Statistical Experiment

Suppose there is a disease spreading in the USA that has infected many people. A cure is needed for all who are
infected, but practically, not all can be examined. How can a cure be discovered without examining every infected
person?

A statistical experiment can be used to learn more about the disease in search for a cure.

A statistical experiment is an experiment conducted on a sample taken from a population. By measuring and
analyzing observable variables from the sample, scientists can make statistical inferences about certain
characteristics of the target population. The two main methods used to derive statistical inference are estimation
and hypothesis testing. We will learn more about them later in the course.
