Topic: Evidences of Evolution

Subject: Science (Biology)

Date & Time: April 03, 2023 & 9:30 – 3:30 Pm

Grade & Section: Grade 10

Teacher: Ryan R. Naldo

I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, the learners would be able to:
1. Identify and differentiate between direct and indirect evidences of evolution.
2. Explain how fossil records, comparative anatomy, and genetic information provide
evidence for evolution;
3. Compare homologous, analogous, and vestigial structures and analyze their significance
in evolutionary history; and
4.   Identify the effect of gene mutation on the evolution of the species.
A. CONTENT STANDARDS
The learners demonstrate the understanding of:
1. how evolution through natural selection can result in biodiversity

B. PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The learners shall be able to:
1. The learners shall be able to: write an essay on the importance of adaptation as a
mechanism for the survival of a species

C. LEARNING COMPENTENCIES
The learners should be able to:
1. explain how fossil records, comparative anatomy, and genetic information provide
evidence for evolution;

Prayer
Please stand up let us pray In the name of the Father….
____ please lead the prayer Amen

Greetings
Good morning, Class! Good morning, sir Ryan, Good morning,
Please, be seated. Classmates.

Thank you, sir Ryan!

Attendance
Before we start our discussion class let me Okay sir.
check your attendance first

When your name is called you say present. Yes sir.

A. Before the lesson
Motivation
Who among you is here has an idea about Evolution? Some students raise their hands.
Can you share something about what are evidences
of evolution and Do you believed that humans are The students share idea.
came from the apes?

Engage

Okay class, group yourselves into 5.

Yes sir!
I want you to answer this preliminary activity about
our lesson for today. All you need to do is identify
what organisms is that, you will only need to guest (Students finish answer)
those organisms to its name, it could be Carnivore,
Herbivore and Omnivore according to the teacher’s
showing a picture.

Very good, I guess you all class are got the correct
answer.
EXPLORE

Okay class, I have here a short video for to know Okay sir!
what is Evidences of Evolution specially to the evolve
of one organism.

(Video playing)
(Student answer)
So now class, what is all about Evidences of
Evolution?
Very Good!

B. LESSON PROPER
Explain

What is Evolution? (Student listen)

 Evolution is the change in inherited traits over

successive generations in populations of
organisms.

 the change in the physical characteristics of a Students copy on their notebook.

species over numerous generations and it
depend on the process of natural selection.
The theory of evolution is based on the idea
that all species are related and progressively
changes over the time.
 This allowed organisms to adapt and survive
in their environment.

Evidences of Evolution
1. Fossil Records
2. Comparative Anatomy
3. Embryonic Development
4. Genetic Information

Students copy on their notebook.

Fossil Records
 Fossil records are traces of organisms that
lived in the past and were preserved by
natural process or catastrophic events.
 Fossils document the existence of now -extinct
past species that are related to present day
species.

There are 6 types of fossil records but I pick 2 types

of fossil records. Students copy on their notebook.

Types of fossil records

1. Imprints
2. Compressions
Imprints
 Imprints are shallow externals molds left by
animal or plant tissues with little or no organic
materials present.

Students copy on their notebook.

Compressions
 Compression fossils are animal or plant tissues
preserved in sedimentary rock and is formed
with more organic material.

 How are the ages of fossils determined?

1. Relative Dating – the age of rock is compared

to the other rock layers.

2. Radiometric Dating – method used to

determine the age of rocks using the decay of
radioactive isotopes of carbon-14 which is
present in rocks when the organism died.
 FOSSIL RECORDS (evolution of Horse)

Comparative Anatomy
 Study of the similarities and differences in the
structures of different species.

3 Types of structures
1. Homologous Structures
2. Analogous Structures
3. Vestigial Structures

Homologous Structures – body part of

organisms that may perform different functions
but are of the
same origin.
Comparative Anatomy (homologous structures)

Divergent Evolution – common ancestors

(RELATED) adapt different traits

Analogous Structures – body part of organisms

that may perform the same function but are of
the

different origins

Comparative Evolution of ECHOLOCATION

Vestigial Structures – body part that are

useless or left over from a previous ancestor in
which they were useful.
In animals’ examples

In Human examples

Embryonic Development
 The portion of the life cycle that begins just
after fertilization.
 Many organisms have similar embryos,
supporting the idea of common ancestors.
Genetic Information – small mutations or changes
in the DNA eventually lead to the evolution of new
species.

 GENETIC INFORMATION
V. EVALUATE

Teacher’s activity Student’s activity

ELABORATE

Another activity, the same group. Answer this

question. Students answer the question presented in
PPT.

EVALUATE

TRUE OR FALSE
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is correct
and Write False if the statement is FALSE. Lastly
Erasures are not allowed.

1. Some extinct species had traits that were Students answer on their 1 whole sheet of
transitional between major groups of organisms. paper.
Their existence confirms that species are not
fixed but can evolve into other species over
time.

2. Fossils provide solid evidence that organisms

from the past are not the same as those found
today, and fossils show a progression of
evolution.

3. Is evolution a prove fact that both widely

observable in laboratory and natural process.

4. the person who studied evolution are those

who called Evolutionist.

5. Darwin are the one who studied evolution

Instruction: Identify each organism based on the

picture shown and give each a short sentences.
