Testing Results
Here we will highlight the results of the WA270-7 testing versus the Caterpillar 930K, John Deere 544K, and Volvo L70G Tier 4
Interim Models.

We will also step through the each machine and compare it directly to the WA270-7. In an attempt to make the information as
concise as possible, the machines are broken down into the following areas:

0 – Testing Results and Direct Comparisons (this section)

OVERVIEW

1 – Machine Overview
2 – Engine
3 – Work Equipment & Visibility
4 – Cab & Controls

These sections can be taken individually for a quick refresher or as a whole for a comprehensive understanding of how the WA270-7
compares to the competition.

Testing Circumstances
The testing occurred from June 30, 2014 to July 18, 2014 using one WA270-7, one Caterpillar 930K, one Volvo L70G, and one John
Deere 544K. All machines were Tier 4 Interim. Each machine was tested under the same actual job conditions multiple times at a
Komatsu testing facility by trained Komatsu personnel.

WA270-7 WA270-7 930K 544K L70G

Testing Results
The WA270-7 was tested against its primary competitors in both V-Cycle and Load and Carry applications.

In V-cycle testing, the WA270-7 was found to use less fuel than both the CAT 930K and John Deere 544K while being virtually equal
to the Volvo L70G.

Low fuel consumption combined with quick acceleration and good bucket fill factor meant that the Komatsu has the most efficient
(tons/gal) loader based on these test results.
TESTING OVERVIEW

During Load and Carry testing, the WA270-7 performed extremely well against its competition.

In this case, the CAT 930K showed better efficiency than the Komatsu due to its higher production (tons/hr) and slight better fuel
consumption for better overall efficiency.

Every attempt was made during these tests to ensure that all haul distances, material densities and conditions were identical for
each machine.

Overall Operator Feedback for Competitor Machines:

 Combining feedback from all operators, the Volvo L70G was rated higher than the WA270-7. Volvo has an advantage in
production, however there are counterpoints when selling against this machine.

 The John Deere 544K was smooth and easy to control, however it did not rate as well as the Komatsu in the areas shown.
OPERATOR FEEDBACK - OVERALL

 CAT’s 930K HST was found by some operators to be more difficult to control.

Working Performance Operator Feedback for Competitor Machines:
OPERATOR FEEDBACK – WORKING PERFORMANCE

Volvo L70G
 Volvo’s power along with many operator’s familiarity with dual lever controls were a favorite among the testers. Some testers,
however, felt the machine may have been a little jerky, possibly due to its high torque.
 The L70G has a lower cross member than the WA270-7. The different positions create different lines of sight to the bucket or
forks while at different heights.
 Testers felt that fine control and leveling were more difficult as compared with other machines.

John Deere 544K

 Testers commented that the John Deere was easy to operate and felt very smooth.
 Some operators thought that it was very easy to spin the tires while digging in the pile with the 544K.
 Easy steering force meant that V-cycle loading was quick with reduced operator fatigue.

CAT 930K
 CAT scored poorly in this category due to its boom and bucket cushion, which prevents rap-out of the bucket. This does
increase operator comfort, however it can be hard to clean the bucket.
 The Performance Series bucket on the 930K was easy to fill. It had significant carry back (likely due to the small radius of the
bucket curvature), causing the testers to clean it out with shovels twice during the testing.
 The 930K has a fabricated cross-tube with a larger cross sectional area than that of the WA270-7.

Travel Performance Operator Feedback for Competitor Machines:
OPERATOR FEEDBACK – TRAVEL PERFORMANCE

Volvo L70G
 Volvo’s power and speed rated high in this category.
 The L70G had good uphill acceleration.
 However, the testers felt Volvo had some time lag when shifting from Forward to Reverse.
 The testers also felt that the WA270-7 was better suited for fine control and leveling operations.

John Deere 544K

 John Deere was again very smooth, with quick acceleration.

Caterpillar 930K
 In an effort to mimic a TC’s ability to roll, the 930K’s first generation HST did not have the dynamic braking effect of the
Komatsu HST loaders.

