I should change my current classroom practices because the skills needed to succeed in the future are different than what schools currently teach. As technology evolves, the classroom is expanding beyond physical spaces into online platforms. Students need to be equipped with skills like critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity so they can learn independently and adapt to different situations. Their interests, strengths, and preferences should be considered to maximize their potential and prepare them for jobs that may not even exist yet.

Why should I change my current classroom practices?
It is said that the world is now on the threshold of fourth
industrial revolution, an era characterized by the digital and technological media. An era for which the mental, physical and social skill-sets needed to successfully maneuver one ’s self is significantly different from what schools are now preparing students for. In fact, it has been said that the jobs which will obtain in the next ten years are not yet known. What is known however, is that the gap between now and then needs to be filled urgently. Jamaican students perform comparably with students worldwide however, they will be left behind if a deliberate attempt is not now made to adequately prepare them to function comparably in years to come. With the boundaries of the classroom evolving beyond the physical space to incorporate cyberspace on various platforms, students need to be engaged in navigating such spaces as the learning and regurgitation of content is no longer the focus. The same information available to me is readily available to students so the focus is not what they will learn but the need to equip them with the requisite skills to think critically, solve problems and be creative irrespective of the situation they are in. The modality used to complete lessons is usually dictated by the teacher however in going forward, students’ interests, strengths and preferences will have to be considered and tapped into to hone their skills and maximize their potential. Students need to be autonomous, flexible, to practice to ask questions on the way to becoming the problem solvers and creative innovators they will need to be. Students need the necessary life skills which will guide how they approach their changing environment, learning skills to guide how they approach complex problems, and literacy skills to apply to everyday task.
Add an example of how this is applicable to students where
there is link between how students can identify, utilize and develop their skills and mindsets to adapt and create ideas in this technological savy and innovative era.
