1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 General

M/s Lahore Smart City (LSC), hereinafter called the Client, plans to construct a Special
Children Academy at Lahore Smart City (LSC) Kala Shah Kaku (KSK). The Special
Children Academy will be a 4-storey structure, consisting of a basement, ground floor
and four additional floors. M/s Berkeley Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. (BAL) were engaged to
carry out the geotechnical investigations at the proposed site of both buildings.

The purpose of the Geotechnical Investigation was to delineate the subsurface

conditions and soil engineering characteristics in order to yield a set of rational
foundation design parameters by advancing a total of three (03) sampled boreholes
(Boreholes BH-01 to BH-03) on the site. The geotechnical investigations comprised
drilling of boreholes, performance of in-situ testing in boreholes, collection of soil/water
samples, laboratory testing and preparation and submission of geotechnical
investigations report. The information gathered from the Geotechnical Investigations
was used to provide geotechnical design recommendations for the proposed
development.

The entire fieldwork was carried out under the fulltime supervision of our site supervisor
of M/s Berkeley Associates (Pvt.) Ltd.

The fieldwork for these geotechnical investigations was carried out from May 06, 2023
to May 08, 2023.

1.2 Scope of Work

Scope of work as provided by Client is summarized below;

- Drilling of three (03) exploratory boreholes, each down to 15.5m depth below

fieldwork and laboratory testing.

1.3 Methodology

Field investigations were carried out in accordance with the defined scope of work. The
exploratory boring was drilled using hand auger cum light percussion drilling technique.
Field test i.e. Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) was performed in all boreholes in
accordance with ASTM D-1586.

Relatively undisturbed soil samples were collected at different depths from each
borehole using 50 mm diameter sampler. Disturbed soil samples were obtained from
the boreholes through split spoon sampler while performing SPT.

Selected soil samples were subjected to various laboratory tests for the evaluation of
classification and strength characteristics.

This report has been prepared on the basis of geotechnical investigations carried out
at the project site and subsequent laboratory testing performed on the selected soil
samples. An evaluation of subsurface soil stratigraphy, foundation design parameters
and recommendations regarding allowable bearing capacity of shallow foundations are
also provided in this report.

2 FIELD INVESTIGATIONS

2.1 General

The field investigations included the following activities;

- Drilling of three (03) exploratory boreholes

- In-situ testing i.e Standard Penetration Test (SPT)
- Collection of soil samples from boreholes

The details of the fieldwork are discussed in this chapter.

2.2 Drilling of Exploratory Boreholes

A total of three (03) exploratory boreholes, each down to 15.5m depth below existing
ground level (EGL) using hand auger cum light percussion drilling technique were
drilled at the proposed project site. The diameter of all the boreholes is approximately
100 mm. Split spoon sampler was used and SPTs were performed in these boreholes
at 1.0m depth intervals.

A record of all the materials encountered in the boreholes was maintained in the form
of borehole logs. Data of SPTs conducted in each hole was also recorded on the
borehole logs. The borehole logs and field photographs are included in Appendix-B
and Appendix-D, respectively.

Location of the boreholes drilled during these investigations is shown on Geotechnical

Investigations Plan, attached as Fig. 2-1 (Appendix-A).

2.3 In situ Testing

During these field investigations, in-situ Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was
performed in all boreholes at the site. A brief discussion of the in-situ test in boreholes
is provided below.

For evaluating the consistency and compactness of the foundation soils, Standard
Penetration Tests (SPT) were performed in all the exploratory boreholes at a general
depth interval of 1.0m down to maximum explored depth of 15.5m below existing

ground level. SPTs were conducted in accordance with the procedures described in
latest version of ASTM designation D-1586. A donut type hammer, weighing 63.5 kg,
was used for the tests. The hammer was lifted and dropped manually through a manila
rope using a pulley hanged with the tripod stand. A split spoon sampler was used for
all the tests. Disturbed soil samples were obtained through the split spoon sampler.
Profiles of observed SPT N-values versus depth and corrected SPT (N1)70 values
versus depth are shown on Fig. 2-2 to Fig. 2-3 respectively. These figures are
appended in Appendix-A.

2.4 Sampling

Disturbed soil samples were obtained from the boreholes through split spoon sampler
during the performance of SPTs. The disturbed samples were placed in polythene
bags which were clearly labelled to indicate the project name, project code, borehole
designation and depth of sample.

Relatively undisturbed soil samples were collected at different depths from each
borehole using 50 mm diameter tube.

All soil samples were carefully transported to laboratory testing facility of M/s Berkeley
Associates (Pvt) Ltd., Lahore for subsequent laboratory testing.

