO game on childhood obesity, among other activities, I

realized the value of such interventions.

Week 7

January 8, 2019 was a continuation of the presentation course. In this phase, the aim was

to identify the major tools used in passing information, with a particular focus on Microsoft

PowerPoint. Through attending IDT meetings and Standards of Care meetings, among other

sessions, I acquired more knowledge on the power of presentations towards health improvement.

The next phase of week 7 was a 10-hour session held on January 11, 2019. This part was

a continued evaluation of the power of presentations in healthcare leadership. On this day, I

reviewed discussions and attended morning meetings with directors and also got engaged in a

series of data analysis sessions. At the end of the day, I appreciated the value of visual

presentation in data healthcare leadership.

To sum up week 7, a four-hour session was organized on communication skills. This

session concentrated on what healthcare leaders need to know in order to present their

information in the right way. The power of communication was seen an important tool in

winning the attention of the audience.
