1.1 General
The Client, M/s Lahore Smart City (LSC), intends to construct a Smart Junior School
in Lahore Smart City (LSC), Kala Shah Kaku (KSK). The Smart School will include a
basement, a ground + 4 floors with the provision for addition of two floors.
Earlier, Berkeley Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. executed geotechnical investigations for the
aforementioned project by drilling of two exploratory boreholes, reaching a depth of 10
meters below the existing ground level (EGL), utilizing the hand auger cum
light percussion technique. Later on, the design of School building was revised
by adding the provision of single basement, ground + 4 to 6 floors. M/s Berkeley
Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. (BAL) has been awarded a contract to conduct
supplementary geotechnical investigations at the designated site. Keeping in
view the new proposed building configuration three additional boreholes were
executed using straight rotary technique.
The entire fieldwork was carried out under the fulltime supervision of site
geologists/supervisors of M/s Berkeley Associates (Pvt.) Ltd.
The fieldwork for these geotechnical investigations was carried out from May 12, 2023
to May 14, 2023.
- Drilling of total five (05) exploratory boreholes; two (02) down to 15.5m (100 ft)
depth and one (01) down to 30.5m (100 ft) depth using hydraulic feed straight
1.3 Methodology
Field investigations were carried out in accordance with the scope of work. The
exploratory borings were advanced using rotary wash boring technique. Standard
Penetration Tests (SPTs) were performed in all the boreholes in accordance with
ASTM D 1586.
Soil samples were collected from designated depths from each borehole for
identification and subsequent laboratory testing. Selected soil samples were subjected
to various laboratory tests for classification, estimation of strength and chemical
characteristics.
The report has been compiled based on the geotechnical investigations conducted at
the project site and the subsequent laboratory testing performed on the selected soil
samples. It includes an assessment of the subsurface soil stratigraphy, foundation
The locations of all the investigation points ( 2 auger holes and 3 rotary holes) are
indicated on the Geotechnical Investigation Plan, as illustrated in Fig. 2-1 in Appendix-
A.
2.1 General
A total of five (05) exploratory boreholes were conducted at the site, with two (02)
drilled to a depth of 15.5 meters (50 feet) and one (01) drilled to a depth of 30.5 meters
(100 feet) below EGL using straight rotary technique and two (02) down to 10m depth
using hand auger. All boreholes were stabilized by circulating bentonite mud in the
holes The diameter of all the boreholes is approximately 100-150mm. Split spoon
sampler was used without liner and SPTs were performed in these boreholes at 1.0m
depth interval down to maximum drilled depth i.e 30.5m. Undisturbed soil samples
were collected from cohesive strata using Denison tubes.
Borehole logs were maintained to document all materials encountered during drilling
and data from the Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) conducted in each borehole was
recorded on these logs. These borehole logs and photographs taken in the field, can
be found in Appendix-B and Appendix-D, respectively.
The locations of the boreholes drilled during these investigations are depicted on the
Geotechnical Investigations Plan, which is provided in Fig. 2-1 of Appendix-A.
During these field investigations, in-situ Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was
performed in each borehole. A brief discussion of the in-situ test in boreholes is
provided below.
2.4 Sampling
Disturbed soil samples were obtained from the boreholes through split spoon sampler
while performing SPTs. The disturbed samples were placed in polythene bags and
preserved in wide-mouthed plastic jars. The jars were clearly labelled to indicate the
project name, project code, borehole designation and depth of sampling.
Undisturbed soil samples were obtained from the boreholes at designated depths by
using Shelby/Denison samplers. The undisturbed soil samples were properly waxed
and labelled to indicate the project name, project code, borehole designation and depth
of sampling.
All soil samples were transported with great care to the laboratory testing facility of M/s
Berkeley Associates (Pvt) Ltd., located in Lahore, for subsequent laboratory testing.
3.1 General
The following sections provide a brief description of these tests, while a summary of
the laboratory test results is presented in Table 3-1, which can be found in Appendix-
A.
For classifying the subsurface soils, fifty-seven (57) selected soil samples were
subjected to grain size analyses during these studies. The sieve analyses were
performed in accordance with the procedures specified in ASTM D-422. The
percentage of fines (passing sieve no. 200) and sand/gravel fractions of the tested soil
samples are also indicated in Table 3-1 (Appendix-A). Results of grain size analyses
were plotted in the form of gradation curves and are presented in Appendix-C.
Atterberg limits were performed on twenty-one (21) selected soil samples. The tests
were performed as specified in ASTM D-4318. All these tests were performed with at
least three trials. The test results are summarized in Table 3-1 and Casagrande’s
Plasticity Chart has been attached as Fig. 3-1 in Appendix-A, respectively.
