SIMPLE SHOOTING BOARD

This jig is like a mini crosscut sled for your hand planes. When accuracy matters, it makes it easy to get right down to your line —
one shaving at a time.

THE BUILD
STEP 1: Start by cutting your plywood/mdf panels and squaring them up. Cut and
mill your hardwood to size. The thickness of the Fence (C) should be the height
of the thickest stock you plan to use on the Shooting Board.

STEP 2: Cut a 1/2” dado 3” in from

the edge 1/4” deep with a cross-
cut sled. Make sure to register
the edge you plan to register the
plane against to the fence of the
crosscut sled. 3”

STEP 3: Cut a 45° miter on one side

of your Fence (C) 2” from one
2”
edge.

STEP 4: Now cut a 1/2” wide dado in
the ence (C) 3/4” from one edge 3/4”
slightly over 1/2” deep.

STEP 5: Mill your Runner (D) so it

fits very snug in your dados.

STEP 6: Attach the Shoulder (B) to

the Body (A) by glueing them to-
gether with wood glue and coun-
tersinking 1/2” screws from the
bottom. Make sure they’re sitting
slightly beneath the surface but
careful not to blowout the other
side.

STEP 7: Attach the Runner (D) to the
body using a few dabs of wood-
glue and a few dabs of CA glue.
The Runner (D) should fit tight in
the dado so it shouldn’t take much
glue.

STEP 8: Chamfer the top edges of

the Runner (D) to make popping
the Fence (C) on easier.

STEP 9: Attach the Bench Hook (E)

to the bottom of the Shoulder (B)
with a little wood glue and some
countersunk 1-1/2” screws from
the top of the Body (A). Make sure
these are coutersunk below the
surface.

STEP 10: Give a quick sand and optional slight bevel on edges to soften them up.
Then put a paste wax finish on everything and it’s ready to use!
