LORD OF THE FLIES - SUMMARY

Chapter 1
The story begins with the boy with fair__________ climbing down the rocks. A voice behind him calls out for
him to wait. This voice comes from a fat boy who wears_________  or glasses. The first boy introduces himself

The two boys are on an ________with no___________because their_______ was shot down. Ralph, who

Chapter 2

After Ralph, Jack, and________return from their exploration, Ralph explains to the rest of the
boys that they are indeed on an __________ island. _______ tells the boys about the need for
hunters and the story of the ______that they encountered.

Realizing that there needs to be order,_______ tells the boys that there needs to be rules
when speaking. The boy who holds the _________is the only one allowed to talk. And the only one

snake-thing; he later calls it a __________ The boys laughed at first, but later they sense some fear.

Chapter 4
The chapter begins with three __________ the generic title for the smaller boys, building sand

the biggest of them; and Johnny, who is well built.

Out of the forest runs ________and Maurice, who have just been relieved from their duty at the

yelled at for doing this, but now with very little regret, he runs into the pool. ________ stays behind

transparencies, little creatures from the __________. He starts to become fascinated with controlling
the movement of these. While ________’s attention is on the transparencies, ________ starts to

About ten yards behind him, ________ calls to Roger. He follows Jack and finds Sam, ______, Bill, and
Jack putting________ on their faces. They are going on a hunt A problem is that _____and Eric are
neglecting their duty of the _______. This later proves disastrous because Ralph sees a ________, but
there is no _________ for the ship to see them.

Chapter 5

_______ decides that the meeting should be all business and not______. _________has grown
disgusted with the way he has been living. He dislikes flicking the tangled ________out of his

Before ________begins to talk, he thinks that a chief really needs to be able to think, and the problem
is he cannot think as well as _______can. Almost everyone sits in the ________except for
_______who stands outside the triangle to show his disapproval.

________goes over the things the boys have decided in assemblies and have not gone through with.
The first thing Ralph mentions is how the boys decided to bring ______up and put it in the _______
shells, but now they don’t. And the boys go down to the river to _______. The second thing he lists is
the failure to build the ______. He says that all the boys helped on the first one. But only four boys
helped on the second one. And only he and _______worked on the third one, which is unfair. Then
________complains about how the boys are no longer using the rocks beyond the bathing pool as
their _______. It was the best place to have as a toilet because the tide cleans it up. But now the boys
seem to go everywhere, which is disgusting because the littluns suffer from ________. _________
tells the boys if they are suffering from diarrhea to stay away from the _______. Then _______ says
that they should die before they let the______ go out again._________’s last command is that they
don’t make a ________anywhere but on the ________.

The group gets bored and restless with _______ but he tries to say one last thing; he tries to talk
about the _________and fear that has taken over the island. _______ stands up and tells the littluns
that they started all this stuff about beasts. He says that the littluns are nothing but a bunch of
crybabies and sissies. He says that if there is a ________he will hunt it. _________ tries to convince
the boys that there is no such things as beasties or ________and that science can prove it. Then a
littlun by the name of __________stands up and talks about how he saw something moving in the
trees. As it turns out, it wasn’t a ________. It was ________going to his secret place in the forest.

Next_________stands up. He is too timid to give his name. Percival starts to cry and the rest of the
littluns join him. _______ gets them to stop crying by falling off the twister into the grass. ________
finally tells the group that he thinks the _________comes out of the ________. After this, Maurice
talks about how his father once told him there is a ________that can eat a whale. The boys truly get
frightened when _______speaks up and says that maybe there is a ___________and maybe it is the
boys themselves. One of the boys interprets what ____________said as meaning that there are
ghosts. The group basically breaks into chaos over the mention of them.

_______ grabs the _______and says that he didn’t vote for ghosts._______ interrupts him, and Ralph
tries to gain order. But ________says there is no need for rules and that he is tired of Ralph always
taking ___________’s side.

The meeting breaks up and ________tells Ralph that if he gives up, _________ will want to hurt Ralph
but won’t be able to. But Jack will attack the next best thing and his name is_______

Chapter 6

As  _____Piggy, and Ralph go to sleep, there is a ________ in the air about ten miles above them.
Although no one is awake to see it, a _________ is shot down. And afterwards a man strapped to a
______________comes down to the island.
Sam and __________almost let the _______ go out. Once they get it going again, one of them comments that
had it gone out, ________ would have been angry. Then they mock ______and a previous school teacher. As
they are sitting by the fire, ________ sees something and calls Sam’s attention to it. Once they both see the
dead man on a _____________, they go running to Ralph. They tell the boys that they saw the __________,
and they embellish and say they saw the claws and _________ of the beast. Ralph, Jack, and ________decide
what to do. _______ wants to hunt it right away. ____________ wants to wait until they have the ________
going. And ________ wants to live on the platform. ________ suggest checking the _________rock, where they
haven’t been before.
When they reach it, ________ goes alone to explore. ______ quickly follows because he couldn’t let
_______have all the glory. Once ________ sees the cave, he tells _______that it would be great for a
_______.Ralph thinks it is a bad idea because there is not much fresh water there. While ______explains how
to use the boulder as a weapon, _________ realizes that there is no signal.

 Chapter 7

_________realizes that_________is thinking about home. He tells _________ that he knows that he
will make it back all right. ________ thinks _________is batty, or crazy, and asks him sarcastically if he
has a _______in his pocket.

On their way to the _________, the boys hunt for _______. ________ gets his first experience at
hunting, and he enjoys it. He is able to get his ________into the pig. _________ is injured slightly by
the boarbecause he waited too long to put his spear into him.________ tells _________to suck on the
wound to make it better. 

