PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A. Background

The COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020 has led to a surge in the popularity of

gardening in the Philippines. This activity has been widely adopted as a means of alleviating the

adverse effects of the pandemic on the mental well-being of Filipinos (Green J, 2020). While

gardening for ornamental purposes in backyard spaces has been prevalent among the citizens, the

practice has gained further momentum in recent times. People have become increasingly aware

of the importance of gardening, not just for the sake of beautiful plants, but also for the

well-being of the planet and all living things. By absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen

into the atmosphere, plants play a crucial role in improving air quality, regulating the climate,

preserving soil, and conserving water resources.

The introduction of outdoor spaces and habitats for wildlife in urban areas has resulted in

an improved quality of life since gardening can help develop skills in communication and the

responsibility to compromise with others (Chowdhurry, M. 2019). Despite the daily exposure to

trees, plants, and flowers, we tend to overlook the benefits they offer and their potential to

improve our communities. Gardening, even with minimal effort, can create a significant

environmental impact that will leave a lasting legacy.

For this reason, students from BS PSYCHOLOGY 1B, have chosen to plant Vietnam

roses and portulaca to create an attractive garden with a refreshing ambiance. These plants are

easy to maintain as they require little pruning and watering, and are drought-tolerant, making

them ideal for hot climates such as the Philippines. Moreover, these are fast-growing,

low-maintenance plants that require minimal fertilizer and attract pollinators such as bees and

butterflies to the garden. This project aims to raise awareness about the benefits of gardening and

to encourage participation among the students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa, where

responsibility, knowledge, effort, and skills are shared, and creativity and the environment are

fostered. This will undoubtedly increase interest in the local environment among students.

B. Justification of the Project

Active participation of the population in activities such as planting flowers will increase

community ownership and self-sufficiency. In contrast to interventionist approaches that provide

services to people, these strategies entail active participation. Youth and community participation

is encouraged. Due to the extensive number of dead and ruined plants present within the school's

premises, the proponents opted to cultivate flowers as a means of enhancing the school's

ambiance.

Planting can enhance the appearance and facilities of the school while creating a pleasant

environment that can positively influence the learning process. Additionally, it can encourage

students to engage in outdoor activities and develop healthy habits by tending to plants. This

approach is sustainable as this promotes individual and societal environmental responsibility.

Environment:

Improve the school environment: Enhancing the school environment can be achieved by

introducing greenery such as trees, flowers, and other plants, which can contribute to creating a

comfortable and inviting atmosphere for students, professors, staff and visitors (Health and

Well-being Benefits of Plants, n.d.).

Moreover, planting in schools can have a positive impact on the environment by reducing

the carbon footprint of the school and aiding in the fight against climate change. Through

6
PAMANTASAN NG LUNGSOD NG MUNTINLUPA

COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE
NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM (NSTP)

planting of trees, students can contribute to the reduction of carbon dioxide levels in the

atmosphere, resulting in a healthier environment for all.

Educational:

Foster a sense of responsibility and stewardship: By planting and taking care of trees and

other plants, students can develop an attachment to their growth and welfare. It can promote a

sense of accountability and a mindset of being a guardian of the environment (Forstall

Interiorscapes, n.d.).

Provide hands-on learning opportunities: Planting provides a valuable practical learning

experience for students. Through the process of planting and maintaining trees and other plants,

students can gain knowledge about biology, ecology, and other interconnected subjects.

Teach important life skills: planting can instill essential life abilities like collaboration,

analytical thinking, and finding solutions. These proficiencies can be advantageous for students

not only in their academic pursuits but also in their personal lives.

Health:

Incorporating plants into one's surroundings can establish a more pleasant and tranquil

atmosphere, resulting in an increase in happiness and a decrease in stress levels. The existence of

plants can elevate one's perspective on life, offering both aesthetic satisfaction and a heightened

sense of contentment.

Similarly, the introduction of gardening programs in educational institutions can offer

pupils a variety of benefits beyond academic advancement. It can provide them with practical,

interactive learning experiences that nurture their interest in environmentalism and sustainability.

7

UNIVERSITY ROAD NBP RESERVATION POBLACION MUNTINLUPA CITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE
NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM (NSTP)

By participating in gardening activities, students can deepen their understanding of the natural

world and the importance of preserving it.

Hence, implementing gardening activities in schools can provide diverse and substantial

advantages, including educational opportunities, promoting well-being, and contributing to

environmental conservation. As a result, it is an initiative that should be encouraged and

supported.

