One of the most important steps I want to take towards establishing rules and
expectations is the following. I'll make sure I build a connection with students so that they don't
feel like I'm attacking them. Instead i will prioritize building a connection where the students feel
like i truly want to help them and want what is best for them,
“Don't accuse the child of anything. Act as if you do care, even if you have the opposite
feeling at that moment. The student will usually become disarmed because she might be
Making a child feel scared of you isn't what will help them correct their behavior and after
observations i have noticed that it causes more defiance and causes the children to feel more
anger and hatred towards the instructor. I think when a student feels cared about they will let
their guard down a little and build empathy towards the teacher and other students.
Another important step is Allowing students to give their input on the class rules. I would
like to allow the students to do things like create class rules which will help them feel like they
have a sense of place and a voice in my classroom. Doing things like allowing them to self
assess/reflect. I would like to create a comfortable environment where students are able to voice
their concerns and come together as a community to come up with what will best benefit the
classroom environment.
I think another important step to take is maintaining consistency with rules and expected
behavior. I would set a day at the beginning of the year to practice my expected behaviors, as we
go through these behaviors I would also let them know why these behaviors and rules are
important and how they maintain our classroom safe and productive. I think it's important to not
just tell the students “no” but give them a talk on why we do what we do so that they don't only

memorize the no but instead learn to understand cause and effect and how our actions affect our
outcomes.
“Effective communication at any grade level means clearly posting your expectations and
It is important to keep rules consistent and have frequent reminders of these rules. Making sure
that we don't expect the students to memorize everything and then get upset when they have
questions they genuinely didn't know or remember. Making sure that rules are always accessible
is a great way to make sure students have this reference they can look back on which gets rid of
excuses as well.
In conclusion I think the best way to make sure you establish good classroom
expectations and rules is to make sure you provide an environment for students to feel like they
matter and what they are doing matters. Making sure that everything you do is thinking about
what best benefits the students. Making sure your classroom environment feels safe and
welcoming. I think it's important to build empathy in classrooms and to maintain that security