Eight (08) soil samples were tested for the estimation of specific gravity. The tests were
carried out in accordance with ASTM D-854. The test results are provided in Table 3-1
(Appendix-A). Its value ranges from 2.65 to 2.72.
Seven (07) soil samples were tested for the determination of bulk density. The test
results are summarized in Table 3-1 (Appendix-A). Its value ranges from 15.8 kN/m3
to 19.9 kN/m3.
In order to estimate shear strength characteristics of foundation soils, four (04) soil
samples were subjected to direct shear tests. The tests were carried out in accordance
with the procedure explained in ASTM D-3080. The test results are provided in Table
3-1 (Appendix-A). Its value ranges from 32.5 to 36.2 degrees. The corresponding
laboratory test sheets are attached in Appendix-C.
In order to determine the chemical characteristics of the subsoil, one (01) selected soil
sample was tested for estimation of chemical composition. The results are summarized
in Table 3-1 (Appendix-A).
Sulfate
The sulfate content of the tested soil sample is 0.08%.
Chloride
The chloride content of the tested soil sample is 0.1%.
4.1 General
The geotechnical investigations for the project involved a combination of field and
laboratory work The field and laboratory investigations were aimed at evaluating the
engineering characteristics of the foundation soils. The subsurface conditions and
engineering and chemical characteristics of the soils existing at the proposed project
site are discussed in the following sections.
4.2 Topography
The topography of the project site is predominately flat. The alluvial deposits were
encountered in the project area which mainly consist of flood plain deposits. As
provided by the Client, ground elevation of all boreholes is El.0.00m.
4.3 Stratigraphy
• Loose man-made FILL MATERIAL overlying the 1st natural soil layer,
comprises Clayey Silt/Silty Clay intermixed with gravel. It varies in thickness
from 0.3m to 0.8m.
• The 1st natural soil layer comprises LEAN CLAY / SILTY CLAY that extends
to maximum depth of 1.5m below EGL.
• The 2nd natural soil layer comprises SILTY SAND / POORLY GRADED SAND
with SILT which extends to maximum depth of 11.0m below EGL.
• The 2nd layer is followed by LEAN CLAY/SILTY CLAY which extends to
maximum depth of 19.0m below EGL.
• The 3rd layer is followed by SILTY SAND / POORLY GRADED SAND with
SILT which extends to maximum explored depth of 30.5m below EGL
• Some small pockets of SANDY SILT have also been observed at different
depths.
The above information has been detailed on the respective borehole logs and linear
On the basis of concentrations of sulfates determined in the foundation soil and water
samples collected from boreholes, the severity is classified as "Not Applicable" with
“Class S0” as explained in ACI 318M-08 Table 4.2.1. Based on the concentrations of
sulfates, it is recommended to use Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) for substructure.
In accordance with the Building Code of Pakistan (Ref. 7.2), the criteria for
classification of uncemented soil profiles are to be based on;
• 𝑣̅𝑠 = average shear wave velocity of the top 100 ft (30 m).
or
• ̅ 𝑜𝑟 ̅̅̅̅̅
𝑁 𝑁𝑐ℎ = average field SPT resistance for the top 100 ft (30 m).
or
• 𝑠̅𝑢 = average undrained shear strength for the top 100 ft (30 m).
4.6 Seismicity
According to the Building Code of Pakistan (BCP-2021) Table C-1 issued by Pakistan
Engineering Council (Ref. 7.2), the spectral acceleration with ground motion level at
2% probability of exceedance in 50 years (2475 Years Return Period) for Lahore City
is as follows:
Short-Period Spectral Response acceleration (0.2-second), Ss = 0.49
Long-Period Spectral Response acceleration (1-second), S1= 0.14
Design parameters have been selected on the basis of field & laboratory test results,
literature and engineering judgement. Evaluations have been made for allowable
bearing pressures for the shallow foundations which are discussed in the following
sections.
Field and laboratory test data have been used to determine the foundation design
parameters. Following soil parameters are recommended for design of shallow
foundations below existing ground level;

The type and depth of footings, design criteria and net allowable bearing pressures are
discussed in the following sections.
For evaluation of allowable bearing pressures, the following two criteria are adopted;
i- The allowable load should not initiate shear failure of the foundation
soils, and
The allowable bearing pressures as provided in this report are for normal axial loads
on level ground. For eccentric loading conditions, the axial load, Pa will be:
Pa = qa . Aeff
