What is
Automotive
Shop?
Automotive shop or Automotive Repair Shop means a company
principally engaged in the business of repairing damaged motor vehicles
or fixing mechanical/electrical parts on an automobile which becomes
inoperative, and shall also include reconditioning shops, radio/stereo
installation shops, undercoating shops and shops where additional
equipment is added to a vehicle to meet its design purposes.
History of
Automotive
Shop
The history of auto mechanics began in 1800s Europe with the creation
of the first cars. According to History.com, Europeans perfected the first
modern automobile by 1901. These late-1800s makers of cars can be
considered the first auto mechanics. They engineered, designed, and
built the first successful automobiles, launching a trade for likeminded
individuals in centuries to come.

• For opening the nuts, you need to use the wrenches.

• Wrenches are available in various models. There are

combination wrenches, adjustable wrenches, wrenches
of different sizes like ¼ inch, 3/8 inch, ¾ inch and ½
inches. These are the four most common sizes.
01 WRENCHES
• With wrenches, one can open any nut. Though for every
nut there is a particular wrench. Adjustable wrenches
can be adjusted to different sizes and thus the same
wrench can be used for different requirements.
TYPES OF WRENCHES

• Combination wrenches are just combination of

open and box ended. If you don't want to carry

COMBINATION both, just carry one.
WRENCHES
TYPES OF WRENCHES

• Open-ended wrenches contain two open ends of

differing diameters, and their primary use is to
loosen and tighten nuts and bolts that are

difficult to reach. 01.2

16 COMMON TOOLS

• A ratchet consists of bar or wheel with a set of angled

teeth that fits into the tooth allowing the movement in
any one direction.

• There are adjustable ratchets, stubby ratchets that can

02 RATCHET be flexed to adjust to unwind a nut in any corner. One
can easily understand how important these can be and
why adjustment is required.

16 COMMON TOOLS

• Pliers are available in various sizes and they are used to

open the nuts of various sizes. There are the sockets and
they come in various sizes that one need to select according
to the size of the nut one want to unwind.

• The best part about the pliers is that they can help you grip
the nuts in various angles and that is possible only through
03 PLIERS the pliers that are available as the automotive hand tools.

• Remember, practice and talent will help one to search the

best fitted pliers in least time and that is what is required
from an expert.
TYPES OF PLIERS

• Slip Joint are pliers in which the fulcrum may be

readily changed. The pivot point is another name
for the fulcrum. Because of the moveable
fulcrum, the jaws' size range can be simply
expanded. Majority of slip joint pliers have a
mechanism that allows the pivot point to slide 03.1 SLIP JOINT PLIERS

through one of its locations. When the pliers are

fully opened, this slipping occurs.
TYPES OF PLIERS

• Needle nose can do any task that involves

bending, shaping, or cutting wire requires a pair
of needle-nose pliers. They have features that set
them apart from other types of pliers, such as
03.2 NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS curved handles that provide both comfort and
control, as well as a clever, spring-action design
that helps prevent hand fatigue
TYPES OF PLIERS

• Diagonal pliers
The angled edge on the jaws of diagonal pliers
is designed to cut through thick wire. They're
quite durable and can even be used to trim
nails. As a result, they are valuable in both
engineering and manufacturing tasks. Side- 03.3 DIAGONAL PLIERS

cutting plier, wire cutter, diagonal cutting

plier, and flush cut plier are some of the other
names for it.
TYPES OF PLIERS

• Locking pliers also known as vise grip.

• This plier having a locking mechanism that
allows them to grip objects tightly and with
incredible strength. The precise moment at
which the plier’s transition from "open" to "lock"
may be adjusted, allowing you to lock them on a

variety of things, such as nuts and bolts. These
pliers are designed to lock the jaws in place, as
the name implies, making them ideal for
retaining stripped screws and bolts

GLOVES
- Handling engines and car parts that become extremely hot
is a safety hazard for automotive technicians. Engines and
car parts are also very dirty and even small cuts could
easily become infected if not kept clear of dirt and debris.
GOGGLES
- As mechanics or auto technicians, your employees are up
close and personal with many dangerous car parts and
liquids that could cause serious damage to their eyes in
the case of an accident. Wearing industry-specific safety
goggles is crucial to keeping them safe.
OVERALLS
- Lightweight, durable overalls are the ideal choice for
automotive workers’ uniforms, as they will keep dirt, hot
liquids, and other debris away from their bodies while still
being cool and comfortable to wear.
STURDY SHOES
- Tools and car parts will inevitably fall or be dropped during
the workday. Protecting your workers’ feet by providing
sturdy work shoes is essential to complete a quality
protective uniform.