C. Benefits derived from the project

The proposed project will furnish the understanding of the students on how exposure to

nature enhances cognitive function, reinforces memory and discipline. Immersing oneself in a

natural environment, such as the outdoors, can aid in enhancing attention span and memory

retention (Park, et. al, 2021). Moreover, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa (PLMun)

community will experience a more vibrant ambiance with the implementation of our project. The

presence of flowers and an aesthetically pleasing view in close proximity has been shown to

positively affect individuals' moods and reduce the likelihood of depression caused by stress.

Students, professors, faculty members and even passersby will experience a boost in positive

energy levels that could potentially brighten their day. The presence of flowers and visually

appealing plants has been shown to promote feelings of comfort and relaxation, thus aiding the

PLMun community in starting their day positively and in a relaxed manner. Moreover, the

cultivation of flowering plants and the growth of greenery not only enhance the aesthetics of the

campus, but also reduce air pollution levels enabling individuals to breathe fresher air while

inside the campus.

8

UNIVERSITY ROAD NBP RESERVATION POBLACION MUNTINLUPA CITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE
NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM (NSTP)

Undoubtedly, the project is poised to offer numerous advantages through the

incorporation of a vibrant, nature-filled field within the campus, which could assist in alleviating

stress among many individuals. Flowers are expected to have a significant positive impact on the

ecology and environment, as they absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. Furthermore, they aid

in soil retention, reducing instances of erosion and flooding. The inclusion of flower planting in

any landscape can provide a burst of color and visual appeal, making outdoor settings more

attractive. The inclusion of flower planting in any landscape can provide a burst of color and

visual appeal, making outdoor settings more appealing. As nature should be conserved, the

implementation of this project on the campus is aimed at achieving that objective.

D. Coverage

The proposed project, entitled “Green Steps: Flourishing the Staircase Garden of

the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa”, will cover the staircase located at the university's

covered court, which students will enhance through planting various plants, building fences, and

adding accessories. It is conceivable that implementing this measure could lead to a reduction in

pollution levels on the campus, whilst concurrently affording the benefits of a refreshing supply

of air and visually appealing surroundings.

METHODOLOGY

This section aims to present an introduction to the materials that are to be utilized in the

project, along with a detailed procedure for executing the project.

In order to prepare the project site, the students of BS Psychology 1B will engage in a

series of tasks. Firstly, the students will undertake the cleaning of the gym staircase. Following

this, the students will proceed to dig holes for the construction of the fence. Additionally, the

students are entrusted with the responsibility of procuring the necessary materials for the

projects. Once all the materials have been acquired, the next stage of the project will involve the

actual construction of the fence. The final phase of the project will entail the planting of Vietnam

Rose and Portulaca at the project site.

The list below shows the materials that will be used in the project:

● Trowels and shovels will be used to dig holes for planting the seedlings.

● Soil is where the plants will grow.

● Bluegrass lawn which will be planted in the staircase to add texture in the garden.

● Flowerpots will hold the plants in place.

● Tires will also serve planters to keep the soil warm and provide ample room for root

growth.

● Vietnam Rose and Portulaca Grandiflora are flowers under the genus Portulaca which

are both succulent flowering plants that will be planted in flower pots and tires.

● Wood pallets will be made into fences.

● Nails are utilized to attach the wooden pallets to one another in order to build fences.

● Pebble stones will be used to pave and cover the soil.

In conclusion, it is evident that the cost of the landscaping supplies required for college

students enrolled in the National Service Training Program (NSTP; BS Psychology, 1B) is

significant. We can see in the table that the necessary expenses in Table 1 are the plastic, which

is worth Php 39.00 since three are purchased. In Table 2, we can see the necessary purchases and

expenses for landscaping, which includes: flower pot that costs Php 100.00 per pot, Portulaca

Grandiflora that costs Php 50.00 each pot, Vietnam Rose that costs Php 50.00 each pot, small

tires that cost Php 50.00 per piece, big tires that cost Php 80.00 per piece, nail that costs Php

150.00 per kilogram, soil that costs Php 100.00 per sack, Bluegrass lawn that costs Php 200.00

per square meter, pebble that cost Php 100.00 per kilogram, wood pallets that are 3 ft in size

costs Php 120.00 and lastly, wood pallets that are 4 ft in size costs Php 350.00. On the table, an

anticipated total price of Php 6,569 for college students to spend is listed.

The students first establish a strategy in order to proceed step-by-step and complete the

task of creating budgetary requirements right away. Prior to making any purchases for the

proposed project, they also made sure that their budget would allow them to do so because of the

possibility that expenditures could surpass the estimated income and produce financial shortages

in the absence of allocation constraints. The process of organizing the budgetary requirement is a

crucial step and is taken keenly by the students, which in turn taught them the skills of proper

allocation of resources as well as time and financial management.
