Topic: Belt And Chain Drive

Sub-topic: Belt Drive

Objectives (WALT):
1. Define drive mechanism
2. List examples of drive mechanism
3. Define belt drive
4. List the types of belt in shapes and arrangements

Definition of a drive mechanism: a drive mechanism is define as the

combination of machines or parts of a machine used in transmitting
power from one point to another

Types of drive mechanism

1. Belt and pulley drive

2. Chain drive and
3. Pulley drive

Definition of a belt drive: a belt drive is a strip of rubber or some

other flexible material that is looped over two or more pulleys

Types of belt drive by their shapes

1. Flat belt: the simpliest type is often made from leather or rub-
ber-coated fabric. The sheave surface is flat and smooth.

2. Synchronous or timing belt: this type of belt ride on pulley that
have mating grooves that the teeth on the belt seat.

3. V-belt: v-belt is trapezoidal in cross section and is used with

grooved pulleys.

DON’T DRAW

4. Circular belt: has a circular cross section and is used with

grooved pulleys

Types of belt and pulley arrangement

1. Open belt and pulley: an open belt connecting two pulleys
makes them run in the same direction.

DRAW THIS
2. Crossed belt and pulley: this changes the direction of pulleys,
that by crossed belt arrangement the pulleys moves in oppo-
site direction.

DRAW THIS

3. Variable belt and pulley: this can be used in an engine to

change the speed between a driver pulley and the driven pul-
ley without stopping the engine.

Uses of belt drive

1. Belt drive are used for smooth transmission of power between
shafts at a considerable distance
2. The sewing machine makes efficient use of the belt drive
(synchronous belts)
3. The automobile also makes use of the belt drive

ASSIGNMENT

Topic: Belt And Chain Drive

Sub-topic: Chain Drive

Objectives (WALT):

1. Define chain drive

2. Identify examples of machines using chain drive
3. Discover the advantages and disadvantages of chain drive

DEFINITION OF A CHAIN: A chain is a power transmission element

made as a series of pin-connected links.

When transmitting power between rotating shafts, the chain en-

gages mating toothed wheels called sprockets.

Types of chain drive

1. Roller chain drive:

ASSIGNMENT

List at least four types of machine where the following types of chains can be ap-
plied or used
