Newspeak Writing Activity

The main object of Newspeak is to eliminate the majority of the words in the English

language that were invented to help describe the base word the main word came from. For

instance: The word knife is a noun. The verb cut was invented to repress the action of the knife

and its movements through an object. Newspeak says that you must eradicate the word cut, and

add the necessary tense to the base word knife. “I am going to knife this bread.” The word sharp

was invented to represent the knife or pointy object and the condition of its blade/point.

Newspeak says that the word sharp should be replaced by knifeful.”

To create an adjective, you must ad -ful to the base word, as seen above. To create and

adverb, you must add -wise to the base word. Example: Speed is the noun, speedful is the

adjective, and speed wise is the adverb.

Adjective: He was speedful - meaning, he was fast

Adverb: He speedwise runned down the hall. Runned being the past tense verb form of

run.

If you want to say really good, you would say plusgood, really, really good = plusplusgood, et

cetera.

Your job is to create fifteen Newspeak words that could be used in today’s society.
