Lucio Tan

To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to face many challenges and long

journeys, and that certainly was for Lucio Tan. His family were immigrants
from China that moved to the Philippines to try to gain a better fortune. He
wasn't able to finish his studies so he focused on his small scrap buy and sell
business, but it didn't work out. He decided to work as a janitor in a tobacco
factory. Due to his exposure of the tobacco, he began his own tobacco
company named 'Fortune Tobacco'. It became an instant success as his
company is the largest local manufacturer of cigarettes in 1980. Tan acquired
General Bank and Trust Co., then owned by the government, and it was
renamed to 'Allied Bank'. Due to his friendship with the past president,
Ferdinand Marcos Sr., the liquor ban was lifted so he opened 'Asia Brewery'.
The 'Asia Brewery' was able to compete against San Miquel Corp. Tan faced a
lot of problems after the Marcos regime. He had controversies about
corruption and tax invasion. He didn't give up there, he decided to grow more.
He acquired the Philippine Airline, Tanduay Holdings, Philippine National
Bank, Marco Asia Corporation, Eton Properties and University of the East. And
that is how Lucio Tan gain his success.