Testing Results
Operator Comfort Operator Feedback for Competitor Machines:
OPERATOR FEEDBACK – OPERATOR COMFORT

Volvo L70G
 All switches and machine controls are located on the right hand side A-pillar.
 The rear view camera is mounted high on the right side of the cab, as opposed to
Komatsu’s which are mounted low, near the monitor panel.
 There were several operator complaints on the Volvo door, which opens forward.

John Deere 544K

 Deere’s display, on the right side A-pillar, was more compact than the competitive
machines, making it harder to see the machine functions and status.
 Deere’s push button system, including push button start and stop, could be confusing as it
used a series of LED lights to indicate if a feature is ON or OFF.
 The mono-lever felt smaller than the competitive mono-levers, and the FNR switch as
mounted on the front, for use with the operator’s middle fingers.
 The 544K uses a pedal to tilt steering column, allowing the operator to easily position the
wheel with both hands.
 The testers also noticed that the Deere had a hydraulic noise or whine in the cab, which
was more noticeable than some of the other competitive machines.

Caterpillar 930K
 The CAT 930K had a very nice, car like interior, with plush seats.
 CAT’s push button system was somewhat similar to John Deere’s. However this system was
found to be cumbersome and confusing by some operators.

13
 The testers also noticed a steering noise in the cab, which was more noticeable than some
of the other competitive machines.

DIRECT COMPARISONS – CROSS MEMBER

Shown here is a front view of the cross members of all 4 machines. These pictures are to scale and aligned by the top of their
tires (as shown by the dotted red line).

From this view it is easy to see the differences in location and size of the cross members. The cross member is largely responsible
for the forward visibility, especially when using a coupler and forks.

A lower cross member, like Volvo, allows the operator to see over it when the boom is lowered. However as the boom is raised the
cross member can quickly rise into the operator’s line of sight.

Komatsu’s cast cross member is oval shaped to reduce its cross-sectional area and make it appear smaller to the operator. CAT for

15
example uses a fabricated cross member which has a much larger cross-section.

Shown here is a profile view of the work equipment and buckets. These pictures are to scale and aligned by the center of the
wheel as shown by the dotted red line.

From this view, the difference in the linkage styles can be seen. Note that Komatsu, CAT, and Deere all use an over-under style
linkage while Volvo does not.

Volvo’s Torque Parallel linkage has additional components that a typical Z-bar style does not.

Note also the severe angle of CAT’s bucket cylinder, which forces the rod higher into the air, and into the operator’s line of sight.

DIRECT COMPARISONS – WORK EQUIPMENT

Shown here is a profile view of the buckets. These pictures are to scale and aligned by the bottom of the cutting edge as shown by
the dotted red line.

One of the first things to be identified here is Cat’s Performance Series bucket, which has a flat bottom. This supposed gives
better pile penetration. Note also Cat’s curved side wall which they say further increases bucket productivity. However, this
creates a void in the corners of the bucket which could loose material.

Note also that both the WA270-7 and 544K are using JRB buckets. These are sloped floor buckets that have consistently performed
well over the years.

Testing Results
Komatsu’s 3rd Generation HST was preferred to CAT’s 1st Generation HST. Komatsu also comes with
standard Max, Auto, and S-mode.

Komatsu’s Variable Speed Control allows the operator to set the maximum travel speed while in 1st
speed range.
CONCLUSIONS

All OEM’s offer a linkage which has both parallel lift and good break out forces, however, Deere also
has a Z-bar. Make sure you have an apples-to-apples comparison.

Volvo’s TP linkage and cast coupler offer excellent visibility while forks are low or on the ground.
However, visibility may be reduced at higher picking levels.

John Deere’s Quad-cool package is well received in agricultural (AG) applications. Remember that
this also moves the engine further forward and reduces the machines tipping loads. Komatsu also
offers perforated screens for high debris applications.

forward, unlike the dynamic braking of the WA270-7.
 Dynamic braking slows and stops the machine when the
operator is not pressing the accelerator

35
WA270-7 930K

Machine Overview
 CAT is on their 1st Generation HST, while Komatsu is on its 3rd.

 The Fusion Coupler locks the attachment very tightly, but may get stuck and can only pick up CAT
Fusion attachments.
CONCLUSION

 If in a competitive situation, note Komatsu’s advantages in stability.