2.5 Groundwater Observations

4 GEOTECHNICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SUBSOIL

4.1 General

The geotechnical investigations conducted for the project comprised field and
laboratory work. The field and laboratory investigations were aimed at evaluating the
engineering characteristics of the foundation soils. The subsurface conditions and
engineering characteristics of the soils existing at the proposed project site are
discussed in the following sections.

4.2 Topography and Geology

The topography of the project site is predominately flat. The alluvial deposits were
encountered in the project area which mainly consist of flood plain deposits. As the
project site is flat, ground elevation of all boreholes is assumed as 100.0m.

4.3 Stratigraphy

During these investigations, the subsurface was explored to a maximum depth of

15.5m below the existing ground level (EGL) and the following lithological units have
been identified;

• The 1st natural soil layer comprises LEAN CLAY that extends to maximum
depth of 4.0m below EGL.

• The 2nd natural layer comprises SILTY SAND / POORLY GRADED SAND
with SILT which extends down to maximum explored depth of 15.5m below
EGL.

The above information has been detailed on the respective borehole logs (Appendix-
B).

4.4 Site Classification

In accordance with the Building Code of Pakistan (Ref. 7.2), the criteria for
classification of uncemented soil profiles are to be based on;

5 FOUNDATION DESIGN
5.1 General
Various field and laboratory tests have been carried out during these geotechnical
investigations. These test results have been examined for evaluation of subsurface
conditions at the project site and determination of geotechnical design parameters.

Design parameters have been selected on the basis of field & laboratory test results,
literature and engineering judgement. Evaluations have been made for allowable
bearing pressures for the shallow foundations which are discussed in the following
sections.

5.2 Type of Foundation

Keeping in view the requirement of structural foundations and subsurface soil

conditions present at the site, the Strip and Square footings as well as Raft foundations
have been recommended as shallow foundations for the proposed project. The design
criteria, geotechnical design parameters and allowable bearing pressures for shallow
foundations are discussed in the following sections.

5.3 Design Parameters

Field and laboratory test data have been used to determine the foundation design
parameters. Following soil parameters are recommended for design of shallow
foundations below existing ground level;

5.4 Shallow Foundations

The type and depth of footings, design criteria and net allowable bearing pressures are
discussed in the following sections.

5.4.1 Depth of Foundations

Keeping in view the encountered subsurface conditions and the information about the
type of building isolated square/strip footings at 4.0m depth below EGL have been
evaluated for various foundation sizes. The evaluations have also been made for
raft/mat foundation at 4.0 depth below EGL.

5.4.2 Design Criteria

Allowable bearing pressures for shallow foundations have been evaluated for different
sizes of foundations. For evaluation of allowable bearing pressures, the following two
criteria are adopted;

i- The allowable load should not initiate the shear failure of the foundation
soils, and

ii- The total as well as differential settlements caused by the application of

superimposed loads should be within specified tolerable limits of
25.4mm for square/strip foundations and 50.8mm for raft/mat
foundations.

5.4.3 Allowable Bearing Pressures

The allowable bearing pressures on the basis of shear and settlement failure of soil
were determined by Brinch-Hansen (Ref. 7.1) and Meyerhof (1956) approach,
respectively.
The evaluated net allowable bearing pressures for different sizes of square/strip
footings placed at 4.0m depth below existing ground level (EGL) are shown on Fig. 5-
1 (Appendix-A).

The evaluated net/gross allowable bearing pressures for different sizes of raft
foundations placed at 4.0m depth below existing ground level (EGL) are shown on Fig.
5-2 (Appendix-A).

5.4.4 Modulus of Subgrade Reaction

Modulus of subgrade reaction Ks to be used in computer model for structural analysis

can be evaluated from the basic definition of Ks by using the evaluated net allowable
bearing pressure which causes the settlement under the maximum structural pressure
and is as follows:

For Square/Strip Footing with 25.4 mm tolerable settlement

Ks (kN/m3) = Evaluated Net Allowable Bearing Pressure x FS______

Settlement (25.4 mm) under maximum structural pressure

For Raft foundation with 50 mm tolerable settlement

Ks (kN/m3) = Evaluated Net Allowable Bearing Pressure x FS______

Settlement (50.8 mm) under maximum structural pressure

5.5 Construction Considerations

The soils at foundation level should be carefully inspected prior to placing the
foundations to ensure that the soils are similar to those encountered in the boreholes.
In case any loose / weak material is encountered in the foundation trenches / pits, it
must be completely removed and foundations should be placed at deeper depth on
intact soil. For any different soil conditions, geotechnical engineer must be consulted
prior to initiate foundation construction.