After this, the boys get excited and start to pretend they are hunting a ______. They use _________
as the ______.The boys get too involved and Robert ends up getting ______. _______ and Ralph play
it off as if it were nothing but a game. ________ says that he once got badly hurt while playing______
, or rugby. ______ says next time they should have a ___________play the pig.

It is getting late, and ________still wants to make it to the_______to restart the ______. __________
suggests that they should get back to Piggy. ________ volunteers to go alone to Piggy and tell him
that the rest won’t be back until later.

_______and Ralph keep pushing each other to go up the ___________in the dark. _______, Eric, and
the rest of the boys all leave Jack, Ralph, and ________by themselves. They are not scared, they say,
but rather tired.

Chapter 8
After Jack and _______come back, _______can hardly believe that there really is a__________up in
the____________. Jack meanly tells _________to go check for himself, hoping he will get hurt. _________
explains to ____________that no one could fight the ________ He says that even _________would hide if the
beast came after them. __________ goes on to say that the hunters are nothing but boys with __________and
that they are no good against the ________.
_________is insulted and takes the _________and calls a meeting. He first tells the boys that they did see the
____________. Then he tells them that ________ thinks the hunters are cowards because they ran away from
the boar and the __________. And third, he tells the boys that __________says things like ______________;
therefore, he isn’t a proper____________. ___________then calls for a vote to see who thinks
__________shouldn’t be chief anymore. No one openly votes against Ralph. This hurts ________, and he says
that he is not going to _______any longer.

After ______runs from the platform, Ralph and the rest sit depressed. __________ stands and suggests that

When ________and his tribe raid the beach for fire, Jack is stark naked except for his belt and ________.He

the boys.

 _________wakes up from his fainting spell. His nose bled, but the ___________are more interested

from the sight, he frees the ___________ lines from the rock. He then looks at the island and sees
that most, if not all, of the boys are on ________’s end of the _________.

Because Ralph and _________are hungry and curious, they go visit _________’s party. Once there
Jack is sitting on a log. When he speaks, he waves his _________.He commands some boys to give
Ralph and _________some _________.

After the boys have eaten all that they want, ___________ asks who is going to join his tribe. Ralph
says that he has ___________. And _________says that his hunters will protect the boys from the
____________. Jack points out to Ralph that he doesn’t have the ___________and if he did have it, it
wouldn't matter on this side of the ___________.

During Jack and Ralph’s argument about who should be ___________, Jack told the boys to do their
dance. There is __________ and lightning. The boys are chanting, “Kill the _______! Cut his
__________!Spill his _______!” Out from the forest comes _________crying out that the

Chapter 10
 ________learns from Piggy that only a few___________and Samneric are left. The rest have joined
_________’s tribe.________ is upset about the murder of _________the night before._________ tries
to persuade _________that they weren’t involved in the __________because they were on the
outside of the circle. He also tries to suggest that maybe __________was just pretending, but
________ is sure that he wasn’t. Piggy tells Ralph that they cannot tell ________about the dance.
__________ however, also try to cover up their involvement in the __________.They tell Ralph and
Piggy that they left the feast early before the dance. But _________somehow has a scratch on his
forehead and__________has a split lip.

When________approaches the ________Rock, he is challenged._________, who is the guard, asks

him who he is even though he can obviously see who it is. He tells __________ that _________has
commanded that he challenge everyone. __________ tells the him that he couldn’t have stopped him
if he tried, but Robert draws his attention to a___________with a log jammed under it. He indicates
that he could have smashed him. This really impresses __________; he says, “He’s a
proper_________isn’t he?”

Robert changes the subject and tells _______ that ________ is going to beat up __________for
making him angry. He tells __________that the boy has been tied up for hours. 

_______tells the boys that they still need to be careful about the__________. He implies that the
beast came disguised as _________, but that they did not_________ it. They still need to offer it
the__________if they go hunting. Then he tells the boys that they will go hunting the following day.
_________ asks Jack how they are going to light a__________. _________ tells him that they will just
take the _______ from the other boys again.

However, when _______and his boys show up at ________’s camp, there is no fire. There is no

the forest carrying a headless ______ and asks _________ what he wants. _________ tells him that
he wants the fire and the ________. He calls Jack a _________. Because of this, Jack starts to
________ with Ralph using ________ as sabers. They eventually stop fighting. ________ reminds
_________ that they are there to get his _______. ________ tells his boys to capture ____________.

_________ releases the rock from the top of the castle rock and kills __________. And _________
throws his spear  at __________, injuring him. After this the rest of the tribe starts throwing spears,
and _________ runs away into the forest.

Chapter 12

_________ decides that he cannot stay on the platform by himself. He starts back toward _________
Rock. On the way, he meets the _________ of the Flies and knocks the ________ off the stick and
takes the ________ with him as a weapon. When _______ reaches ________Rock, he talks to
______________ who are guarding the entrance. They have joined ________’s tribe because
_______  tortured them. They warn _________ that the following day all the boys are going to hunt
him. They tell _________ that they are going to sweep the island and find him. They tell him that
________ has sharpened a _______ at both ends. 

__________tells the twins that he will hide in the thicket near where_________ was killed. He asks
the ________ to keep the hunt away from him. One of the twins gives ________a piece
of __________ before he leaves. 

All does not go as planned, however._______________ are once again tortured by ________. During
this bout of torture they give up ________’s hiding spot. __________ and Roger drop big rocks on the
spot and eventually try to smoke________ out with________. __________runs out, trying to decide
whether he should _______ or climb a tree.

Because the boys had set the island on ________, a British Naval _______ arrives to rescue the boys.
When _______ comes out of the forest, he sees an _________ The naval officer asks who is boss, and
_________ says he is. The officer passes off what was happening on the island as a bit of “[f]un and
_________.“
