William G. Morgan

- he also developed a new game called "MINTONETTE"
Alfred Halstead
- he is the one who changed the "mintonette" into "volleyball"
- he noticed the volleying nature of the game during its first exhibition match in 1896 at the
international YMCA training school
Net
- measures 2.75 m tall and 10.6 m long
- Elementary net measure 2.10 m for boys and 2.0 5 m for girls.
- High school level measure 2.43 m for boys and 2.24 m for girls.
Antenna (Rod)
- placed on each side of the net, just on top or aligned with the sidelines or boundary of the
court, extending its boundaries vertically upward.
- the rod is 2.55 m in length.
Ball
- it should have a circumference of 65 to 67cm, weigh 262-280 grams, 2 kg force per
centimeter square
Volleyball court
- The court measures 18 m by 9 m, and is divided into two equal halves by the centerline
- attack line measured 3 meters from centerline
3 meters between the attack line and center line is called "attack zone" or "attack area"

Back set
- a set made when the player who is setting the ball has his/her back toward the hitter
Block
- the first line of defense
Blocking error
- a violation that consists of touching net
Bump
- the use of the forearm to pass or set the ball
Center line
- the boundary that runs under the net and divides the court into two equal playing areas
Middle hitter/blocker
- position on a team that is primarily responsible for blocking
Outside hitter
- player who is normally responsible for attacking the ball
Pancake dig
- a player literally dives headfirst toward the ball by stretching
Pass
- the act of receiving and delivering the ball to the setter
Rally
- a continuous exchange of hit, pass, or attack between two teams
Ready position
- the flexed, yet comfortable, posture a player assumes before moving
Red card
- a severe sanction given by the first referee
Rotation
- the collective clockwise movement of players
Serve
- the act by the player to start the play or signals the start of a volleyball game
Cross court
- an angular shot made from one side of the offensive team
Dig
- the act of successfully receiving the ball or act of recovering an attacked ball close to the
court
Dig pass
- contacting the ball with the forearms in order to deliver the ball to the setter
Double hit/contact
- successive hits made by the same player (illegal)
FIVB
- federation internationale de volleyball or international volleyball federation
Floater
- a serve with no spin
Foul
- a violation of the rules which falls under misconduct or unsportsmanlike
Free ball
- a ball that is delivered over the net to the opposing team
Hit
- offensively strike the ball in an effort to terminate the rally
Joust
- the act of simultaneously making contact with the ball
Jump serve
- one of the most feared serves in volleyball
Ace
- a serve that results directly in a point without further action by players on the serving
team
Antenna
- the vertical rod along the outside edge of the net
Assist
- passing or setting the ball to a teammate who attacks the ball for a kill
Attack
- a broad term that can mean many different things.
In the Philippines by 1916, the skill set and spikes were introduced and, four years later, a
“three hit rule” and a rule against hitting from the back row were established
Underhand serve
- considered the most basic serving style in playing volleyball
Overhead serve
- a kind of serve in which a player tosses the ball and strikes it over his/her head with an
open hand.
Jump serve
- is a type of overhead serve but is more difficult to execute
First referee
- has the overall authority from the start until the end of the match.
- has the final decision or safe during the game in terms of officiating.
Second referee
- assist the first referee in the conduct of the game
- has own set of duty or jurisdiction in the game
- is in charge of timeout and substitutions used by each team. In the first and concern about
sub substitute and second time time out of the team
Line judge
- He or she reports if the ball lands in or out of the playing court
- are in charge of the ball activity for both side and end lines, including if the ball was touch
by a player ( checked ball) before landing outside the playing court
