What is word processing?

Word processing program is used to create digital or printed text

Documents. It enables the user to write articles, letter documents,
reports,Etc.
 Word processing did not develop due to computer
technology but it evolved from the need of the writers.
 In old times, books and manuscripts were written
manually using a writing quill. Like the holy bible, these
old books were produced through the handwriting of
monks.
 At around 1436, JOHANNES GUTENBERG, a German
goldsmith and printer, facilitated the monk’s work with
the introduction of his printing machine. This began bulk
printing or producing hundreds of copies of a written
material/document.
 The first major advancement from manual writing was the
use of TYPEWRITER invented by HENRY MILL, an
English engineer of the early 18th century.
 With the development of transistors and circuits, many
inventors designed electric typewriters that are more
efficient and ready to use.
 When computers came out and became more
affordable, word processing was integrated in computers.
With the use of computers, the typed documents can be
saved on a disk for future use.
Word processing is one of the most common uses of the computer. In
order to perform this task, you will need a special software known as a
word processor.

A word processor will enable you to create and save

documents containing texts, pictures, graphics, and other objects. You
can preview documents before printing, modifying, or editing saved
documents, and print documents on paper.

WORD PROCESSORS on computers are examples of

programs, applications, or software. With these Software, we
do not have to:
 Retype the entire document whenever it is needed.
 Check for typographical and grammatical errors.
 Improve accuracy and speed in reproducing documents
 In addition, text can be formatted in different styles to
enhance the overall appearance of the document.
 Today, word processors come with a speech-to-text feature
wherein all you need to do is to dictate the words, and the
computer will type them for you. The speech recognition
program is ideal for people who are unable to use the
standard methods of computer access.

WORD PROCESSING packages allow the user to

create, edit, store, and print text and graphic based
documents.

MICROSOFT WORD is one example of a word

processor. It provides all the word processing tools you
need to produce a presentable document or manuscript.
